  • fireworks......again!

The last few evenings we have been treated to the sounds of multiple fireworks!

Actually, this isn't a rant, more of an observation. Although there have been quite a few explosions, it seems that (please let it stay this way) the huge airburst fireworks are no longer available. I know they were banned from sale as of Jan 1 this year and it seems to be working.....so far. There's nothing, however, to stop the dedicated pyrotechnician from buying off the internet.

I just hope it stays this way. I was well and truly fed up the last few years. Sitting quietly in the house and then next thing it sounded like a bomb going off outside. Didn't do my heart any good :P It might save a few windows as well; one of those airburst things shattered one of my windows a couple of years ago.

They're still annoying but not quite so terrifying.

Hi Misty - aren't they darn annoying??!

Especially when you're not expecting it, and WHAM! Off they go. Our dog/cat don't like them either, especially when they are in the daylight hours! (Why do people let them off in the daylight?!!!!!)

One or two here today......warming up season for fireworks eh.

Glad you're ok after the window shattered, that must have been scary!

Also, one or two here tonight! First I've heard for a bit, but, yes, no bombs yet!! Hope you're right, Misty, 'cos I loathe those multiple bomb-type ones!

        Hi Misty

That's uncanny, I was just thinking exactly the same thing. We've just been subjected to our first bout of fireworks tonight (but as you say only small ones). Last year it was terrible, we used to get the really loud ones every night, often in the early hours, waking the whole house up.

Like you, I really do hope that it improves this year.

        Fingers crossed....... :talktohand:

We've had fireworks going off here too.

The cat really doesn't like them one bit.

The kids on a nearby street have already started building the bonfire in the park near us - I thought it would have been lit by someone tonight, but they've obviously been foiled by the heavy rain. (ha ha)

              With you there, April!

It now seems to be a year-round thing, and very disturbing it is, and scary for pets! Can no longer bargain for keeping pets in/not scared for a week in November/a day for New Year!

Will be happier this year tho' if those multiple-atombomb things are banned

I have a vain hope. The yobs have been used to the HUGE bangers for the last few years. Wouldn't it be great if they decided that these more feeble ones aren't worth buying?

I can live in hope ('Yes', I can almost hear my mum say, 'And die in despair' :P )

Now we need to campaign to get them banned completely. There was a huge scare in Liverpool this week when a landlord went to collect his rent and thought he saw a bomb in his tenant's home. A huge area was sealed off and the bomb squad called it. It turned out to be a bundle of fireworks (rockets). But better safe than sorry, fireworks have been used as deadly weapons a few times lately.

We can always hope (although life never seems to be that kind)

I love fireworks - really look forward to Nov 5th and could never understand how anyone could be so 'miserable' to not enjoy them - until lately that is... :errrm:

Luckily we don't have a massive prob round our way, although last year we did get a few let off well after Nov 5th, nothing like you all have been putting up with.

But my feeling now is that I just bet that this year, more and more will be let off - just because they got away with it last time.

And that's the trouble really, I just feel really nervous now about letting individuals have access to things that can maim you so easily, so I am all for banning them now and just leaving it to the specialists to lay on displays - much nicer fireworks anyway. They are also so expensive - literally burn your money!

We have had major fireworks going off for the last couple of nights. I don't know why, but I just put it down to a celebration somewhere.

                        Oh well...there's worse to come

Mazza, I enjoy a good ol' firework display as well. When I said getting them banned I meant for sale to the public. I don't want to be a killjoy but I think of all the old folk with bad hearts and all the pets who are terrified and all the vandalism that kids cause when setting off fireworks.

There have been a good few telephone boxes blown up by them. I read a few stories where fireworks have been thrown into crowded pubs. It's just not on.

Yep, totally agree - professional displays only - it's definitley gone too far.

When you think about it, sweet shops sell the blimmin things - it's all too easy to give the buyer's age the benefit of the doubt if you are a small trader and your trade has been a bit slow that day, than at 5 pm a guy - youngish - comes in to buy a heap of bangers for a good few quid - tempting...

I do feel like a killjoy saying it as just a couple of years ago I could never imagine I'd be so anti, but now I am.

If fireworks were banned, it may effect those of us who build and fly model rockets (the engines are small solid fuel ones like those in fireworks) ... I'd have to build myself a liquid fuel rocket engine - not cheap *sigh*
