Neighbours From Hell in Britain - Newsletter: December 2003 (HTML Version)

Well Christmas is nearly here! Where on earth has this year gone?

NFHiB is growing daily; the forum board now boasts 919 members and over 34 thousand posts!

A big welcome to everyone who has joined the forum board in the last month.

As we have got bigger we have had some more volunteers to be Topic Leaders:

A big thank you to Sweetpea and Hazelnut who have taken areas on. Also a big thank you to Blue Cow who has extended her areas. It really does help.

Advent

As Christmas is drawing nearer some of the members have started an advent calendar you will find it here:

Advent Calendar Topic

So please pop back each day to see the newly added picture!

Any member can add a picture, so first one there each day gets to do it! As long as it’s a bit Christmassy we don’t mind! But please keep it clean. ;-)

Guest Access

We are having a trial period this month in having guest access switched off, this has seemed to work quite well so far. We are asking members how they feel about this, some members have said they are quite happy with it as they always worry their NFH might be watching them.

How do you feel about it?

Please let us know in this topic at the forum.

All views will be read and taken into consideration.

Media Requests

Over the last few weeks we have had quite a few media people contact us for volunteers, if you feel you would like to help any of our media friends please check out the media folder here.

This is only if you want to and feel safe in doing so. The main thing here is to stay safe at all times.

We have also had a few students asking for help with NFH related projects.

Polls

Well last months poll on fireworks was one of the most voted in we have run so far!

"140 people voted. 'Yes, totally' is the winner with 68 votes, but it's a close run with Option 4 of 'Organised official displays only' with 56 votes."

See the full results from the main site pages.

This month's poll is all about NFH and Christmas, does your NFH get worse at this time of year? You can vote from the main NFHiB Homepage.

Spying NFH

The main newsletter feature this month is on 'spying'.

Do you ever feel you are being watched? Do you ever have that uncomfortable feeling that your NFH know too much about you?

Many, many members have said this recently. So what can we do about it?

I know this seems really simple but close curtains at night; I travel to and from work in the dark quite often and it never ceases to amaze me, how many houses I go past where the lights are on and the curtains open! You can see all sorts of things, people in their nightwear, what is in their houses and sometimes even what they are watching on TV!

Also have you thought about net curtains?

There are many different kinds of window coverings these days, nets, voile, muslin, blinds and shutters to name but a few.

This will also help protect against would be burglars. I go past many homes where you can see from one window to the back window (through lounges) - you can see if people are in or out, a sure invitation to "burgle me"!

Do you keep things on your window sills that can be seen from outside? Do you have fancy ornaments or crystal? I know we shouldn’t have to live our lives around NFH, but if you have birthday cards for example on your window sills, they will have a little bit of knowledge about events in your life. The less NFH know about our lives the better.

What about outside? 6 foot fences are great, but we all know that it is not always possible to have these, let's not even get started on boundary issues!

Hedges, (prickly ones are best!) can be grown up, it may take a while though. Trellis on existing fences is also a good idea, especially if you want to keep the privacy in your garden. Anything that will stop NFH getting near your windows is perfect. It scares me the amount of times I hear that NFH are actually looking through windows while standing in "your" garden. Very creepy!

So prickly hedges or shrubs under your windows are also a good idea. You can always hope that if your NFH does spy on you they might fall into the prickly bush!

One suggestion for a spying NFH is to put a full length mirror in your window so if they do try and get a peek all they will see is themselves!

If you are decorating or getting ready for a move, pop down to your local charity shop and pick up some cheap nets. By white washing your windows or taping newspapers to your windows it is a sign something is happening in your home, and we all know how NFH thrive on a little tit bit of information like that.

What ever you choose to do I hope it works and helps keep NFH off your back.
