well just one tip really

Don't do it! get a professional in, it's hard and it hurts and it makes a flippin' mess.

 :hihi: I'll say!

I did two rooms, the bedroom last year and the living room the year before. Had my own plastering whotsit (rectangular thing with a handle) and all. Lawks did I make a mess... I even got it on my eyelashes. Neither room had been renovated, from a plastering point of view, since the olde days. Lovely old plaster, a white-ish grey-ish colour. I made up my own concoction, trying to be sympathetic to the building's age and all that.

We had the bathroom plastered by a professional, and I have to say (being all modest as usual  ) that I did a better job than he did. But I did take twenty times longer.

Plaster that's too dry will drop off the wall (onto your head... been there, done that). Plaster that's too wet will splash about and land in your eye. I found it best to wet the wall before I plastered it... otherwise the plaster dropped off (onto my head again).

Leave the wall to dry out properly... painting onto plaster before it's ready to accept the paint can cause the paint to flake and the plaster to crack. Plasterers recommend six months, but I waited three and it was fine - it was during the hot weather though, so everything was drying out faster.

Oh, and wear something that buttons up to the neck... wet plaster down your chest is not very pleasant.

And one last thing... don't hang pictures on the wall until the plaster's dried out properly. I knew someone who hung an antique mirror on a wall that hadn't dried out... poor mirror.

Get a recommended professional if you're going for a smooth finish! To attempt even patch plastering isn't easy, and I learnt that from a professional of 40 years standing - it's a nightmare

Have messy fun if you're going to have a go

i'm actually quite good at it (used to be a plasterers mate for 18 months) it's just a job i hate. gimme a paint brush or some paper to hang and i'm happy (2 yr apprentiship ;) ).

Wickes do good self help leaflets too.

Saying that though Mr T is meant to be doing the bathroom and we have the leaflet, plaster and all the gear - it has been in the cupboard for 6 months!!

LOL, too true! We've just had a bedroom totally re-plastered recently, took a few days and cost around £400, well worth the expense and hassle. The plaster work is top notch and is so smooth it has a 'glass' finish. B)

So much easier and nicer to finish with paint now too, although it took hours to get the wood chip paper off the ceiling in advance of the plasterer :o (a throw back from the previous occupants!).
