I am a self confessed technophobe, but have had to learn bits and pieces about computers through necessity. :wow:
My problem is; I have connected two computers together into a home network. This is brilliant, with 5 people wanting to go on the internet, at least 2 can now go on at once. :sorcerer:, but I cannot link the second computer to the printer, which is connected to the first computer. :badpc:
I have followed the setting up network printer on both computer and still nothing.
The first computer runs on windows XP, the second on windows 98se.
Anybody any advice, pleeeeeeeeease,:help: :help: :help:
i asked hubs via msn as he's at work and is a geeky/techy type person.. he gives the following advice..
is easy all they need to do is have the printer shared ie. right click it and share it then on other machine look for network printer
depends which machine he puts the printer on as one Os will see the other easier
best put printer on the xp machine..
.. make any sense to you? lol

Bazranz,
You should try wireless networking next, you'll love that.
GG.
we have the same problem here  one of those things we keep meaning to sort out but never get round to it! :D
so at the mo, we transfer the word doc or what ever over to the other PC and then print it off, I will ask my friend how its done and get him to let you know or I will get back to you :)
Bonkers Mad!!!

you'll also need to set XP to allow file sharing if you havent already done that. there should also be somewhere in your lan properties where you can set up the printer connection

Thanks for the advice everybody, I will start trying to sort it out when I have gone off the internet, :notworthy:

Have a look in the properties of your network connection and ensure that you have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" selected.
Also if the same machine is connected to the internet, you are running a firewall aren't you?

Thanks for the advice Enterian, and fortunately, I am running a firewall.
hi bazranz
i have problems networking too, its just not fun is it.
It could depend on how your network is set up, e.g. are you connecting through a router, and on that router do the puters connect to the interweb seperately or does the second one connect to the internet "through" the first puter.
Are you are able to share files between the two comps easily enough?
Networking is not something i know alot about but i have spent hours trying to work things out at home and at work

Hi vernon,
The two computers are directly connected, with a link between them for everything. I am able to access the internet from both computers, but anything else gets lost in the netherworld. :(
My amount of hair is going down rapidly.

Hi bazranz,
Try turning off both firewalls on both machines, while you attempt to print. Does this then work ok? :D
Hi bazranz,
just to find out how your set up, you presumably have a broadband modem, is this connected then to a router/switch?
Is each computer connected to the switch by an RJ45 cable?
I'm just asking becuse you might be connected to the modem by USB on one computer and use windows internet connection sharing.
(just something we found out at work, apparently your not supposed to be able to "properly" network XPhome computers because they don't log onto domains fully, although we have loads at work networked, they log in a kind of "refinding every time" way, not as efficient or something, and the one XPpro machine which did log on properly and was super fast, (my one!) just stopped logging on properly one day and do you think i could get it back to how it was? well no i couldn't, that one just logs on like a XP home one too, i'm justing rambling but from what i can tell networking is not an exact science :P
on the Xp computer if you go to "my computer/my network places/view workgroup computers" does the 98 one show up?
I think i would do a search on google for "setting up home network" and look around some of the pages :) Good luck!
I found networking a very fun thing... You do what they say- it dont work- you do it again- nope again - nope again WOOT works perfect and no reason for why !!
Im no tech wizz (i think im a chimp at the computer side of life)
Have you made a disk from the win XP - so the win 98 will work - Xp(pro)
It should prompt you to make a disk to install the needed files to the 98se machine.
We had that with machine 3
Im never sure whats best for multiaccessing the net...
My bro just uses just his normal asdl modem for both machines (he does it for a living so isnt at my monkey level) but myself i needed a router. and only allow two of the network machines access the net.
