View Full Version : Which magazines do you buy?
Mr R always does the shopping, and he always 'phones from the supermarket when the new mags come out each month, and goes through what they've got so I can tell him which ones to bring back. I was looking at the huge amount of magazines I've got and thinking what a waste of money they are... but I still keep on buying them.
Which ones do you guys buy? And what do you do with them when you've read them?
I get "House & Garden", "Homes & Gardens", "Period Living & Traditional Homes", "Period House", "Arts of Asia" (I have to subscribe to that one and it comes from Hong Kong), "Maison Francaise" (I have that sent from France), and I used to read Mr R's "Men's Health" when he bought that but he hasn't recently. Some months I'll also get "English Home", "25 Beautiful Homes", and "Homes & Antiques".
I used to get "Orientations" which, apparently, President Chirac reads... but I found it to be rather boring.
I like Cosmo too.
But you know, I never read a magazine in a waiting room.

I don't buy magazines anymore as there's so much information about what I used to read about on the internet now.
I used to buy Men's Health (where I used to read about being fit while lounging around the flat gaining weight and eating tons of chocolate), PDA Essentials (I can download everything I need off the internet and see all the reviews I want on line), Official Playstation 2 Magazine (again I can get all the reviews on line) and Runner's World ( yerrs, ditto about Men's Health magazine - got a nice pair of trainers after reading a review though!   ).
I buy Take A Break every Thursday :)
I read the stories then give it to Eeyores mam who does all the competitions, and, in all, we've done this every week for 10 years and never won a thing
Mr Eeyore gets Real Robots, has done since day one, I think it's in it's 80th edition now or something, he has a lovely robot he's made and a baby one to follow it round, that he is still building

I get "Period Living & Traditional Homes", "Period House", "Country Living", "Country Homes and Interiors", Low Carb Energy" and every week I succum to the temptations of Heat magazine!!
 Gosh, there's a lot of reading in your list ribbit!! :wow:
I only get the freebie supermarket magazines these days  .
Oh and perhaps 'Thomas the Tank Engine' for the little guy!
I used to get all sorts of baby ones years ago - which I still have in a pile somewhere  . I just grew out of them I guess - but I must say I did do lots of competitions in them which was a big factor in continuing to buy them...and I did quite well out of it (but I guess that's a different thread!) .
I think they will end up in the paper bank...one day ;) .
Hi Ribbit,
I just get Good Food which I subscribe too.
I am sorry to say this, but far too busy to read anything else, with 4 children you would be!
I used to buy the baby mags when they were little, but find I don't have the money nowadays.
In any event, I am delighted when GF pops through the door!
sunny :)
PS. Did used to get Home & Garden and most of the gardening mags.

:D I buy Heat and Reveal every week without fail!! Some weeks I buy Chat, Bella, Take a Break etc etc!! :D My dad is always having a moan about how much I spend on magazines! (he stills sits there for ages reading them when he calls round! )
And last year I persuaded mr sparrow that by subscribing to New Woman magazine - via the internet - we would not only save a pound an issue I would get a bottle of perfume as a free gift! :D (nice perfume too!)And have it delivered to our door!
Mr sparrow used to buy Max Power (boy racers mag) every month but stopped last year as I told him he was a petrol head so he proving a point by not buying THE petrol heads top magazine! Instead he turning his attentions to caravans  and keeps buying magazines about them
Our daughters are easilly pleased - they choose the magazine with the best free gift on the cover!

ps - i do put them out in the blue bag for the bin men to collect every week for recycling

Many of you will puzzle over this.
I used to buy a lot of magazines for the purpose of cutting up text for experimental writing and random triggering of thought it would create, but with the internet now it is easier to create computer generated writing.
The only magazine I buy now is Juxtapoz. The magazine focuses on what is called "lowbrow" art. It always has very strange paintings!
Chris
nice to see members recycling! :D
I only really read the free metro paper now, I pick it up on the bus or train! :D
sometimes I read the mags people leave at work but not often, I can not abide those really expensive ones like hello, which just have photos of demi celebs, and no other real content! :book:

 Ah, I have to confess, even though its a lot of old nonsense, I buy 'OK' every so often....and I always say never again...its real junk!
Otherwise I never buy anything as you can get it all on the internet... I read all the online newspapers and various dead boring financial things (like Bloomberg Money and the Online FT) because of work...
The only newspaper I buy, and Ken Livingstone would be most upset, is the London Evening Standard...I have always liked it, but I never read any of the editorials..that way I dont get annoyed!!! B)
Some of these magazines cost a fortune dont they? :(

I'll say  ... sometimes I add it all up and think of all the good things I could do with the money. The housey magazines are a bad habit, but I wouldn't give up my "Maison Francaise" because I get the addresses for interesting shops for when we go to France... and it's just too chic to do without   . I pretend I'm some well-orf Parisian with an apartment on the Right Bank... mais oui, c'est tres chic!
And my "Arts of Asia" mag is so educational (it is... honest!), and it's full of glossy pictures of priceless antiques that I'll never be able to afford... so I'm back to being that well-orf Parisian again.
The rest of them... well, it's just that I like looking inside other people's houses. I can't help it... leave your curtains open at your own peril when I'm around. It's not the successful interiors that I'm interested in, it's the really bad ones (usually something to do with Lawrence LLewelly-Bowlegs  ).
Oh, and I do get Apollo sometimes too... depending on what's in it.
I do read an awful lot... I'll read anything that's lying about... even the labels on food packets have me gripped... and signs by the side of the road...

I realise how few magazines I actually buy now, due to the marvels of the internet. Saves a fortune!
However, every now and then I buy a girly mag (Cosmo or New Woman) to look at the clothes etc. I have always regarded them as a bit of a treat, and lovely for a long journey or just to be tucked up in bed with.
In the past I have bought a few of those endless sets which you are meant to collect in nice files - have never collected a whole set!
I get a really boring weekly mag for my studies, which very rarely comes out of the wrapper (if I tell you its to do with accountancy you will realise why!)
The only other thing I get regularly, and lord knows why, is the Readers Digest mag!!! Got sucked in a couple of years ago, and we always had it at home when I was a kid, so I just let it keep coming. Actually has some quite good articles now and then...
No shopping Ribbit! My goodness that is self-restraint verging on saintly!!! Although I must say an awful lot of my shopping happens in cyber-space these days.

So is mine ;) ... while Mr R is out buying the boring stuff, I am on the net working my way towards bankruptcy  ... and oh my, does ebay have a lot to answer for!
Ribbit http://www.boiledsprouts.com/ratgrin.gif
LOL Ribbit, maybe you could sell some magazines on Ebay to recoup some spending money (then you can spend it all over again)
I did that, ahd loads of old magazines on antiques, collectables etc etc, and sold them for a decent amount of money which I then spent on Eeyores

I buy Writer's Forum and computer magazines that have software I want.
I used to buy news magazines, but since I have got back into full time journalism and write for three different magazines for the company I work for, I am right off buying lots of magazines! Like working for a chocolate maker, and not eating much chocolate anymore!

I buy Italian magazine and dream of buying a castle somewhere in the Tuscan Hills. I also buy the chick mags like Now and Closer. Mr T buys Autosport every week without fail and has done for the past 10 years. He keeps every copy too and we now have 5 huge boxes worth in the loft!! Little Tortoise likes Hot Wheels or any other mag aimed at 10yr old boys with too much pocket money!! :D
