View Full Version : Constipation...
It's not something I would normally bring up... but I am having great problems in this area. It's either a side effect of the drugs, or just the stress of having NFH... either way I am in pain and the pills I tried haven't helped. In fact, they made me feel quite ill. Also, you can't keep on taking the pills because they can damage your insides, and obviously neither my NFH nor my pills are going away... so I need some form of natural remedy, or something I can eat that will make a difference.
I've been drinking enough to float an armada... and eating enough raisins and plums to sink one. I've tried bananas, fruit & fibre cereal... prunes (yuk yuk yuk! :sicky: )
Any suggestions?

oh dear :o
well we found out to our displeaseure after our pooch had been put on steriods for itchy skin, that the steriods made her very very thirsty. she drank oodles of water, bowl fulls and it got to the stage where she was unable to even pass wind without.....well  I dopnt want to emabarrass her but it was a bit grim!
the water it seems loosens it all and softens it, so no coffee or other drinks, just plain water.
and keep clear of eggs and bananas as they bind
good luck :clover:

Ooops,
I suggested tons of bananas as I thoughtthey were good for that sort of thing. Oh dear.
Eeyores mam suffered big time recently because of all the drugs she had to take, she was in agony so i had to pop to the chemists for her ;)
They were very helpful and said Senakot, so I bought some for her, and it worked very very well indeed, Eeyores mam now takes it every day, and has regulated herself, and is also no longer constipated, a great relief
(The doctor also said he'd have recommended Senakot too)

You could ask your chemist for advice. I was constipated after having both babies, and you don't want to strain when you've been stitched in that general area! I was given pesseries that handled the problem in no time - I think they were glycerin. You can also drink glycerin - tastes vile but gets things moving.
Hope this helps
My grandfather swears by liquorice. Fresh orange juice is supposed to work too.

Hi Ribbit,
You do need to drink lots of water, and nothing else. Try eating very small amounts ONLY when hungry. Drink the rehydrating salts they are full of salts and sugar it stops your system from shutting down.
We lived for that stuff when we had food poisoning, and it does help. Also look at the website nhsdirect.co.uk.
GG.
Hi,
Dont' have that problem at all!!!!!!!! But my mum always swore by Senakot, isn't it herbal??????
All the best ribbit,
sunny :)

Doesnt 'Syrup of Figs' help get things moving?
I also seem to recall from my student days working in Boots, we used to sell glycerin pessaries...and if my experience working there is anything to go by, constipation is a major problem...the amount of laxatives we used to sell....
somebody just told me that the 'Bush Tea' i mentioned in the 'herbal teas' thread is good for clearing you out...and now I think about it, it could be true!!
Bonkers Mad!!!

Apples are good ;)
or you could try a standard infusion of Fenugreek, Flax seed or Vervain, sweetened with honey (also has slight laxative properties). one teaspoon of herbs per cup of boiling water, strained and sweetened and taken daily.
wholegrains, raw fruit and veg and at least 8 glasses of water a day.
Four day cleasing program (give your gut a chance)
Day 1. Fruit, fruit juices or mineral water only.
Day 2. Fruit and mixed salads for each meal. Drink mineral water, pure fruit juices or herbal teas.
Day 3. Fruit and youghurt for breakfast, mixed raw salad for lunch and steamed vegatables with cheese for dinner.
Day 4. Fruit or muesli with yoghurt for breakfast. salad for lunch and brown rice and vegatables for dinner.
Day 5. return to normal diet.

Senakot (Senna) Tablets or Syrup are said to be very good indeed - worth a go for sure! :D Available without PX as far as I know.

Any progress darling Ribbit? I hate to think of you suffering. :(
Hi ribbit :)
Poor thing, it is really debilitating and distressing  .
I think you have plenty of suggestions there to be going on with :) .
I just wanted to say (please don't blush) but if you have tried to go and haven't managed it although you know it is there...then glycerin suppositories are really very helpful indeed.
Glycerin is very inert and has no drug as such in it, so is considered to be very safe and gentle. However, don't let that fool you cos it really does work to shift it if it is very low down (so to speak) .
You can get them from the chemist, no prescription needed.
If you are still not getting any relief, don't hesitiate to see your GP or perhaps practice nurse about it - they are well used to dealing with this problem :) .
All the best - things like this can take ages to get back to normal, so you have to be patient :( .
:flowers:
Thanks you guys :flowers2:
I'm going to do the fruit diet... plenty of water. I've been fancying a lot of fruit, especially apples, so that'll be yummy. Is pizza a fruit?
Mr R went and got some Senakot... and I reckon it must be a conspiracy to interfere with my "movements" because when I opened the box there was nothing inside! :o
I was going to say I'd give you a progress report once I've got a box with something in it... but maybe that's more information than you need?
It's amazing how low you can feel when you're constipated  ... and tired.

Hi ribbit :)
But I find that coffee/red wine makes the situation worse for me, so they may work for you.
Hope you're feeling better soon :flowers:
I just wanted to say that although some might think constipation is not that important, it is really really disabling when you can't get going - so I am not surprised you feel rotten ribbit. :( .
I hope you get a box with some pills in asap and they start to give you some relief...and I would like to know how you get on!

Senokot is very good.
You could also try hot pepper sauce. Works well but is very hot. (It gets you coming AND going! ;) )
Bran helps. Also try Scrumpy, as it can help.
Is your problem because Ron and gassy are both a pain in the ****? :hihi:

Yers... quite literally.
Mr R just went back to the shop to tell them about the empty box... and they weren't surprised. Apparently an anorexic has been stealing the contents of all the laxatives boxes. :o In fact, in some cases, she's taken the pills out of the little plastic strips and put the strips back into the boxes.
I have mine now though... so I'll give you all a blow by blow account (so to speak  ).

Words fail me! (For once)
The chemist should really put them behind the counter and have them request only, if they know they have a problem like that.
I hope they work as well for you as they did Eeyores mam

And the person who keeps stealing them from the chemists... they speak very highly of them! Well, they would if they had time to speak.
Bet they have to be very careful not to cough, though... :)

Have you tried 'fig biscuits' ? Always needed to go after eating those. (ok, so when I was a kid I'd wolf down a whole packet as they were just scrummy)

I forgot to mention tea and toast...that often does the trick :hihi:
Fig bickies.... yum yum yum.... ooooh, but fattening for my tum. Maybe just one... or ten.
Then I have to have tea and toast... and apples... covered in pepper sauce... with a scrumpy side dressing and a glass of wine.
I may be constipated... but I'll be too drunk and happy to care about it at this rate.

Woohoooooo! Euston we have lift off!
I don't know which thing did the trick. It was probably the Senokot, but just in case I'll have to stick with the wine and fig biscuits ;)
Thanks you guys!

Glad that the Senokot worked, shame that the fig biscuits were 'number 2' for you. Don't 'dump' the whole packet just yet as I'm sure they will 'make a splash' with your friends when you have them round for coffee.... (Ed: Thats enough)

Next time you are constipated, ribbit, let me tell you a couple of 'methods' we had to use when I was a nurse, to, erm, assist patients. Trust me, the thought of it would have you dashing to the loo in no time at all. :hihi:
Anyway, a very 'moving' story. :D

Anyway, a very 'moving' story.
Only tell us if they can be self-administered, though. There'd be no point, otherwise. :)
I don't much like resorting to taking pills for any problem...
My maths teacher used to say in his lessons "if you have a problem, work it out with a pencil."
  :hihi:
I'm straining to think of something funny to add here.
I'd like to blow you away with my great sense of humour. :hihi:
But constipation is a serious subject, so I must stop mucking about!
I really need to watch a Carry On film right now... :hihi:

Trust me, all of you, on this one. You really don't want to know ;)
Ribbit, you made me laugh so much!! As a bonus, you actually weren't too far off with the 'working it out with a pencil thing' :hihi:  Except.......it wasn't a pencil.......
As for the other method...... :hihi:
Don't worry, though, I was nursing with Flo Nightingale, and things have possibly changed a bit. Trust me. I used to be a nurse :hihi:

Hello :D
I can relate to your problem  . Ive been like it for several months but i know mine is due to gallstones  . Its a common problem with gallstones. In fact i hope mine will be greatly improved soon as i am in hospital on Friday 25th to have my gallbladder complete with a 3cm stone and many little ones removed...YIPEE. Do you get any pain on your right side underneath your right breast as its quite common to feel pain there and this pain radiates to your right shoulder blade.
Or have you tried Andrewes liver salts or enos? Maybe try lactulose solution bp which is available over the counter at the chemist. Make sure you ok it with the pharmacist and give some info about any medication you take so you are ok to take it.
GOOD LUCK :mexwave:

:) Yes, good luck bikergirly, you must be in agony with that stone! my granmother had the same problem, they did bust a few of them with ultrasound which she then passed 'normally' ) but eventually she just had the gallbladder removed, along with the most awful looking bunch of stones...quite gruesome!! :wow: :wow:
anyway we are going off topic here  (not that it matters particularly, eh folks!) but i hope it all goes well for you and you feel much better for it afterwards!
