Action taken to remove illegal dye found in wide range of foods on sale in UK

Just to re-produce this list here (see attachment) as www.food.gov.uk seems to be almost at a halt, probably because of the web traffic they must be experiencing!

The Food Standards Agency is today advising people not to eat foods that have been inadvertently contaminated with an illegal dye, Sudan I. This dye was in a batch of chilli powder used by Premier Foods to manufacture a Worcester sauce, which was then used as an ingredient in a wide range of products.

The Agency is working with the industry and local authorities to ensure that any remaining affected foods are removed from sale.

A list of affected foods is provided at http://www.food.gov.uk/sudanlist and will be updated as further information becomes available.

If people have any of these foods at home they are advised not to eat them and to contact the store they bought them from for a refund.

Food Standards Agency Chief Executive Dr Jon Bell said: 'Sudan I could contribute to an increased risk of cancer.

'However, at the levels present the risk is likely to be very small but it is sensible to avoid eating any more. There is no risk of immediate ill health.

'The Agency is working with the industry to ensure that any remaining affected products are speedily removed.

'Because of the widespread use of this Worcester sauce to flavour other foods, we may find further affected products. We will continue to take action to remove these and minimise the risk to consumers.'

The foods, including soups, sauces and ready meals, have been distributed widely. At least 350 food products are currently known to be affected.

The companies whose products are listed are co-operating with the Agency to ensure the products are withdrawn.

Sudan I is a dye that should not be added to food and is banned in the UK and across the EU. Since July 2003 all chilli powder imported into the UK has to be certified free of Sudan I.

The FSA and local authorities randomly sample more than 1,000 consignments a year of imported chilli products.

However, this batch predates this sampling programme and was uncovered after sampling of Worcester sauce produced by Premier Foods and exported to Italy.

Your questions answered

What is Sudan I?

Sudan I is a red dye that is used for colouring solvents, oils, waxes, petrol, and shoe and floor polishes. It is not allowed to be added to food in the UK and the rest of the EU. However, inadvertent contamination of some food products has been uncovered.

What is being done to tackle the problem?

The Agency is working with the food industry and local authorities to make sure that all the affected products are removed from the shelves and is tracing any foods that may be contaminated.

What is the health risk of Sudan I?

Sudan I could contribute to an increased risk of cancer and it is not possible to identify a safe level or to quantify the risk. However, at the levels present in these food products the risk is likely to be very small.

If I have eaten an affected product, has my health been damaged?

There is no risk of immediate illness. If you have eaten these products the risk is likely to be very small, and not eating them any more is a sensible thing to do.
Being exposed to a substance that could contribute to the development of cancer does not necessarily mean that you will develop cancer. There are many causes of cancer, including lifestyle and environment.

If the risk is very small why remove the foods?

Sudan I is thought to contribute to cancer, and consumers should not be exposed to it unnecessarily. Experts advise that exposure should be as low as practical. It is also illegal in foods.

Could I have some products at home that contain Sudan I?

A list of known affected products can be found at the link below. It will be regularly updated. If people have any at home they are advised not to eat them and to contact the store where they bought them for a refund.

Could restaurant meals or takeaways be affected?

Some restaurants and takeaways have been using products containing Sudan I. These products are being withdrawn.

What measures are in place to stop this happening again?

All dried and crushed or ground chilli coming into any EU Member State must be accompanied by a certificate showing they have been tested and found to be free of Sudan I. Any consignment that does not have a certificate is detained for sampling and analysis. Random sampling is also undertaken both at ports and by local authorities. All consignments found to contain Sudan I must be destroyed.

Thanks for the list.

What a shocker!

I was really worried reading the list and couldn't believe how much is on there. :( Fortunately for us we don't eat any of the foods listed there <PHEW!> but I felt terrible for the millions of people out there who are probably just that little bit more worried about what they eat now and have had to throw their food away (which some people may not even be able to afford  ).

Agreed there Mr Ribbit, enough to make you check the ingredients for everything! It does look like the FSA are advising people to get refunds on any of the products bought from stores, so that sounds hopeful, I hope refunds are obtained with no problems. :)

Just had another look at that list and they have added more - so it's worth keeping an eye on like Beth said :) .

I think we are allright here with the Worcester Sauce...or bottle passed it's sell-by date last year!!

I was in a shop earlier and someone was having a row with the assistant about the Pot Noodles. She was telling him he must remove them all because of this scare. He looked very bewildered and assured her they had removed all affected products, but she carried on. I couldn't help but butt in and tell her that it was actually only a few flavours affected - so thanks Matthew...if I hadn't read the full list, I would not have known either.

Oddly, the newspaper I got today didn't have the full list either...seems ridiculous to not print it in full  .

Nice one mazza!

Has there been an update to the lists today then? The last I can see was for yesterday (Friday).

I also thought yesterday was the 18th..so just ignore me!

I am getting quite cross about this now.

There are so many products withdrawn, yet I am still seeing them on the shop shelves :frown: . And it looks like many more products are going to be added to the list too - things like Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps...which I have seen all over the place today!

The info is just not getting out or being passed on - it's ridiculous!! On GMTV today, they were estimating that another 500 products could be listed and they were giving the head of the FSA a really hard time about it.

I am very glad that my family actually doesn't eat any of the products listed at all ( - phew! our Worcester Sauce is not the brand that's recalled) but what about others who are merrily tucking in every day and the stuff we don't yet know about?

It's so wrong, what on earth is a dye needed for anyway...let alone a toxic one?

I guess the lesson is to cook and prepare everything totally from scratch...at least you know what's going into it (apart from goodness knows what they use to help grow it like hormones, steroids, pesticides... )

Sheesh...

:badmood: :badmood: Hear hear , Mazza, I think its totally outrageous!

A woman I work with routinely eats pot noodles and she is having a panic attack over this!

Ok pot noodles arent the most healthy of foods in any case, but you should be able to munch one without thinking you are going to contract a potentially fatal illness!!!

I can't believe that this has all just "suddenly" come to light!

All these products with this dangerous dye in, and no-one knew?  ;)

A new food alert by the Food Standards Agency warns that seasoning mix in Old El Paso Dinner Kits have been contaminated by an illegal food dye.

The FSA said any risk of ill-health "is likely to be very small".

But it said it was "sensible not to eat either of the two affected products" - OId El Paso Enchilada Dinner Kits or Old El Paso Burrito Dinner Kits.

A statement by the agendy said: "The Agency is taking the precautionary step of advising people not to eat any of the contaminated food.

"People should return the product to the store where they purchased it, or direct to the manufacturer.

"They will receive a full cash refund or a replacement pack."

Para Red is chemically very similar to the cancer-causing Sudan 1 dye.

That was behind a huge food scare in Febuary which saw hundreds of food products withdrawn.

That scare cost millions of pounds.

Sudan I - normally used in shoe polish and other industrial products - was found in chilli powder used by Premier to make Crosse and Blackwell Worcester Sauce.

This was used in turn by manufacturers of large numbers of processed foods.

Here we go - another list of dodgy foods, this time contaminated with 'para-red' illegal dye  .

There's curry sauces on there - pretty popular with a lot of people, so I guess quite a few people will be affected by this one... :(.
