View Full Version : How do you relax from your nfh?

How do people manage to shut out their nfh (even if just for a short while) and get on with their lives?
Even when the nfh aren't in their pied a terre above us, as last night, it's hard to shut off from them, and every so often it drags one, or both of us down, and just leads to a bit of a depressed night.
I tend to go to the gym to work through some aggression on the basketball court or do some writing/cartoons/work on websites - what do other people do?
(I'm looking for advice as much as anything because I hate feeling I have to leave the flat when they're there and really I need something me and Elle can both do).

Hello,
For us its mainly anything to do with computers. I sell online and want to expand that, so that keeps me busy as well. Not forgetting finally sorting all our gear out after unpacking it all.
Also games that work for us and other people on here The Sims and Neighbour from Hell.

That makes perfect sense. :D
We try to play squash every no and then, but to be honest, when the nfh are getting us down, it's odd, but we don't feel like going out....
BTW, your avatar, is it from a Mutts cartoon? It seems familiar.

I suggested the Sims but there's no desire to immortalise the nfh in any form (even if it means being able to do loads of nasty things to them!).
We've just got broadband into the flat so I'm planning on expanding my little empire - plenty to keep me busy anyhow.

Hiya blackpud
I cant honestly say we have ever managed to 'shut them out'.. living so close its hard to sometimes..
My Hubbie and I are lucky-ish I guess that the NFH husband works away from home all week, and the NFH wife spends much of her time away from their property during the week also.. our problems with them always start on a Friday night when he returns home..
We have found ourselves out walking our dog at all hours of the night, our kids do tend to stay at either sets of grandparents of a weekend (this isnt because of NFH they have always done this since they were born).. Our circle of friends are also very good and a night down the pub with them helps us relax..

I got a digital camera for Christmas 2003 just before that trip and went mad with it! Photography is one thing I'd love to get into more- heck, why not add another interest to my mountain!

There is nowt wrong with not going along with society's expectations. And I hopes I grows up to be as young as you... ;)

Going out to eat is the one thing that really got us relaxed (until we had to go home), but the past ten months I was in the midst of an ill-advised career change that limited that and just added to the stress. Thankfully got a new job just before Christmas and things are looking up on the going out and getting about score!
(just read your story BTW, never a chance you were an nfh).

you could always spend a lot of time in the arcade here
my life is measure by minutes like a gold fish :hihi: i tell myself "one go of pyramid solitaire", i can't believe how 2 and half minutes can take hours out of the day  mah jong is the same
i also work on my site and play The Sims :D
I can't honestly say I ever relaxed, but I did love playing on the Nintendo (game cube, N64, SNES, whatever! :hihi: ) ands taking out my frustrations on the games :D

My relaxation choices are:
*playing the Sims 2
*Browsing Ebay and making bids
*Deep, hot bath with lavendar oil while wearing a face pack
*Watching comedy DVD collections - Phoenix Nights/Sex & the City/Only Fools and Horses etc ....laughter IS the best medicine and I like to think of the troll fuming as he hears shrieks of laughter wafting over!!
*Curling up with a good book
I agree, DG.
Ebay is great, and a lot of bargains can be had.
A nice hot bath. May I suggest a large glass of wine in the bath too? Works for me  By the way, I don't mean pour the wine in the bath :hihi:
DVD's - ones that don't require too much brain power preferably
Good book
Good music
Our NFh problem means we are firstly, not happy leaving the house, especialy if our children are here, as they are targetted too, so our R&R is home based.
Secondly, when we do go out, as we have to sometimes, then we don't want to come home again because of them. Doh! :nfh1:

Caterwauling on the PS2 - Hubby got me Karaoke SingStar for Christmas. It's a bit limited and there isn't much choice in tracks, but it's a laugh. Especially when playing in vs mode and the computer selects The Darkness for you. lol
when I get mad I clean! and when the NFH s were at their peak, I used to put my fav music on at a reasonable volume and clean, and sing along to it and dance with the hoover and open the windows, let light and air in and the cobwebs out........and then I would ram the hoover continueously into the skirting board  I am so ashamed!!
music and laughter
also get some happy food inside you both :) mash pototoe and chocolate are classed as happy foods, not sure why but it works for me! :D

Pud,
I'm right long with you with regards to not being able to relax even when they are not around. It's amazing how quickly nfh's can take over your life - to the point that when they are not there, you feel like there is something missing as being on edge becomes the norm.
My suggestion is:-
 Run a bath
 Lights some candles
 crack open a bottle of wine (beer will do!)
 pop on some "smooth" music
;) jump in the tub with Elle*
(*in tests, 2 out of 2 residents in this household prefer this technique as opposed to any other)
Works for us everytime. Doesn't make the nfh's go away but there is something very satisfying about reminding yourselves of all the good stuff you have in your life.....and the inevitable end results of a romantic tub together have a tendency to make us mere mortals feel invincible!
Happy splashing!

The Arcade. Many's the time I had our NFH in my sights on Foxhole 13 and blasted them to bits! :hihi:
Seriously, the arcade did help a great deal.
I don't relax either :( .
The last time I remember relaxing was when the evil cretins went on holiday...only thing was that I didn't know how long they'd be away for so the feeling kinda wore off after the second day .
Playing really easy kids board games helps a bit - give that 'Frustration' 'Pop-O-Matic' a good hiding!!
Otherwise the internet is all consuming to me when I am online!
(PS the arcade here is also really great  )

Ended up on the arcade last night.... Am now champion in 4 games! (though only 2 show under my avatar... :( )
We know that they aren't in the flat during the entirety of the school holidays, so at least have an idea when they're coming back so we can prepare ourselves.
The fact that they only stay in the flat when she's working, meaning he always has to travel to work in the mornings, shows you the balance of power in the relationship, and why he's always come across as reasonable (if a little wimpy), whereas she's the b**ch from hell!

jump in the tub with Elle*
:D The last time blackpud and I did that was in a very nice Scottish country house hotel in the middle of nowhere. We had a big tub in the middle of the floor and a nice chilled bottle of champagne. Wonderful. But you're right, we should do it at home one night and to h**l with the NFH! :P
One thing that does help a bit is hillwalking - there's nothing like standing on the top of a mountain on a beautiful sunny day when you can see for miles. It makes the NFH seem totally insignificant. Unfortunately the weathers not been very good up North so far but hopefully we'll be able to start climbing again soon.

The NFHiB Arcade does it for me! :D
And shopping in Morrisons - oh, the excitement of looking on my receipt to see how much of a multi-buy saving I've made...

Holly, forgive me, you need to get out more....
On the hillwalking I curse it all the way up the bleedin' hill, but it's always worth it for the feeling at the top.
Even more cursing if I'm hauling a bike up the hill, but EVEN MORE worth it for the adrenaline rush coming down (on routes that will not bring me into contact with walkers obviously - there are some absolutely superb designated MTB routes in Scotland and it's such a buzz I forget absolutely everything else while doingit).
