Rapped Spock - I boldy go on... Jan 13 2005

A Mr Spock lookalike remained unrepentant as he walked free from court yesterday after waging a foul-mouthed hate campaign against his former neighbours.

Roy Ives, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Captain Kirk's first officer in the TV series Star Trek who is known for keeping his cool in difficult situations, waged a campaign of fear against a couple, following an argument over some rubbish.

The 60-year-old doppelganger for Leonard Nimoy - described by www.toplookalikes.co.uk as the only Mr Spock "known to exist in this star system" - had admitted two counts of harassment causing fear of violence at an earlier hearing. He was conditionally discharged for two years and ordered to pay £250 costs.

Sir Andrew Watson, prosecuting, said in July 2002, Ives had moved next door to a 56-year-old disabled woman and her husband in Shard End Crescent, Shard End, and the dispute arose about a bag of plaster left outside the property.

Over a period of months, Ives was abusive to the victims and threatened the woman on one occasion that he would poison her grandchildren, the court heard.

Sir Andrew said Ives would also stand outside their front door, while the couple knew he was there, and had made a "cut throat" gesture to the husband.

He said the effect on the woman was to cause her to be permanently in tears and the couple had installed a camera to capture their neighbour's activities.

Martin Jenkins, defending, said the couple had played their part in what had happened and the husband especially had given as good as he had got.

He said Ives led a quite and solitary life and that he did a lot of charity work. He added: "Through his physical resemblance to a well-known TV character, he earned a little bit of spare money on the side. He is a Mr Spock lookalike although he's not wearing his pointy ears today."

Ives was told by Mr Recorder Stephen Campbell: "Your counsel has rightly characterised your behaviour as appalling. It was persistent, threatening and abusive behaviour."

The judge said he had taken into account that the neighbours had played some part in the dispute and the fact that Ives, who had since moved away from the area and now lived in Castle Bromwich, had a "significant" heart condition. After

the hearing, Ives remained defiant saying: "they have told a pack of lies about me I feel I have been the one who has been hurt here. It has been a utter nightmare." Asked whether he thought the court case would effect his work as a Spock lookalike he said: "I don't think so. I am a Vulcan not a Klingon. Live long and prosper." ..SUPL:
