Hi all, :)

Someone recently mentioned wishing they had GPS tracking for their children (in jest ;) ) but it prompted me to post this link.

http://www.fleetonline.net/ (http://www.fleetonline.net/fol/uk/en/)

It's a service that lets you register a mobile phone and then let's you check approximately where the phone is as long as it's switched on. Registration used to be simple, an account is set up, a text sent to the phone that's being tracked, the code from the text message is input somewhere (can't remember, think it's all done online) and then you just log in on the web to find out where the phone is located within a 50 m to 1 km radius.

My IT colleagues at work asked me to test this out about a year a ago (so it may have changed since then) and found it good for the cost compared to very expensive satelite tracking systems (which are also more accurate).

It is cheap BUT because it uses triangulated mobile phone signals to find the phone, the accuracy of 50 m and 1 km radius is quite broad (not like satelite tracking that pinpoints down to 3 metres I think - not sure though). We found it handy as all we wanted to do at the time was do some tests to check the location of a company's deliveries to help security and to protect the drivers.

If you need to keep an eye on a loved one (a child for example) and the approx location is good enough, this may be an attractive idea.

Just a thought anyhow. :D

Hmmm, didn't think of that!

I registered my phone privately at the time so that ribbit could 'see' where I was if she wanted to since I travel around the country so much (didn't want her to worry if she heard about a major motorway accident or something).

She never used it though - just phoned me and said 'Where are you? Is there a shop nearby that you could buy <insert product here> on the way home?'' instead. :hihi:
