TV personality Keith Chegwin was admitted to hospital on Christmas Day for emergency surgery to remove his appendix, his agent said today.

Chegwin was about to enjoy Christmas dinner with his wife Maria and six-year-old son Ted at their their home in Newbury, Berkshire, when the pain became too severe.

He was rushed to North Hampshire Hospital, in Basingstoke, where doctors diagnosed acute appendicitis and removed his appendix hours later.

Chegwin, 46, had been suffering with the pain over the past two weeks as he travelled around the country for GMTV’s On Your Doorstep presenting £10,000 cheques to people around the country.

Chegwin said today: “One minute I’m preparing my Christmas turkey, the next minute I’m the one who got stuffed.”

He said he was planning a second attempt at a family Christmas when he leaves hospital before the end of the week.

His agent, Tony Fox, said: “He has been going around the country for GMTV giving out prizes to different people, arriving on different people’s doorsteps and handing them cheques, making people’s Christmas dreams come true. The irony is his Christmas is ruined.”

He added: “He sounded uncomfortable and rather sore when I spoke to him but he’s OK and on the road to recovery.”

Chegwin started his career in children’s television and is famous for shows including Cheggers Plays Pop, Swap Shop and Saturday Superstore on BBC in the seventies and eighties.

He presented Channel 4’s Big Breakfast in the nineties and has recently appeared on GMTV.**
