I mean WHO CARES what time two trains traveling towards each other at 47mph from 678 miles apart will actually pass each other by?

It depends on what time they set off, but assuming it was 12:00pm, they would pass each other at 7:21.27pm

A more interesting problem would arise if they were travelling at different speeds, say 35mph and 56mph.

(P.S. my only phobia is wasps - can't stand the little blighters)

Bonkers Mad!!!

My other deep rooted fear is maths..I am convinced that it is only taught in schools to break the spirit of young people and modify them into controlled robot-like people who obey rules and don't ask questions. It's all a big government conspiracy if you ask me. I mean WHO CARES what time two trains traveling towards each other at 47mph from 678 miles apart will actually pass each other by? Algebra is just pure evil, I am nearly 33 years old and I have NEVER found it to be of any use in my life at all!!! And don't even get me started on triganometry!!!!!!

same as that, carrie 'cept i'm nearly 34

i'm actually quite scared of dreaming but i'm not sure if that is the same as being afraid of dreams. i dont feel as though i'm scared of dreams, just of dreaming, that doesnt make sense does it?

I loved maths at school... especially simultaneous equations.

There's one other thing that I'm really afraid of... metal grids on the ground or gridded metal stair cases... any surface you walk over that isn't solid. There seem to be a lot of large ones in London  . I can't walk over them... I don't know why.

:o :o @ Ribbit....you really opened something up there for me!!!! I hate walking over metal grids as welll

the other day I was up in town, in a very swanky place...had to go downstairs to get to the conference room...the stairs were glass...i am not kidding, I was having total palpitations and was sweating by the time i got to the bottom :crybaby: :crybaby: and all through the seminar I was dwelling on the fact I would have to walk back up them... :wow: :wow:

I dont like bridges or flyovers where you can see what is below and I really dont like those old wooden piers with little gaps between the boards so you can see the sea!

ooh im all of a quiver...better go and get a relaxing herbal :coffee:

Bonkers Mad!!!

But what if there's leaves on the tracks? ;) Or the 'wrong kind of snow' perhaps?! ;) :D

Easy, you just need to add the co-efficient of friction for a metal/leaf or metal/snow junction into the mix to calculate the changing speed. However, having changing speeds will mean you'll need to use a differential equation to find the time they meet.

Alternatively, in the above case they may *never* meet as both will probably be cancelled!
