Hey there everyone! :D

I was talking to a young gentleman (11 or 12 years old) the other day, he's the son of a work colleague. Very pleasant, well mannered young chappie and we got into a big discussion about computer games and how brilliant they are, what they were like 25 years ago, how much they've changed, where it's going in the future, etc, etc. as you do  .

Anyhow, I told him I've played Resident Evil 3 something like 60 times or more  and asked if he found it hard to play. The response was "Naaaa! I've got a cheat thingie with all the codes. It was easy! :D " .

I said, "Don't you play the game at least once before trying out any cheats or guides?" and he looked at me like   and said "Why would I do that?!"

 It made me wonder about how things have changed (or have they? ) for the younger generation of today and how people perceive cheating, taking shortcuts or relying on the easy way out. Cheat books and magazines are common in the shops and libraries, it's become part of today's culture.

Is this all harmless or do you have reservations about how this has slipped into being 'normal' for everyone? What do you think?

Well, I suppose I would say that its a bit daft, getting a game and then using cheats to play it...but then again, you can get stuck with these things and so a little help is sometimes in order....

The only cheat guide I ever had was for the Rubiks cube...because I really needed to know how to do that stupid thing!!!

The only time I'd use one of those cheat guides would be if I just couldn't get past a part of the game, and if I didn't find a way I'd have to stop playing it.

I think there's no point in playing a game and using all the cheats without trying to find your own way through... there's no point in playing. Much like life really... you've got to experience the problems, the trying, to learn and achieve something. No point having a manual to tell you what to do and how to do it.

I've never been one for the easy route.

I avoid using any guides or cheats on my first run through a game (minimum) but will look through a guide after that to see if there are any 'juicy bits' that@ i've missed.

I don't use cheats as I don't see the point in going through a game without any challenges.

On a serious note, I have wondered how a 'cheat' culture affects growing young soon-to-be adult's perceptions of how to achieve results in the 'real' world. Not having young 'uns myself, I wondered if I hadn't given young soon-to-be adults enough credit to see the difference between taking short cuts in a game and short cuts in life - I imagine it's all down to good parenting!

On a much lighter note, for anyone who gets stuck in a game, doesn't know where to turn for help, etc. then you should make a visit to GAME FAQS (http://www.gamefaqs.com) for all the answers.

I don't tend to use cheats, mainly because having spent a small fortune on the game I'm reluctant to spend yet more money on a cheats book!

I have to confess to regularly playing games on 'Easy' mode though

I've never used cheats on a game, not even on any of the Zelda games, because the fun for me is finshing the game, but solving the puzzles throughout! :D

I get the impression that some games are designed so that only those with cheat codes can win!

Urm... Anyone got a cheat for Scrabble? ;) :hihi:
