View Full Version : Fave Kitchen Gadgets
Hmmm, all this talk of breadmakers has set my mind thinking about what kitchen gadgets or appliances I actually use out of all the clutter in there (except the obvious, like the kettle  ) .
I have a steamer and I find I use it almost every day - it's fantastic for fresh veggies and fish
I also use a hand blender everyday too - mainly for baby food, but it's brill for whipping up milkshakes, whisking batters, soups etc :)
Alas the breadmaker and the big fancy pants food processor sit forlornly, gathering dust in the far corners of the cupboards  . I think I don't use them because they're too much bother for me to clean up!
I have all manner of utensils too - my latest addition is long handled tea spoons - brill for scraping out jars :D .
I couldnt do with out my electric tin opener!
I also have this great plastic spaghetti spork! its like a big spoon but has prongs to catch the pasta, its great!!
 @ Beth!!
I have a spaghetti fork too - the cheapo-est plastic-est thing ever (cost me 50p - new, mind  ) and I use that loads too - it's also great for fishing boiled eggs out of the pan! :D
Electric can opener...that must be one of the few things I don't have!! Hmmmmm...

I have a Tefal Grill, like the George Foreman thing but with the Tefal one you can totally remove the grill plates for washing (in the dishwasher).
I use it so much, it cooks beautifully. before i had it i used a griddle pan which was OK but the Grill is much quicker.
And no home should be without an electric whisk.
the worst gadget i have is a smoothie maker, its much too big and cumbersome and really i dont know what it does that an ordinary blender/liquidizer on a food processor couldnt do.

We have a kettle, a toaster and a breadmaker. Oh! And a Microwave too. ;) We have a foodmixer/blender and make smoothies in that, after seeing the price of the Smoothie maker! :o
We also have one of those yoghurt makers and an icecram maker which will be out in the summer!

I love my food processor  We got it for making pureed baby food, but now I use it for everything :) Making soup, chopping vegetables, pancake and cake mixes, milkshakes, grating cheese/apple etc. etc.

Corkscrew

Easily pleased!
Gotta be my corkscrew that also has a sharp bit for getting the plastic bit off the wine bottles too.
Couldn't do without the microwave either
Best thing ever though - my Pest Offense! Plugged in in the kitchen, don't have a spider or anything in my house, even wasps and flies stop at the door and turn around!

Mmmm....well it looks on balance that the overall favourite kitchen gadget is the good ole corkscrew  :wine:
Funny that!

Before the breadmaker (which I now adore) my favourite gadget was a set of professional knives (ok .. mayby not so much a gadget as a tool) but they were oh so sharp - made food prep dead easy.
FF
P.S. I agree with the bottle opener bit Blue Cow :)
Ice cream maker!! I have one of those too - gathering dust along with all the other stuff  It makes nice ice cream, but I need to store the base in the freezer, which is a real pain (takes up too much space) .
George Foreman grills (or similar) seem to be popular :) .
Corkscrews eh? Oh yesss, I have a few of those!
I have one with arms that lift up as you screw it into the cork, then lever the cork out by pushing them down. Also one that just turns and turns and somehow pulls the cork out..one that you just turn and then use all your might to pull the cork...one that pumps in air to force the cork out...and one like a waiter uses that hooks onto the side of a bottle and is used to lever the cork out
I think I like the 'pull the arms down' one best ! :wine:
I don't know how we've come to have so many...anyone would think we're raving drunkards!!! (we aren't before you all start !!! :hihi: )

Don't usually post on here but without a shadow of a doubt my fave kitchen gadget has got to be the dishwasher.
Can put all the dirty dishes in there during the day so they don't clutter the work surfaces and just pop a tablet in at night and switch it on ready for emptying in the morning.
Gets everything far cleaner than washing in the sink by hand as well. :D :D
Of course - dishwasher
It certainly saved my relationship from breaking up!!
It was either a dishwasher or adios amigo :P

Well I've never had a bee come in the house while I've had it!!! You sees wasps, flies and the like come to the door, then turn round and fly away, its quite amusing
I bought it off satellite TV, one of those stations where you think "will this gadget work"? and it really does, no spiders, mice, flies, bees, wasps or anything come in my house

My wife got a few gadgets on her hen night (kitchen gadgets *before* you ask!)
One of them was a ring shaped item with two handles - you squeezed the handles and sharp teeth popped out of the ring, slicing whatever was inside - apparently its for taking the tops off boiled eggs! never used it yet, but sometimes the wife threatens me with it when the washing up needs doing! (nudge nudge, wink wink)

Can I borrow that gadget? We've just employed a cabbage in our office, he needs a bit of a wake up call!

Might have to hear a bit more about the steam cleaner and your oven mazza ;)
Forgot this gadget before, but it is a good one IMO and used quite often  ;)
:o
I've got one of those too - exactly the same model!!! :hihi:
I'll see how the steam cleaner deals with my rank shower cabinet before the ultimate judgement!!

I'm still interested to learn about your fave kitchen gadgets though :)
I have seen a coffee/milk frother for £1 in IKEA!! I quite like my one (but it cost a lot more than that - tsk) :D
