Ooo...it looks really weird!!

It looks a bit claustrophobic for what it's supposed to be though.

For some reason, that has made me think of that awful accident in Russia - did you all see it on the news - where the roof of a swimming pool collapsed

that was a terrible sight :(

Oh, that was horrible, Annabel :( People who did escape were only in bathing costumes and the temp was -15 so lots suffering from frostbite as well :(

What popped into my mind when I saw the pics was that film 'Truman' with Jim Carey, the bit where he tried to leave in a boat ;)

I have heard of that seaside place in Japan B)

It's a real hit with them because they can't take many holidays per year and it saves them spending time travelling abroad for the lovely tropical beaches!

I quite like the idea of it...she says, moping out the window at the dreary, damp, dark sky... It's just a different sort of Center Parcs kind of thing really :) .

Oooh, that thing in Russia, it really turned my stomach to see all those poor people in their bathers in the rubble and freezing cold like that  . It was the enormity of the collapse that was so shocking.

Thanks Vanner,
Almost positive this is in Japan .
Really have to admire the Japanese. Without going into the history this
was a very poor country 50 years ago.
I saw a documentry showing the emphasis they placed on discipline and
education for their kids as the means to build the wealth of their country.
What ever they did it worked. An acquaintance went there for a business trip
.. he described the experience as mind blowing.
On holiday in Hawaii we were on a flight between islands ,were the only two
passengers who weren't Japanese.
Paradoxically the trip was to find the grave of my wife's dad. He fought
against the Japanese in the Pacific and in his 70's went back to Hawaii for
holidays. He had left instructions that should he pass on he wished to be
buried there .
The other comment concerning Japan I've heard is that it is a male dominated
society . I witnessed a small incident on this holiday that to my mind
confirmed this. ( I hope this post gets buried quick after that bit).
Apologies for going off at a tangent.

At the risk of going off topic, the japanese economy is and will continue to be in a parlous state until they root out inefficiencies and corruption particularly in their banking system, and the problem they have with deflation (whilst easing slightly) is a threat to all our economies. i read stories of men working for nothing rather than be made unemployed and face the shame of having to tell their families .its a shame that such a successful country that worked so hard after the war to rebuild itself has turned the wrong corner like this.

Well it was a Japanese scene at the start of this thread so will add a bit.
I'm afraid I would be somewhat skeptical of reports that the Japanese economy
is in a major crisis. The media can and do distort the truth.
Living in this part of the world I guess that a holiday on a pacific island or in south east asia is our
equivalent to a holiday in europe for you guys.
We were fortunate enough to have a short holiday in Bali (Indonesia) over 10 years ago now.
I was really fascinated by the amazing artwork these people produce .
Aproximately 4 years after this trip there was a serious economic crisis that
affected that part of the world. I read an article at this time that tourists had
taken advantage of the very weak Indonesian currency and cleaned out all the
artwork.
When the opportunity came up for another Bali holiday a couple of years later
I didn't hesitate. I'd given priority to seeing for myself the "disappearing artwork"
so hired a taxi the first day there to travel to the "arts and crafts " area of the
island. Well it was still there no empty shelves as far as I could see.
As everything is handmade some of the larger intricate pieces must take months
if not years to produce.
This was no relaxing holiday I managed to pickup a foot infection via a very minor cut.
By the time our group made it to the airport for the flight home I was
starting to hobble quite badly. It was a welcome sight to see the Airbus on the
tarmac that was taking us home.
Mind you this plane looked tiny next to the huge Japanese airline plane close
by .
I must get round to reading a newspaper in case I have got this all wrong.

Is it me, or is there an actual beach not too far from that beach-building?
