LORD and Lady Arran donated their Winter Fuel Allowance so that some of North Devon's most vulnerable people could receive the help they needed.
The gesture formed part of the Christmas Unwrapped appeal by Devon Community Foundation (http://www.thisisnorthdevon.co.uk/topics/company/devoncommunityfoundation).
The organisation supports voluntary groups working with the isolated elderly, young carers, the homeless, those with mental health problems and children and families living below the poverty line.
As temperatures fall to the lowest in years, the government Winter Fuel Allowance of £250 per household is paid to all over-60s regardless of whether they need it or not.

The foundation hopes wealthier recipients who do not need the allowance will follow the example of Lord and Lady Arran.
Money raised through the Christmas Unwrapped appeal has already supported local groups such as the Freedom Social Project, Harbour in Bideford and the North Devon Footcare project.
Lady Arran said: "This is a way to help support people who are vulnerable and in need both this Christmas and into the next year and to support the county's amazing voluntary groups in their work to help improve the quality of life for young and old in Devon."
Mole Valley Farmers has also pledged its support to the Christmas Unwrapped appeal with a donation of £1,000.
Chief executive Andrew Jackson said: "As a local company with our roots firmly in the local community, we're delighted to be backing this extremely worthwhile appeal which will see money go directly to the frontline voluntary groups helping people most in need locally.
"At what's probably the busiest time of year for most retailers, it's good to stop and spare a thought for those who aren't in a position to enjoy Christmas and won't be spending it with family and friends."
