Teenagers have been shown the devastation fireworks can cause as they officially went on sale across Greater Manchester ahead of bonfire night.
A dramatic simulation of a rocket exploding in someone’s hand was staged behind Manchester Central Fire Station.
Eleven teenagers watched as a dummy was blasted with a huge explosion, which was only a tenth of the power of some illegal fireworks.
Michael Platt, 19, from Colshaw Road, Newall Green, said: “A lot of my mates used to play with fireworks, but I didn’t think anything like that could happen to them. I won’t be playing with them ever again.”
Natalie Hoy, 18, from Wendon Road, Wythenshawe, said: “It just shows that if you see anyone messing around you should discourage them, because you don’t realise how much damage they can cause.”

In 2002 two boys from Greater Manchester lost hands in firework accidents.
Adam Sotheron, 18 at the time, was lighting a three-and-a-half foot rocket on wasteland in Salford when it exploded unexpectedly, causing devastating injuries to his hand.
A 15-year-old boy suffered injuries to his hand and chest when he set off a large firework in a classroom cupboard at Elton High School in Bury.
Various organisations, including the fire service, police and Trading Standards are highlighting the safety message.
Station Commander Paul Duggen said: “Our hope is to stop people losing a finger, hand, eye or even their life by misusing fireworks.”
Trading Standards are targeting retailers who sell fireworks to children, or sell illegal makes such as bangers and air-bombs.
Fireworks are on sale until 10 November
