I have to say that I loved the film.

In my opinion, it's just that he didn't embrace the bushido. He followed them, understood them because they are warriors, and they have been through the same kind of horror. But he didn't embrace bushido, he didn't become a samurai.

That's why he doesn't commit seppuku. Moreover, Matsumoto tells him he has regained his honour, and he doesn't need to die here; in Matsumoto's mind too, Algren is not bound to the rules of bushido, just a brother in arms.

A ripping yarn :)

POSSIBLE SPOILER:

I think it owed a couple of scenes to Henry V (Olivier version) - arrows and cavalry charge - though not done so well.

A man's film - 'let's die a glorious death even though we don't have a chance'. Nowhere near as good as the tv series 'Shogun' but entertaining and forgivably shallow given the time constraints :)

PS, how many bullets did he take?

Hazelnut, there's not really any comparison to Shogun, apart from the fact that Richard Chamberlain and Tom Cruise both end up in samuai costume.

Vernon, Shogun was a tv serial starring Richard Chamberlain and set in 16th Century Japan. It also starred Toshiro Mifune who was also in The Seven Samurai. And I think the western series you are referring to is 'Kung Fu' about Kwai Chan Caine who is looking for his brother in the days of the old west.

And 17 bullets? I think that would be an underestimate ;)

Did anybody who saw the film think Matsumoto (?) was very like Yul Brynner?

lol - I've just completely spoiled the film for myself now! Shogun was fantastic - the books are just as good (James Clavell) - well worth a read, although Tai Pan is probably the best after Shogun.
