CCTV cameras have captured footage of an unknown woman dropping a cat into a wheelie bin, provoking outcry from animal lovers everywhere and a hunt for the phantom kitten binner (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Woman-Caught-On-Security-Camera-Dumping-Kitten-In-Wheelie-Bin-For-No-Apparent-Reason/Article/201008415703029?f=rss) -- a hunt that's proven so successful that she has now been taken into police protection, Sky News reports (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Woman-Who-Put-Cat-In-Bin-In-Coventry-Is-Identified-By-RSPCA-And-Given-Police-Protection/Article/201008415704447?lpos=UK_News_First_UK_News_Article _Teaser_Region_3&lid=ARTICLE_15704447_Woman_Who_Put_Cat_In_Bin_In_C oventry_Is_Identified_By_RSPCA_And_Given_Police_Pr otection).
As you can see from the video clip below, the grey-haired culprit walks up beside the cat, starts stroking it, and then after an incredibly shady check for whether the coast was clear, promptly pops it in the wheelie-bin close at hand and paces off for a quick getaway.
Its owners discovered their precious puss Lola 16 hours after the cat was dumped, hunting around nearby alleyways before hearing her startled mews for help.
Daryll and Stephanie Andrews-Mann, from Coventry, promptly took the case to the RSPCA and the police, the former describing the incident as a "mindless act of animal cruelty". The organisation is reportedly considering whether to press charges.
But now the huge amount of attention the clip has been getting has forced the police to prevent not just cruelty to animals but cruelty to humans too. After a series of apparent death threats online the woman in question is being kept safe by the police (http://www.asylum.co.uk/2010/08/24/woman-caught-on-cctv-throwing-cat-in-wheelie-bin-for-no-appar/).
