View Full Version : Scots outrage over darker mornings as Cameron backs plan to move clocks forward perma
I read this in the paper this morning and I think it is a great idea - however some of the Scots don't seem to like and never have done, what really annoyed me was a quote from Angus MacNeil, Nationalist MP for the Western Isles,
".... There are alternatives which would balance the interests of all who share these islands - including setting Daylight Saving Time closer to midwinter or encouraging people down south to get up earlier to enjoy the morning sunshine.'
What a cheek, saying that we should get up earlier

I know that the elderly would like the extra hour in the afternoon as if they are on their own it is depressing to shut in so early, it makes such a long evening for them .... well and us really ;)
think of the electric people would save by not having to put lights on till late, also a lot safer for children coming home from school during winter months

The dark winter mornings make it more difficult to get out of bed which is why I am favour of the sunshine in mornings and getting earlier to bed.
This was in the paper again this morning; and there was another comment made -
Scottish Labour’s Shadow Minister for Community Safety James Kelly MSP said: ‘These proposals are badly thought out and will quite literally leave Scotland in the dark.
'We have deep concerns about children’s safety walking to school in the dark winter mornings.’Quite honestly instead of telling us to get up an hour earlier why don't the children in Scotland go to school an hour later  Our children come home in the dark ....
In this day and age I wonder how many children do actually walk to school in Scotland in the winter; apart from the residents on the small Scottish islands of course. Two people were interviewed from Scotland on the news and they seemed all for the clocks changing - so who are these people who are against this change

i dont like the idea . i have no clever arguments for keeping things the way they are except that it's worked up until now and i like the clocks going backwards and forwards . if it aint broke why fix it?

My son walks to school everyday in winter. It takes him about half an hour too. Its dark when he leaves and its dark when he gets home.
This debate comes up every year. It was tried during the war then we reverted back, so it must have some merits. I think it was mainly to do with farming. They discovered that the daylight saving was needed for farmers to get more production done later in the day.
The fact is, when the did away with this people in the very North of Scotland were in darkness until about 10am in the morning and darkness started about 6. The whole process began with the creation of GMT in the 1800 which was to allow for timetabling of trains as the Scottish and English clocks were about 2 hours out between the most Northerly point and the most southerly point.
another point is, whty should scottish children have to be in school until about 6 or 7 pm to allow English kids an easier time. The daylight saving changes allowed everyone to get as much daylight as possible. As it is, Scotland has the least daylight in the UK. It gets light at about 8.30 am and dark by about 4pm, and thats in central Scotland. Changing it would plunge us into longer darkness.
I really don't want to see any changes either - as BM says 'if it aint broke why fix it?'
RB makes very valid points about the affects it would have on Scotland too
why should scottish children have to be in school until about 6 or 7 pm Hi rb I am just curious why would you say they could be at school that late on a normal school day, I may be a little out of touch here but I thought school started around 8:45am - 9:00am and finished around 3-3:15pm. Is it different in Scotland?
My son walks to school everyday in winter. It takes him about half an hour too. Its dark when he leaves and its dark when he gets home.So did mine when they were of the age to do so on their own, my step-son (who left school about 6 years ago) also used to walk to and from school and it took him an hour!!!! In the dark, rain, snow whatever the weather threw at him! And it didn't do him any harm in fact he still walks everywhere, he actually refuses to buy a car even though he can drive
Trouble is with this is there are so many valid points pro's and con's; IMHO this is going to become very political - I personally hate shutting in so early in the afternoon the days are short and the nights are long; and for a lot of people sometime depression sets in ... Perhaps there should be a referendum to see what the public really want instead of leaving it to the powers that be!!!
i like the clocks going backwards and forwards :yes:Didn't I read somewhere that the purpose of this is that it will only be left for one year then we will start putting the clocks backwards and forward again to bring us in line with parts of Europe? Maybe I heard it on the news but I know someonw said it

We do start at between 8.30 and 9 am here, it was just that someone had suggested in the thread that the scots kids should go to school an hour later in winter to avoid the clocks changing. If we did that, we would be in school until about 5 or 6. In the north for the daylight they would have to add on 2 hours for the daylight taking it to 6 or 7. Staff would likely be there until about 7 or 8 then to make up their hours.

I think you find that all Scottish school children are either walking to and from school in the dark or walking for their buses in the dark down unlit country roads during the winter and that is WITH the day light saving. Remove that and the school children will barely see any day light during school hours, particularly up North.
Having been someone who has lived most of my life in Southern England the amount of day light here during the seasons still shock me after 10 years.......you really need to be in Scotland to realise the entire problem during winter
I get really fed up in the winter - I think the whole country should change its culture and have winter opening hours - so start work/school at 10 am, finish 4 latest . I hate getting up in the cold and dark and having to sc rape my car of ice, let it waste fuel defrosting and warming up, likewise having to put every light on in the house whilst we get ready etc. It really irritates me, it's such a waste of fuel and resources and for what?? Who really needs to be in work that early or school that early when it is so blooming cold and miserable?? (emergency and essential services excepted etc etc ;) ). It's just a mad thought I have...maybe a bit too radical...

I too get fed up with winter it just seems to always last longer than our summer  Our Summer has disappeared already and I for one am noticing how cold and damp everywhere is at the moment; seems a long time past when the temp was 33 degrees in our garden now ? ... well less said the better  But that idea sounds good Mazza ;) probably won't happen but hey one can dream :)
