Everything that a common cold has to offer and I have got at the moment. The only benefit is to everyone else as I can hardly talk :(

At one time I wouldn't bother taking anything but am accepting that I am getting older, so you have to now really, don't you?

So, have been taking today what my parents used to give me many years ago (not too many  )

Hot water with fresh lemon and Real Honey. :glug:

Had forgotten how good Honey tasted.

Anyone else have any other old remedies? Good or Bad..

colds are nasty, and we are encouraged to pop paracetomls for everything

paracetamols lower your tempreture so make you feel better for a while but the germs are still there. heat kills germs

if I have a cold I heat my self up!
kill the germs!! :double:

take ginger, -tea, or capsules or in its natural form
have a hot bath
get your warmest pjs on
get into a warm bed
and dont forget your hot water bottle!

you must drink plenty of fluids though, people have already mentioned herbal teas, nothing with milk as that causes phlem

and dont let your self get so hot it turns into a fever!!!

sore throats - gargle with fresh pinapple juice, it contians a sore throat germ killing enzeme thingy and it reall works

hope you feel better soon :flowers:

I remember reading somewhere that during the great flu pandemic of 1918 it was noticed that workers in the cinnamon industry didn't get the flu. So I put half a teaspoon of cinnamon in my porridge everyday, also add a bit of stewed apple, mmmm. I also take cinnamon because it's been found to help diabetics. Lowers blood sugar and chloresterol apparently.

Another preventative is garlic but check the allicin content if you take capsules or pearls. When I've come down with cough or cold I use the old honey, lemon and hot water thing but I add crushed garlic and thyme. Garlic is a natural antiseptic and antibiotic and thyme contain thymol which is good for sore throats. Needless to say you have to strain the mixture before you drink it ;)

Sounds like it

I agree with chicken soup - I read quite recently that it is excellent for all sorts of ills.

And for some reason when I get a cold, I crave spicey food like curry - the heat from the chillies seems to help clear all the mucous :) .

Prune juice or cranberry juice are very good for vitamin C content. I think there's no higher anti-oxidant (good for helping healthy cells) content than in prune juice.
And it's a good idea to drink it with your food to help absorb all the nutrients from your food more readily.

Don't forget to take plenty of fluids like clear water or herbal teas - ginger and lemon is a good one and also camomile. Really whack up the water intake to about 1.5 - 2 litres a day. (we should all do this really, ill ot not  ).

Some poeple swear by taking an echinacea supplement too and some books I have read suggest it is beneficial to the immune system :) .

:D

ooh I know, I've only ever eaten them with custard for school dinners :o ...nearly bought a bottle of the juice today for the OH, but then put it back...I may be brave another day

It's supposed to be GOOD for you :P :D

My SIL gives prune juice to her kids as she thinks it will keep them 'regular', i tasted a bit and found it really sweet, and yukky, no thanks.

when i have a cold, i like to have eucalyptus oil on a tissue, if i havent got that then olbas oil and i really like herbal lemon teas, especially ones with ginger added because as beth says it kinda raises your temperature a bit and helps flush out the germ. so i think eating spicy food would help as well, as mazza says

i find that head massage is the ultimate best thing for a headache, I wish i could have one every time i had a migraine!!!

i can also vouch for Arnica, it is excellent for any kind of knock or bump.

if you have a belly ache you can rub your belly ( in clockwise direction ONLY) with warmed up olive oil.

Coca Cola :P

Take some fresh ginger and put it in a pot with a can of Coca Cola. Let it come to a boil and then cook on a
low heat for a few minutes. Drink while warm. It will ease your cold symptoms..

If you are nauseated open a can of Coke and let it stand until the carbonation goes away,
then take a teaspoonfull every hour, It really works.

Coke can also be used to relieve the sting from Jelly Fish. All you have to do is pour the Coke over the sting.

Hiccups, take a good mouthful of Coke and gargle it. Hiccups are gone each and every time.

On the tanning side. Those that are extremely difficult to tan, apply coke instead of a tanning cream does the trick.

Gum in your Hair!. Just take the gum coated hair and dip in a small bowl that has some Coca Cola in it. Let sit for a few
minutes and the gum will wipe right off.

To make a new photo look antique, just take a photo (make sure you have a second print
of the photo in case you mess up!!)
and soak it in Coca Cola. Just used a small dish and pour in about 1/2 inch of Coca Cola.
Then put in the photo until it is covered with the cola. Just soak for a few minutes until
you get the color that you want. Gently lift out the photo (careful not to touch the front
with your fingers). Then gently pat dry with a soft lintless material. Or, drip dry.
Then finish drying with a hair dryer. Wa-La... antique photo!.

Coca Cola is the perfect grout cleaner for tile floors! A can of of Coca Cola on a kitchen floor.
When wiped up, the grout is as white as can be !!.

Use it to remove oil stains from the Driveway!. It's well known that the best way to remove oil
stains from concrete driveways or garages is to pour on coke, let it soak then hose off - Viola!

Greener Grass...Spray an inexpensive cola on your grass once a month for super green grass which remains
greener than other lawns throughout the fall and winter months. This really works! Also, for green grass
and no bugs, combine: 1 can of coke, 1 cup of ammonia and 1/4 cup of dish soap. Spray on grass once a month.

Add a 2 litre coca cola (the real thing!) to your kettle and let it settle for a day.
Then rinse your kettle out a few times and wipe clean and kapow its clean! Your
kettle is now de-scaled and dirt free!

Kills Rats. Put some in small trays. Rats cannot belch. They are attracted to the taste of the Coca Cola
and will drink large quantities of it only to be unable to belch the carbonated drink and they will actually
explode. Other animals and birds are apparently not attracted to the drink....

To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl. Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean.
The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

mazza
25-01-04, 10:11 PM
Vanner are you on commission!!! ?

Put a bit of coke in a glass, drop a penny in it.

Come back a day later and see it all shiney now.

Now, imagine what that is doing to your insides

I know WitchHazel will draw a bruise out.

I had my Wisdom teeth out a few years ago and I was told to put it on my cheeks to draw the swelling and bruise out which I think it did.

It didn't do anything about the fact I looked like a hamster with a mouth full of nuts but at least you got to see the bruises

And neither did the tooth fairy come to see me even tho I put 4 big whoppers of Ivory under me pillow.......but thats a different story so don't be dis-heartened children, I was asking for too much money because they were so big (plus the ex-hubbie was tight)

Mazza - Camomile is a soothing quantity - used it about 10 years ago when I had Chicken Pox because that is what thwe doctor told me to use but just dont get it mixed up with the Kaholine and Morphine mixture for your tummy

Cranberry juice is good for the water works

But what is it with Chicken Soup??

Is this something for Beth and Google to answer  ??

As for Coca Cola - I always thought that is why it was called that - because it had the element of Cocaine extracted from it  am I being rather thick here or what??

Place a SMALL amount of coke in a glass. Add a LARGE amount of rum. You will then find the taste of the coke much improved.

Lol Eskander

My brother in law was in the REME and they used to use coke to get all the chrome bits on the vehicles sparkling.

migraine relief - sniff one peppermint essential oil, it works much faster than pain relief, and if you do take pain relief, then take them with a fizzy drink to get it into your system fast. the reason that migraines take so long to burn out so to speak is that your digestive system shuts down when in full blown attack therefore the pain relief doesn't get a chance to work!

unfortunately my 6 yr old has had a couple of migraines, so i've had to do a lot of research, i've also had one, a real blinder but at least i'll know how to avoid a full blown one in the future :)

my mum gets migraines, as does my big bro, mums are triggered by rowntrees chocolate - kit kats and the like, but not cadburys!! ( or possibly the other way around?? ) lol bro gets them when he's generally run down, tired stressed and hungry all at the same time, so tries to avoid that situation.

chocolate, cheese and coffee are the main culprits apparantly.

not sure my lil one will grow out of it, but at least it is manageable :)

As requested!

Chicken soup was apparently established as a cold and flu remedy about 800 years ago when Maimonides, court physician to Saladin, the caliph of Egypt, first recommended chicken soup. Throughout time, it has proven to be highly effective against the flu virus when significant amounts of onion and garlic -- foods with natural anti viral and antibiotic properties -- are added to it. Researchers have found that hot chicken soup itself seems to increase the flow of mucus. Although researchers aren't sure whether it's the soup's aroma or the taste, they've found that chicken soup helps make your nose run, shortening the transit time which germs spend inside your nose and body. The faster you can move germs out of your system the faster you recuperate.

Vitamin C daily as a preventative against the common cold is essential.
One old fashion remedy I tried once and it seemed to work was to go
and do some really hard physical activity and sweat the cold out.
Alternative "cure" would have to be lemon juice and whisky!!!!!

You have all passed your cold onto my little one - TUT!!

I found some 'Olbas Oil for Children' in the shop, never seen that before (know about the adults one though :) ) and thought I'd give it a whirl.

I put a few drops on a flannel tied to his cot and it really seems to work settling him down. I just put some on earlier and he got up to have a big sniff of it and then passed out (!!) quite happy, asleep
