St George's Avenue residents group raise placards on the green demanding police intervention

'OUT OUT OUT!'

Those were the words being shouted by a group of residents who demanded that police remove a neighbour they claim is intimidating them.

A 30-strong group gathered on the green at St George's Avenue with placards early on Monday afternoon and one of the residents, Helen Brickstock said that people were tired of living in fear because of one nuisance man and his family.

She claimed that children are too frightened to play on the green and accused the police of doing nothing to help them.

She added: "We are here today because we want justice and we want the police to act.

"We want them out of here - today."

Ms Brickstock said the protest followed a number of incidents over the past few months in which the 39-year-old man allegedly threatened her and other residents.

However she said the situation escalated at the weekend and police were called in to intervene on Sunday.

Thames Valley Police spokesman, Adam Fisher, said that after receiving the call they arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of public disorder and for being in possession of an offensive weapon.

He added that the man had now been released on police bail on the condition that he does not return to St George's Avenue.

Ms Brickstock's sister, Sally West, said the protest was a "last resort" and that people wanted the man and his family moved permanently away from the area.

She said: "We want to co-operate with the police and we don't want to cause trouble, but we do want this family out."

A number of police officers attended the protest to calm the situation and acted as a go-between the group and the family, who had stayed in their home throughout the incident.

After a tense few hours police said the family would be removed from the area until they decided what to do with them.

Chief Inspector Judith Johnson, local police area commander for West Berkshire, said: “There is an ongoing dispute between families in this road and tensions heightened over the weekend.

"It is difficult for police to comment in detail as there are ongoing criminal investigations.
"However, we have increased high visibility patrols in the area and are liaising with people on both sides of the dispute in an effort to calm the situation and find a solution to the problems.”
