Families on an estate in Northamptonshire are being asked to do their own detective work to combat crime on their streets. The police are giving out 400 free CCTV cameras for people to watch and record what's going on in their neighbourhood. Officers say it will help to reduce crime and make people feel safer in their homes. But some campaigners insist it's encroaching on people's privacy.Read more: watch the news item too (after adverts on Anglian news website .... http://www.itv.com/anglia/p-cctv60094/

There will always be people who complain about something. You're already on CCTV all the time in England, what's a few more cameras? Or would you rather have the violence?

Also, for the people who are having problems with the police telling them they can't have CCTV, now you can point out that the police are GIVING THEM AWAY because people use them to gather evidence.

Thanks for posting the story Omega :D

Shame I can't get the ITV player to work on my Mac :(

I noticed this story recently, although the print version in the "Evening Telegraph" mentioned 800 CCTV cameras being distributed.

Delightfully ironic that they were purchased by police using the recovered proceeds of crime
