People power is returning to a Leeds community as residents bid to oust a second violent trouble-maker from his home.
The tenant in Highbury Place, Meanwood, was only given a final warning by Leeds City Council on November 20, despite a nine-month campaign of abuse and antisocial behaviour during which time he was arrested at least twice.
Last week police were after reports of a fight outside the man's home.
Now, a group of residents are urging Leeds City Council's West North West Homes to finally restore tranquillity to Highbury Place, with a petition and a public meeting calling for the troublesome tenant to be evicted.
Graeme Garvey, who has kept a nuisance diary and allowed us to print the extracts, right, said: "I was told in September that this tenant was on his last warning. Now, we find out he actually received his last warning on November 20.
"We feel like we've been lied to by the council. This tenant has caused nothing but trouble and it's making life hell for everyone else. On some occasions, people have been scared to leave their houses because he's having fights in the street.
"It's unbelievable that he's got away with it for so long. If the council has deceived us, they should move him elsewhere."
As reported in the YEP in July, the residents of Highbury Place have already banded together to oust a violent drug addict.
They were subjected to foul and abusive language and threatened with a knife, while the man was even seen running naked in the street. He was eventually evicted by his letting agent following a community meeting.
Now, the residents are having to put up with fighting and urinating in the street, loud music, swearing and criminal damage from the latest problem tenant, who has not been evicted despite a catalogue of complaints.
The occupant served a jail sentence in September – providing the first month of peace for the residents since March.
A spokesman for West North West Homes Leeds said: "We are currently investigating this case and are unable to discuss individual details.
"Antisocial behaviour is a major concern to our customers and we would reassure all of our tenants that once a complaint is received it is investigated robustly and fully."
Insp Simon Jessup, of the North West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team, added: "It is totally unacceptable for people to behave in a way that impacts on their neighbours' quality of life.
"We have attended a number of incidents linked to particular addresses in Highbury Place and we are in regular contact with residents there.
"We will be closely monitoring the situation and working alongside housing staff to take firm action where the evidence permits."
