Neighbours fear ‘rise’ in arson in Bury (http://www.burytimes.co.uk/news/4698021.Neighbours_fear____rise____in_arson_in_Bur y/)

A CANNABIS farm was discovered after a suspected arson attack on a house in Bury.
Firefighters were called to the blaze in Connaught Street, at 4am on Tuesday after neighbours were woken by smoke.

When they arrived, the house was well alight and neighbours thought a man and his dog could be stuck inside.

Six firefighters were sent inside to search the property, but no one was inside.
When the flames were extinguished, they discovered 65 plants and sophisticated equipment in an upstairs bedroom.

Neighbours evacuated their homes (http://www.burytimes.co.uk/homes), went to a house across the road and made cups of tea for the firefighters.

They spoke of their shock at the cannabis farm discovery.

One said: “I can’t believe it. I had absolutely no idea — that has really shocked me.

“The man who lives there seemed really nice, he would say hello when he was walking his dog. But I am thinking about moving out of this street because things keep happening.”

In June, a house on the same road was set alight in a suspected petrol bomb attack.
The cause of the latest fire, which started in the lounge and gutted the property, is believed to be deliberate.

Another neighbour added: “I am really surprised about the drugs.

“I was really scared when I saw the flames. I got my family out of the house as quickly as I could and called 999.”

Steve Wilcock, watch commander at Bury fire station said: “This was a ferocious fire and it was lucky that there was no-one inside.

“Once the fire was out, we discovered one of the bedrooms was full of cannabis plants, along with equipment such as heaters and fans.

“The neighbours were evacuated and brought us cups of tea which we were grateful for.”

A police spokesman said that the occupant of the house had not yet been traced and inquiries were ongoing.
