A CURFEW has been slapped on the chiming bells at one of Scotland's oldest churches after a ding-dong over noise.

I don't know how I feel about this one actually  .
The church has been there for a long time, the "plush" properties only came on the scene very recently. Did the purchasers not think about whether the big bells in the nearby church would ring?
OK, noise nuisance is noise nuisance, but I feel in this case that the bells should be allowed to ring.
We have about seven churches ringing their bells near us and they do it all through the night. None of them have the right time, so the bells, the bells are always a'tolling! :)

No one can say that Church of Scotland is as menacing to society as your typical NFH, but to those living nearby, the noise is every bit as disruptive:
The new homeowners should have perhaps done some research before moving there, since the church has been there since 1398! It seems that it would be hard not to notice bells ringing every 15 minutes from 6:00 AM to midnight, unless it was something recently implemented.
If I were moving to a new home, I would take notice of any nearby churches as much as more obvious noise sources. I once had the displeasure many years ago of renting a house across the street from a huge church with electronic bells. The church was there before I was, and the landlord even joked about the noise before I moved in. About a year later, we moved on, lesson learned.
In the mind, the bell sounds became something like my Ice cream truck from Hell (http://richardsfault.filesbox.com/Sounds%20of%20the%20cul-de-sac/Ice%20cream%20truck%20from%20Hell) recordings!
I remember timing trips so as to avoid them when at all possible. The schedule was not nearly as persistent as the Scottish church, but, dare I say it, Hellish!

Absolutely RF, there are so many different sources of noise in society now...........from Ice Cream Vans as you mention [a topic myself I've often ranted about which I find very annoying :D], Churches, Shops nearby, nightclubs, pubs, communities, NFH, traffic/'boom cars', etc, etc, etc, the list goes on and on... :o
