POLICE will be using sound measuring equipment to catch out drivers with pumping sound systems or ultra-fat exhausts — or both.
Devon and Cornwall Police has given each of its road policing teams sound meters, which a spokesman said were "a new tool to be used in conjunction with other educational and enforcement measures, including speed detection devices to tackle anti-social driving."
The spokesman said a number of officers had been trained to use the meters, and the first ticket was issued on May 27 in Newton Abbot when a vehicle was found to be over the acceptable noise level.
Police say "anti-social driving", including excessive noise from vehicles, is a significant concern in many neighbourhoods.
The police said vehicle noise levels should be between 82 and 89 decibels maximum at a certain rev range. In comparison, background noise is between 50 and 60 decibels. Every 10 decibel increase is perceived as a doubling in sound level.

Maybe they'll move on to noisy parkers, next.
