The Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week. :(
All mobile phone numbers including those belonging to children will be open to cold calling 118 say they wont but the directory is open to abuse. :(

This is not a joke :( if you read the small print you will see that you can go ex directory and not be included in 118's up and coming mobile phone directory.
I wouldnt want my nfh to have my number

To remove your number go here and click on faq's you can then elect to go ex directory.

looked at this and it is a bit of a worry but to go ex directory you have be entered onto their site which is even more of a worry because if they didn't already have your number they will now!

Personally I think before every one dashes out to make their number ex directory that they should book mark the site and wait and see if they are contacted then act.

Thanks for that P24. I had seen a news item about this and am appalled  I am very choosy who I disclose my mobile number to and I think it should be up to the owner of the phone to choose who has it

The news item mentioned you could go ex directory but I didn't catch how to go about it, so many thanks for the link - I have just made myself ex directory - I am not chancing it & waiting to see what happens

I can see being ex directory will be very valuable in certain occupations too, teaching particularly springs to mind

Thanks P24

I have just gone through the process to be made ex-directory. You are only asked for the number, not your name; so unless they have your name from somewhere else, they cannot connect the number to you. Hope that makes sense.

I went on my site to have my number removed, but when I did this it came up with the message that my number had now been "added" to their ex-directory list. Why are they storing these numbers from people who want nothing to with this service? Worrying as I am sure those listings will be sold on to other companies at some stage!

If someone calls this directory service they don't put the person through to you directly, or give them your number until you have agreed to that, apparently they phone or text you, (like the phone operator used to for reverse charge calls) and ask if you will accept the person's call, or so it was explained on BBC2's "Working Lunch" programme.
I think the directory people said they currently had something like 12 million of the 48 million mobile numbers in this country but I may not have remembered the numbers totally accurately.
BTW no one contacting the programme was remotely impressed with the idea of their number being available for people to give out to anyone that they had not chosen to give it out to themselves.
So for now I think I'll leave it in case they don't have my number and I'll go ex direct as soon as they ever contact me for permission to pass my number on, which they will not get!!

Which is precisely why I didn't register my number for not being included

I think, fredblog and Jillytb, that you are worrying unnecessarily here.

When you register your number as ex-directory you are NOT asked for your name, just the number, so there is nothing to link you to that number. They then put your number (but not your name, because they don't have it) in a list of those that are ex-directory. Should your mobile phone company (or anyone else) pass on your name AND phone number to this service, and they are subsequently asked for your number by an enquirer, as they already have your number flagged as ex-directory, you should be safe from intrusion.

Of course they have to keep a list of ex-directory numbers - how else are they to remember that you want to be ex-directory??!! A list of numbers without names isn't worth paying money for. An aggressive sales company can just as easily write a computer programme to systematically work through all the possible mobile phone numbers in a cyclical manner for their cold callers to use - they do that now:mad:

Well, that's my understanding of it anyway !

Hello,
My understanding is that they possibly have our numbers already having purchased them from the large phone companies such as O2, Carphone Warehouse etc so I thought that by asking to be "removed" it would be actually removed from their listing that they have - they now have over 4 million numbers, am guessing that mine might have been amongst them, now that I have gone on line they definitely have it. It will be interesting to see how successful this company is and how their service will evolve, I think this is just stage one of their exercise.

Hi Jillytb. The problem is, if they simply remove it completely from their records, how are they to know that you want to be ex-directory should they get your number from another source? They HAVE to have the actual number flagged as ex-directory so that they can tell any enquirer.

I see on tonights news that due to the very high volumes of people requesting their mobile numbers are not on the mobile directory, that the company have had to suspend the service :D
