View Full Version : I've got a virus
Being a 100% technophobe, I don't know the best way to deal with it
I have Googled it and a couple of sites claim to have a downloadable fixing tool but I don't know if they are genuine sites or not or whether I would just make things worse
Has anyone any experience of getting rid of the following and/or recommend a genuine site that has removal tool thingies?:rolleyes:
We have Norton anti virus but it still got through
The messages come up as follows -
W32.SillyFDC.BAZ found - this is a worm that spreads by copying itself to removable drives and steals info
and
W32.Pavsee.C found - this is a virus that infects .exe and .com files on mapped drives from C to F
:shout:Help!
Sorry hun :friends:no idea, I got one once and had to re-format the whole computer took me 2 days to sort it out. Have you tried running your anti virus thing on your computer I think that may track it down and get rid of it, other than that I am clueless:(
Oh dear!
Whilst i dont know much about technology, when my McCaffee scans and checks for virus's etc, if it finds something it quarintines it and asks me if i want to delete it. Also it gives you the option to send it to the McCaffee labs for them to analyise??!!!!
Like Isis says, try running a full scan and see if Norton will quarantine it and allow you to delete it.
Thanks Isis and Olivia :)
Yes we have done that,Isis and it appeared to get rid of 'tracking cookies????' and other things - we must have had a whole load of stuff come in and infect it at the same time
It is now coming up with this one -
Trojan.Mdropper.Ac Trojan found -
this is a Trojan horse that may exploit the Microsoft Exel Unspecified remote Code Execution Vulnerability {BID 33870} It may also attempt to download files on the compromised computer
 it may just as well be in a foreign language as it means nothing to me at all :(
EDIT: It gives the option to block - BUT it is NOT Nortons message - it is called Personal Assistant which we have never signed up for. When we clicked 'block' it wants all our details etc!!!!! We think that it is possibly all part of it and it is after our credit card details etc etc but we aren't certain
Thanks Isis and Olivia :)

I think a tracking cookie is where you have vistied a web site and web site give you cookies, which are normally good, this one what I think it does it let that web site know when you are on line. You can delete all cookies by doing:
Go into Control Panel (click on the start button), go it internet options, on my computer it says browsing history, Delete files, history, cookies and all saved passwords click the delet button. I am runnin Windows XP so it may be set out a little different for you, but find control panel and then internet options anddig around there.
A trojan is well out of my range, I wish i was at work, they would know what to do, hang on I give my friend a call, will be back
Edit she is on the phone I will keep trying:
She says
Go to intenet explore and google search for cue for Torjan.mdropper etc ..... Google should then tell you what is available to get rid of it!
good luck Sp
I'd suggest you go here: http://malwarebytes.org/ and d/l the free version of malwarebytes, excellent little program, run it at it should delete any nasties. Also download Spybot from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and again run it. That should help remove some nasties.
Sometimes you can delete a virus but it reinstalls itself when you restart your pc, you will need to turn off your system restore (you will loose all your restore points, sadly) while you give it a thorough scan for nasties, then swich system restore back on...hopefully this will fix the problem!
Oh and get rid of Norton, it slows your computer down something chronic! I use an antivirus called Bitdefender and it is excellent, rarely have any trouble with nasties! :
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/2009/futurenow/uk/products.html?s_kwcid=TC|5783|bitdefender||S||3117 152660 (http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/2009/futurenow/uk/products.html?s_kwcid=TC%7C5783%7Cbitdefender%7C%7 CS%7C%7C3117152660)
Let me know if you have any luck getting rid of your nasties, good luck!
Thank you very very much everyone :)
Will take a look at that Boolaa :D
It is now coming up with another one
W32.Ackanta.B@mm -this is a mass mailing worm that gathers email addresses from the compromised computer & spreads itself by copying itself to removable drives and shared folders.
Flipping heck
Often when you get a virus/trojan it 'opens the door' to other assorted nasties, so try and clean it asap!
Hi Sp how ****** annoying to receive these
My son rang me the other night to say he had a Trojan that had come down onto his computer, so he didn't open it as he didn't recognise it. He googled it too and that explained what to do.
I agree with Boolaa get rid of Norton it sometimes creates more problems than other anti virus programmes. At the moment my computer man installed "Kaspersky" http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/kis25orkav30?THRU&reseller=43052&gclid=CKjsvL_piZsCFUYA4woduTctpQ which I am finding so much better than any other I have.
Hope you can get it sorted ;)

it sounds more like spyware that is tricking you into thinking you have a virus to make you download its own software. do as boolaa said and download and run malwarebytes (http://malwarebytes.org/)and also superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html). run them both . if that doesnt get rid of it then get asquared hijack free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/), run it and then let me know what it says is on your system ;)
and also get rid of norton, it's rubbish, intrusive and causes more problems than it's worth

Another really good program is Avast it is free for regular households pay only for big business (reg householders are considered beta testers) this was the only program that coud get rid of a trojan horse I picked up somewhere (GD royal casino:mad:) this program takes care of everything, updates many times a day and tells you if a site has any malware before you even go there AWESOME in my book and def worth a try!
I agree that Avast is good :) If you do a lot of web searching, download McAfee Site Advisor: http://www.siteadvisor.com/ it will tell you on the search result if a website is to be trusted or not (green tick for good, red cross for bad!) so it can help alley fears that the site you are about to click on is dodgy or not.
Superantispyware as Bonkers suggested is also good :)
I think the key to a virus free pc is to use a combination of products you trust and check for nasties regularly :)
I have McCaffee boolaa and it is very good, never had any probs (touch wood), sp when we had a virus at work about 8 months ago, on my pc unfort :-(, it came up with the personal asst and me being an idiot clicked 'ok' and it cream crackered the pc and everone elses on the network (ooops!) Basically it stopped the virus protection alltogether and wouldn't let the I.T guy install new protection, including norton.....
Hope you get it sorted.

exactly
i use AVG and have malwarebytes, superantispyware and cleanup on mine. if malwarebytes doesnt get rid of everything then superantispyware will ;). those programs are the first things i get if i ever have to format the pc, i wouldnt be without them.

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=SKMXDTKJBTVISBYWWYP
this is a fairly good site too,,it checks ports etc to see just how secure you are
Thank you very, very much to everyone who offered help and advice :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:
The desk top pc is now fit and healthy again :D The malware worked wonders and got rid of the virus & the trojan & the worm without any problems at all :D
The 'Personal Assistant' that popped up that I mentioned was indeed part of the problem and showed up as 'rogue personal assistant' which was after our personal details
We have now started downloading Malware onto all the laptops in the house
The desktop is about 9 months old,my laptop 5 months old, and 2 others in the house are even newer and all have Norton on at the moment. We used Norton with all our previous PC/laptops too and never had a problem with it before. The only problem we have ever had at all was about 5 years ago and that was when we changed to Norton  But, I have listened to you all and will look into changing Norton to something else.
I think some of our computers are on a subscription with Norton which has a couple more months to run. Do we need to delete Norton before using a new anti virus package or can I just use something else and let Norton expire in a couple of months???
I told you I was a technophobe :D
Thanks again, you lot are GOOD ;):D:clap2:

 I have come in late on this one - i had a horrid problem with a virus last year and ended up having to take the pc to a shop and we had the whole hard drive wiped.
now i have avast on my pc and the malware thingy BM mentioned and we have been trouble free since, although i have to say the pc has not been the same since, much slower...
Im glad you got it sorted out sp :)
That's what we thought we were going to have to do too, Annabel. I am so glad it worked out - though we still need to download some of the things mentioned :)
My poor husband was tearing his hair out as he needed to use it all day & night - it is his busiest time of year work wise ;) Oh, and of course, it was all MY fault :rolleyes:
If you do decide to remove the Norton (and I would!) it's a pain to get rid of and often leaves bits of itself behind in your pc, you should download a Norton removal tool and run it to get rid of it entirely :http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 Then you can install your new antivirus and hopefully that's that!
Glad to hear that you are now sorted SP, wow they are some very good computer bods out there, I have really not got a clue what they are talking about, but glad to hear all is fine now. :)
Thanks for that Boolaa :D

Yes Isis, I knew there were some members who know their stuff - unlike me :rolleyes:
