View Full Version : G20 Protests
Well so far so good, it is very quiet up here, although I am on the edge of the City.
No way was I going to work in jeans today, stuff the protestors, I wear what I want to wear into the office.
Fingers crossed for a quiet day!

Isis, I am sure you will be alright, I reckon there will be so much security it will snuff out the protestors.
These people may have a very legitimate reason to protest but there is no excuse for violence and damage, in fact it does nothng for their arguments if they deliberately set out to cause trouble.
I think it is very wrong to say to people they cant go to meetings and need to dress down to avoid trouble, we should never give in to this kind of behaviour.
I am there with you in spirit me duck!
Popped out and saw halicopter hovering near to the Lloyds Building/Liverpool Street, it was actually quite amazing it was just static, probably press helicopter, also heard/can hear some Police sirens, oh hum another day in la la land then.

I am jealous of you working down there! any jobs going in your place?
Why Annabel, its horrid today.
Mind you when the sun is out I have my lunch right by the River Thames and sit and watch the boats going up and down, nice one. Sometimes you can see them raise Tower Bridge as well, well at least the traffic jam anyway

I love the City and Canary Wharf, I ask myself nearly every day why I dont work up in town, instead of a tiny advisory firm in hertfordshire, I dont care about the cr appy travelling, i am sure i would cope if i knew i was getting paid £50k+ a year instead of much much less than that!
i am such a 'bright lights big city' person, i am like a moth to a flame! i even like the cr appy dumpy bits like round aldgate - its so awful there, like time forgot it, but i still find it fascinating!
They have just shut London Bridge, looks like they are coming across London Bridge, thats the next bridge along from me, have stopped all buses now crossing London Bridge.
I know what you mean Annabel, in fact I was talking to another one of my colleagues the other day, and she knows that area "like the back of her hand" and I used to go to the workrooms with my Dad in the 60s/70s and we were talking about all the old places, probably gone now, except they still have the church. It was bombed in WW2 and lots of people lost their lives, and what they did they mapped the out line of church out with flat paving slabs as a memorial, and its still there.
11:27 - loads of sirens going off now!:o

Isis, I got this for you:
Dont panic!
The police seem to have barcaded Liverpool Street and there appears to be trouble brewing there now, also at the Bank of England. There is no one up here I have never seen the streets so empty, except after the July bombings. Its weird.

The police have secured it, by the looks of things.
how will you get home, isis?
Well one year they did decide to try and stop commuters getting home, big mistake on their part, we just barged them out of the way, no one stops me getting home to "my girl".
Probably by the time I leave it will be quieter. So no trouble fingers crossed, but you never know they may decide to shut the office early  as there is hardly anyone up here.
Have just received this from my mate "holed up at Liverpool street"
Also we have some protestors making they way down here
I hope it stays quiet and problem free for you :)

a large crowd but they all look fairly cheerful and not like they are about to tear down the buildings. a lot of them seem to be looking up at something...
is your friend feeling anxious?
A little I think, but the trouble is its who she works with, some of these people are well, I don't know what to call them.
Do you recall that the Stock Exchange got badly trashed one year, why, because the traders were either "mooning" at the protestors out of their windows and some of them went down stairs and were egging them on to get into the building, cause the traders wanted a "ruck" with them.
Therein lies the problem.

Yeah I get it, people can be such prats:dry:
Hope you get home with no problesm, I think its a good idea if you do leave early
Still here, :D they have them pinned up in Threadneedle Street, this is not a good move on the Police's part, this could make the situation worse as the protesters will get frustrated.
Trouble is police cannot let them go on the "rampage" either, they are sort of stuck between the "devil and the deep blue sea" have just heard that the Bank Of England building has had grafetti daubed on it.
Also saw eariler that Russel Brand has turned up.
14:22
Have just heard its started to turn violent up at Threadneedle, this is not good.
I heard that they have damaged the Bank of England too. Why can't they just leave all the vandalism out of it? It does no good at all to their cause :( .
And why is it in London again? Can't they just clear off to the desert somewhere??
Hope you got home to ''your girl'' ok Isis (you made me laugh when you said nobody will stop you getting home to her!! :notworthy:   )
I remember when the conference was up here at Gleneagles. Protesters got nowher near it, so Ediburgh was a hotspot.
The sunday demo was fine, realy good natured as it was the 'make poverty history' march. Lots of church types there. The Monday one was horrendous. Prices Stret Gardens was completely destroyed and Children who were out shopping with their parent during the hols were crying with fear. The anarchists were throwing the plants and benches around. But hey, as one quoted today' isn't this a free country?'
Yeah mate, not just for the anarchists though. I too have a right to walk about in safety without some idiot wrecking my capital. Where are our rights to walk about freely. Free country when people have to dress down to get to work safely?
sorry rant over

you're right though rb! absolutely agree with you.
I got home to "my girl" fine, she was pleased to see me
Though a couple of work colleagues had trouble as they had/have closed Liverpool Street, itself, so could not gain access to the station, though did hear that they got through in the end, one of them lives in Saxmundon (not sure of spelling) she commutes everyday:eek:, and she had 3 strokes by the time she was 30  so she found it hard going as she has trouble walking, but me I was fine no poblems.
Heard though its our turn tomorrow, oh dear, as I don't think they will get anywhere near the Excel Centre, so could prove to be tricky as we are sort of sandwiched between the city and docklands, oh hum.
Yes RB I agree with you as well hun.
Mazza, nothing stops me getting home to "my girl" she is very important not only to me but Hubby as well, and now more so as she is not well, she is very old now, and has to have her drugs, so nothing and nobody will stop me. They have been warned. Isis on a rampage.

:lol: you are so funny sometimes isis!
glad you got home with no problems and fingers crossed tomorrow people will have lost interest!
Okay another day in la la land, nothing much to report v quiet where I am, lots of police and police vans round here, but nothing else, although have heard a rumor that there is supposed to be a march coming down Tower Bridge, right past where I work, we shall see. Refused once again to "dress down".
Also heard another rumor that some of the Bankers yesterday were leaning out of their windows waving £10 notes at the protestors. Nice!
Should be here between 11 and 11:30am

maybe they will be at the ExCel, Isis, but I reckon yesterday was the day for the protest and it will fizzle out now.
Well while I was at lunch the protestors arrived, Tower Bridge was closed for a while and I could see Green Flags and hear lots of shouting and banging of a drum, and that was it.
After about 20 mins it was business as usual, just heard though that "Spiderman" has climbed the outside of the Lloyds Building.
Update 15:17
Violence has just broken out at the Bank of England again, all roads in the area now closed.
