View Full Version : Missing Cat
I don't know if anyone can help us, but my colleague at work, has lost her cat,:( it went missing on Sunday evening and has not been seen since, she has asked around where she lives and also phone her Vet, RSPCA and Council.
I have suggested she try the vets a little further out from where she lives and also the rescue centres near where she lives.
She is also preparing posters to put up around her area.
Any other ideas would be most gratefully received. Thanks

is the cat neutered? is it microchipped?
1. Posters, Posters, Posters with picture and details with contact number.....hand out to neighbours and anyone you see. Put up in local shops, pubs and supermarkets. Stick to all local lamp posts. (If it rains go and collect them and replace however it's best to put posters in plastic wallets so if it rains they don't go all soggy - the neighbours and council don’t mind you putting them up so much that way). Also put one in your and friends cars - it amazing how many people see them this way. Make smaller flyers and push through every letterbox on your streets and the surrounding area. It is a good idea to offer a reward … of course this doesn’t have to be money … a box of cho-colates or a bunch of flowers is just as good.
2. Knock on doors and ask neighbours to check their sheds and garages WHILE YOU WAIT … it's surprising how many people say they will check but as soon as the door is closed they forget. Knock on 10 doors either side of your house on both sides of the street.
3. Register him lost at all vets/catteries/rescue homes within a 20mile radius.
4. Leave food out and a toy of his
5. Leave out an unwashed item of your clothing
6. Put the contents of your hoover bag on your garden - it’s full of smells that they will recognise and if doesn’t bring him directly to your door will at least hopefully keep him in the area. Alternatively if you have a litter tray that has used put some of the used litter on the garden as this will have familiar smells in it.
7. Contact the local fire brigade and see if they have had to rescue any stuck cats
8. Ask the local children to look - they are great for knowing all the local hidey-holes and love helping. Also have a word with your local post-person and milk man if there is one that delivers in your area. Also try and enlist the help of people walking dogs as they tend to go “off road” in the fields and parks.
9. Ask the local radio station to announce he’s missing and give out a contact number
10. Put an advert in the local paper
11. Contact your local environmental services dept (bin men) they keep a log of all animals picked on the roadside ... I know this is not a pleasant call to make and hopefully it will come back as negative.
12. Go out after dark when it is quieter with a friend / partner and walk round the local area gently calling every so often (give him a chance to answer you). Keep talking as you walk round that way if he is in the area he will hear you.
13. When you talk to vets and rescues, ask them about any known local feral colonies and where they are based. If Kitty has been missing for more than a few days s/he might have wandered further afield and might be “hanging round” near a colony for security (safety in numbers) and company. If vets/rescues know locations of colonies, these might be useful to get some ideas of where to start looking.
14. If you have Pet Insurance check your policy to see if they will assist with advertising costs or reward costs for a lost cat. Some policies cover as much as £1000 of local advertising and upto £500 reward.
Finally have a look at these other sites - they are all EXCELLENT

yeah, make sure you let us know if it turns up
Hi
When my young cat went missing ( suspect nfh but thats another story ) we put posted flyers through everyones house in our neighbour hood in case he was hiding in sheds etc ,rang round vets and visited rspca and even council offices in case the worse had happened , we then put an advert in our local paper and thank goodness that brought him back to us ..... a lady a good mile away ( maybe a bit more ) found him near her home and took him in :)
I was told though ( not sure if true or not ) it is better to visit the rescue centres if possible than just ringing up , as some cats have be known to be there but they didnt realise it!!
My sisters cat , hardly goes out , he is very nervous and when he did wasnt out long , he went missing and was found only across the street from her home hiding in an alley way too scared to come home
I hope her cat turns up , let us know how she gets on

that's why it's important to have your pets microchipped, strays are always scanned as soon as they are taken to vets and rescue centres
No news today I am afraid, still missing.

the first call i make is to the council cleaning dept, that way i have my mind put at ease that they havent been pick up from the roadside.
what has your friend done so far Isis? and you didnt say whether it had been neutered or not. if it hasnt then you can amost guarentee that it's off looking for nookie. it is kitten season after all.
Hiya BM
The cat is neuted, he is also very timid.
She has been on to the council, Tuesday, yesterday and today and the cleaning dept to see if they removed any cats. But no.
She has called the RSPAC, she has called her vet, plus she called vets in her area, she has rung her local animal sanctury, she has been calling them every day also she has informed the police, not that they can do anything, but worth a try, she has knocked on doors in her road, and eveyone has opened their garages and also sheds and out buildings, with her viewing them, what nice people she lives with, she has checked the local pit 3 times, and also the main road at the back of her house, she has been out every night with torch and so have her neighbours. They are keeping an eye out dung the day as well as they move around the area, as they know him as well. Also she looked at the info which you kindly gave her.
She is off tomorow to start again, and put up posters around her area. Her Hubby is convienced that the cat has been run over but as said above the council have said no. She puts a dish of his favourite food out every day.
I hope she finds him soon. :(

what a coinsidence a cat appeared at ours a week ago. Our cat died 3 months back and this young female black cat was in my parents garden eating crisps? last week. it had a heathy appetite since and is a lovely cat. We reported it to police and asked about let places know but no joy. Sometimes you a get attached to cats too. Now we have had it week with no joy of whose it is we would find it hard to let go now. Think it sonly 6 months old at most.
Good luck in finding your cat, It must be awful. We dont know where this came from she is obvioulsy a house cat as doesnt go out, had a colar but no address. Kept wailing and following us for a day then had no choice but to take it in. Just got attached to us followed my mum in her house.
We think it was either lost, or was dumped here in hope of it being taken in. Its awful if that is it as it such a timid affection cat and very calm and loving.
Who knows what will happen if its here to long i expect it wont want to leave as already acts as if its always lived here.
I know it isnt waht you want to hear, really hope it turns up, its well worth trying further afield as cats can wander quite far i saw my old cat a mile away from our house once!!
I fear it may of been taken in and i worry how common is this? cats to just wander off and find new homes? A cat we had done this once. Dissapeared after being let out for first few times turne dup in a house in next street as we saw it on fence and then neighbour saw us and it was so settled there as was with them longer than us so they kept it in the end, plus our othe cat proberly got used to being on it sown as was 3 months later it turned up.
We will have to take it to vets to check for achip, is it free? to do so we dont want to put it in a cattery would rather keep it, than it be in one of them but really should be checked just incase.
regards steve, cant suggest more than whats already been mentioned

it is free to have a cat scanned at the vets, just takes seconds . it's also worth having a look at the links on the first page of this thread, it's more than likely that somebody is frantically looking for their pet.
Such a shame Isis, I hope the cat does turn up. There's still hope - cats are a law unto themselves! :clover: .

that's quite true. i believe my latest (number 13) was dumped. he'd obviously come from a good home but despite my efforts to find out where he came from nobody came forward :(
their loss, he's mine now
Sorry everyone Cat is still missing. :( Fearing the worst now:(
Aw that's just horrible. I wonder what on earth happened? That's the worst isn't it? The not knowing... .

a week is an awfully long time when you are the one looking but in terms of cats it's not long at all. your friend shouldnt give up. she should go door knocking again and print leaflets for the houses where nobody is in.
has she tried all of those links i posted?
Hiya BM
No she has not tried all of them yet. She does not have internet at home and she took a copy home with her and left it there today  plus we have been v busy here as well.
She has sprinked the contents of her vacume cleaner around her garden and also left out the cat litter try, empty but she did not wash it. She has also posted more leaflets through peoples doors and also posted them on lamp post as well. Did you get my pm?
Bonkers Mad!!!

yep, i got the PM. i've posted the details on the cat forum ;)
Thanks BM you are a "star".

Is there any building work going on nearby? I ask because last night I had to climb up two floors of scaffolding on the building site next door (at 11pm!) to rescue my calico cat who had somehow got herself up there (heaven only knows how) and couldn't get back down. There are also gaps under the floor in the half-finished building and at first I feared she had gone under there. Cats are naturally nosey creatures and will often get themselves into all sorts of situations. Your friend shouldn't give up hope.
No piptiddlepip my colleague, whos cat it is, she said there is no building work going on around her. The cat is still missing, been over a week now. :(
I cant remember exactly but i think when our cat was "lost" it was over a week maybe 2 before we got him back so dont give up hope yet.
Just a thought but our cat is absolutely barmy about boxes he loves sitting in them or scratching them  have their been any deliveries or something like that nearby where the cat could become a stow away:huh:
keeping fingers crossed for you friend
Yes, don't give up hope. Whe I was a kid our cat went missing for about two weeks, maybe more. He did turn up eventually in a poor state. We wondered if he had been trapped somewhere  .
Fingers crossed everyone, :D my colleague had a call last night from a woman who says that she thinks that she is feeding her cat. The women said that if she sees him again she will try and get him into her house, he has made friends with this women kids, so she will ring, and then my colleague's hubby can go and have a look.
Fingers crossed everyone.

Oh wow, I'm so pleased to hear that. I really hope its him! I would go spare if one of my two disappeared, they are like children to me.
Hoping that it is a positive sighting. :clover:
No news today, hopefully will have some tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
Any more news yet? I hope it was her cat :)
Hiya
No I am sorry no news, nothing zilch. Cat is still missing. :( Just that one phone call, never know might be a crank of something, you what some people can be like.
:o I never thought it could be a crank call. Some people are sickos :frown:
False alarm not her cat at all, so he is still missing.
Aw no , whatever could have heppened to the cat? :( .

Sometimes if injured they go off to die alone. It's very sad and I hope like mad that's not what's happened here, but it accounts for why some cats are just never found.
Well now she is not sure that it is not her cat, let me explain.
She went along to the address that this person gave her, turned out to be an empty house :o that is why we thought it may have been a hoax. So last night she went back again and knocked on the next door, it turns out this was the women who had reported seeing her cat. She had a pic of her cat and showed this women who said "oh no that is not the cat and anyway the women across the road has adopted it, it looks nothing like your pic" she is not so sure, so is going back again to see if she can see this cat for herself. Odd very odd.
Bonkers Mad!!!
07-04-09, 02:07 PM
i'd definitely go back. sounds like somebody has taken a shine to the cat and doesnt want to give it back. if it were me i'd go back to the lady and ask which house had adopted it and demond to see it. is the cat chipped? i cant remember if you told me whether it was. if it is and it is her cat then it'll be easy enough to prove that it's her cat.
hope she gets it sorted, the sooner the better. if the cat has settledin then she'll have to keepit in for a few weeks so that it doesnt wander off again.
No the cat is not micro chipped, but she does have the pic, and also she said she is going to put some leaflets through other peoples doors down this road.
She has already asked the women and the women became very evasive :o

sounds dodgy to me. she should take the pic and knock on every door, hopefully she'll get lucky.

Very strange indeed. I agree with Bonkers Mad...talking to some of the neighbours might turn something up. If she shows them the picture then everyone in that street is going to know she stole someone else's cat.
This thread has made me think I should get my two microchipped. They wear a collar but that can come off or be removed.
Bonkers Mad!!!
08-04-09, 08:51 AM
none of mine are chipped either pip. with 13 it would cost me a fortune to have them all done now. i'm extremely assertive when it comes to my cats though and theres no way anybody would get away with stealing one of them. i'd be prepared to do damage to anybody who tried
Just by way of an update the cat is still missing :(
Update
Well someone at the weekend contacted my colleague to say that thought they had her cat locked up in their car  so down she goes and yes it is her cat, but unfortunately, its gone a bit wild, so anyway she says to the women that she will go home and get her cat basket, the women says no you can borrow mine which she does. She manages to get her cat into this basket but then the basket collapses and the cat bits her fingers and hands to get away from her, so she ends up in Casualty and the cat has got away. She will not be in work until Thursday at the earliest, must have been a nasty bit.
I did not know that cats bit, I thought they just scratched.
 ouch !! Yes they bite ,scratch , and can be really really nasty when frightened like that :mellow:poor thing must of been terrified!
I hope your friends hand heals quickly
At least she knows it is alive and where abouts it is now
Mine was like it as a kitten ( the person who bred him nicknamed him killer ..... i should of known  )and he wasnt feral either lol many times i had to move the cat off the stairs because he had chased my lads up them and not let them back down:lol:
