View Full Version : Jewellery making
Does anyone else make jewellery? I could do with lots of hints and tips
I have only started this newest hobby recently and so am only doing very simple projects at the moment.
I love wearing jewellery but was having trouble finding things I like so thought I'd make my own. Each one is different - I never make two the same, and am busy making bracelets right now to give the ladies in my family as Christmas pressies.
At the moment I am keeping it simple and using a variety of beads and semi precious stones etc to make bracelets on jewellery elastic.I want to start making earrings next as I am a real earring fanatic :rolleyes:
I started by buying the beads and gems from proper bead shops and Hobbycraft, but have found some very good shops on ebay that sale the same things at a fraction of the price :)
I now have thousands of beads of all shapes, colours and sizes and it is very enjoyable making up all the individual designs.
I hope my friends and family like them

Hi Sp54,
I have tried many hobbies and jewelry was one of them i did start to make the different coloured bead based on a string of elastic but at the time years ago lol auction sites where not available so i gave up but it would be great to see what you have made and i am sure some one will be along with some good hints and tips
I dont have the patience to make jewlery and my figers are too fat :D but I admire anyone who does
My friend lent me her book "Start Beading" by Stephaine Burnham and I have found this book extremely useful.
Good Luck

video on pendant making...there is a website to visit....british website
It is just a pastime at the moment lettingo as I am just a beginner, though I have been asked to make a bracelet for my sons girlfriends sister and hubby has people where he works want to have a look too.
I am branching out a bit today :D So far I have only been making threaded beaded bracelets as they are the best place for a beginner to start, but I have now oedered some chain and other equipment to make bracelets from chain.
Yesterday I bought the bits I needed to make ear rings too as I havent tried these yet. I love earrings :rolleyes: but often have trouble finding the style or colour I want so thought I would give earring making a bash.
The other day I bought a turquoise coloured top and plan to make a bracelet to wear with it as I have some turquoise beads. I have just made my very first pair of earrings to match too
They are very simple in design being my first ever go at making them, and the picture is blurry  but here is my first ever home made pair of ear rings made from turquoise semi precious beads and tiny silver beads
Very, very hard on the eyes  so I am going to order a craft magnifying glass that you wear round the neck to kep both hands free.
Oh crikey, yet another hobby I am hooked on :doh:

Ive been thinking about having a bash at it - since getting my ears pierced Ive switched from a shoe obsession to an earring obsession!!
Off to look at ebay!
Sparrow I have avoided making earrings because I thought it would be hard but it is dead easy
You need a few basic things to get you started and the beads on ebay are cheap and come in all sizes :D
You will need headpins, fish hook earring wires, beads from 2mm up to about 10mm,and maybe a few 4mm jump rings. All those things are cheap. The most expensive things are the tools like round headed pliers and wire cutters but if you do a search you can even get them cheap.
Because my eyes are not as good as they were I have had to order a free standing illuminated magnifying glass but you wont need that I doubt :rolleyes:
I like being able to design my own things and make them to match outfits and knowing no one else will have them

Its all your fault sp!!! Ive bid on one lot and there are about three more that im watching!! My eldest loves making things - she once made me a beautiful rose quartz bracelet at Brownies for Mothers day a few years ago so she is going to have a go at it with me! I have also promised her she could have her ears pierced next year when she is 11
 Sorry Sparrow
Have a look at this - it shows you how to make a basic drop earring and they really are very easy!! :)

I am pretty sure you can Planet24.
I have certainly seen pins that are 'blank' so you can add your own things :)
