View Full Version : Slimming World - I've just joined
Hi I have just joined Slimming World as I need to lose 2 stone :( Most of my excess weight has been due to the 4.5 years of the harassment by my ex NFH and then the last 3 years being in the process of suing them for compensation. I suppose it's comfort eating, and also I have developed Fibromyalgia because of all this aggravation; which unfortunately means I cannot exercise very much.
Now the compo case is coming to an end (will post when its totally over, not good news tho!!!) I want to get my old self back again and as it's my 60th next summer and I am having a big party  I want to feel good. So on Monday I took that big step and walked through the doors of Slimming World :) I have done it before many years ago and lost in the region of 2 stone so I know it works.
Mr O is going to be eating what I eat (he is not going to the classes tho ;) and will still have his glass of wine!) so is taking charge of my food
I needed to write about it as that will make me carry on and persevere; is there anyone else out there who belongs to Slimming World and how are you finding it to cope? Perhaps we can share each others ups and downs with the diet and encourage each other too?
:eat: but not the wrong foods eh?!

Hi Omega
Im doing Weight Watchers (points plan) !! But wanted to say good luck to you!
I started mine in febuary as I had had loads of problems with pain in my leg as a result of trapping my siatic nerve about three years ago.
I had lost nearly two stone - i was really gradual with it at least a lb a week but some weeks more some weeks stayed the same. Then came the school holidays and various other things that happened in my life (some good some bad!) so Ive been "off the wagon" for a bit but Im weighed tonight and then back on it tomorrow morning.
Ive tried losing weight so many times but this time I am determined. Ive come so far since febuary - ive come down three dress sizes , have more self confidence and have had people comment that im losing weight!
I never ever want the pain i was in for all that time with my back and leg again so I will do it even if it takes me five years!!
Good luck Omega :)

Thanks Sparrow; well done for coming down three dress sizes that's great achievement
I tried weight watchers but when they weighed me their scales made me just under a stone heavier than when I was weighed on my doctors scales a few days earlier :o So after that I never went back
Good luck to you too Sparrow x
Hi Omega :D
Funny you should mention losing weight :rolleyes:
I started dieting last year on 1st September. I haven't joined a slimming club and am doing my own thing.
I am a comfort eater and during our NFH probs my weight just crept up and up and up :rolleyes: By last summer I had such bad back problems I could barely walk for longer than a few minutes before I was in agony.
So, I started dieting and exercising at home. I started off using an exercise bike and gradually moved on to fitness dvd's and used wrist and ankle weights too.
Yesterday I decided to 'dance the weight off' as i have not lost anything since July and desperately want to lose more for all my Christmas do's. So far today I have done 2 hours dancing and will do a bit more later
It's not easy but those of us trying to lose weight can help support you as we know what it's like
I have now lost just a few pounds over 4 stone and am almost back to what I was when NFH moved in and took control of my life  I have dropped 3-4 dress sizes depending on what the clothes are and where they are from :D
I have decided to go a bit further though and lose a bit more than I was then, and would like to get back to being a 10 - 12 one day again
I am just about a 14 at the moment :D
Lots and lots of luck to you and I will look forward to hearing how you get on ;)
:o wow sp you must have some will power to do it on "your own" so to speak - and to manage to lose that amount of weight :notworthy:
I just wish I could exercise, although my GP has referred me our local leisure centre so that means I get it half price to use the gym and swimming is free  Swimming is the best exercise for me, its just plucking up the courage to go on my own  I am hoping to join the "Aquatone" again soon. Did start at the leisure centre last May but when I broke my foot on my last hols I haven't been back.
As the referral only last 3 months my GP has given me a letter which confirms why I haven't been and they have agreed to extend my membership another 10 weeks :)
Doesn't it make you so angry  how the NFH can change your lifestyle & wellbeing so drastically, so that it affects the rest of your life ....... :(
I will keep you informed how I get on as I think by posting on here will give me the strength to keep at it ;)
Go for it omega good luck :)
Im sure we will all give you encouragment you need ;)
you will do great Omega as I know you have the will power and the fight in you :D

Hi Everybody,
ILL be honest heres my personally thoughts on these weigh********chers and slimming clubs is they are ok but some not all but some people do tend to get bored with the clubs after a while the constant telling you what you can eat and what you cant get up some people noses and it then becomes tedious but this is my personal view and they can cost a lot of money something you could save by slimming yourself..
I lost 3 stone by cutting down the meals and having a baked potato instead of chips i did find you can eat what you want but in smaller proportions and exercise every day by either walking, running or using exercise equipment..
But everybody different and it is want suits you in the end.
I would be very interested on how you go on omega please keep us all updated:)

Good luck with it Omega, I am also on a mission to lose weight and have been plugging away at it for most of this year, I am doing regular exercise and feel much fitter and stronger and my clothes are all a lot looser.
I did join slimming world a long time ago but i found its system a bit confusing, I am the kind of person who needs to know levels of calories for things to make sense so it wasnt for me, personally. but a lot of people had lost a good amount of weight so fingers crossed you will get the results you want.
Good luck Omega - we're all on your case now so you'll need to let us know how you are getting on!! (not much pressure then!!)
I am trying to lose weight too, so I really wish you luck with it!! :clover:
Thanks for all your support its appreciated ;)
Well today is day 4 and I am struggling with what to eat for dinner  I was gonna have a jacket potato but I hate it without butter or cheese  Hubby says I can have low fat vinaigrette but I don't like any of those sort of things :errrm: Trouble with me is that there are a lot of foods that I do not like but I can eat on this diet :( Oh and I absolutely hate the after taste of sweeteners and low calorie drinks :(
Still I suppose it can only get easier as it goes on  and I expect my food preferences will change :) My best friend was slimmer of the week this week at her meeting so I keep getting tips from her ;)

It does get easier Omega - you have to get your head in the right gear to think healthy all the time. These days the healthy stuff is much better than it used to be!
When I started I had sugar in my tea - now I have sweetex - hated it at first but now Im fine. And skimmed milk - i thought it would be like pouring water on my cereal  but now we are all on it! The kids still have full fat milk too though obviously.
Im still not very good with fruit - i eat loads of veg and salad but I still dont want to eat fruit like I should.
Am I right in thinking slimming world is the red and green days one?
it's funny how your taste buds change Omega :) I remember when i changed from full fat milk to skimmed or semi skimmed i thought I was being poisoned  Now I could never ever go back to full fat milk out of choice :)
I love jacket potatoes :D I found it really hard cutting out the butter & cheese in them but now I have it plain with either some prawns or a tin of tuna in spring water or brine and a huge salad in low fat dressing. I actually enjoy that more now too.
Persevere,O, it does get better - honest
PS. I haven't found a lower fat/calorie substitute I like for chocolate or wine yet though :rolleyes:
Yes sparrow it is the red and green ;)
I started on skimmed milk about a year ago, I found that my tea was becoming "greasy" with semi skimmed, now it actually tastes like tea! I even drink skimmed milk it tastes quite refreshing to me. Mr O drinks Earl Grey and says I should try that, maybe one day :)
You talking about chocolates sp I bought a box of Guylian Belgium chocs, some other chocolate cakes and also a box of Daim bars (as I needed euros in the change from £20.00 whilst camping out at Mahon airport last week!) now I am going to give the chocs as a prize for our raffle they have at our Alzheimers Branch :crybaby: As long as I don't win them back :hihi:
I am not a fruit lover but I have bought Conference pears and I peel them and slice them and eat them as snacks along with nectaries and plums!!! Oh dear all this healthy food

i can vouch for the fact the you can wean yourself off loading a baked potato with butter and cheese, I dont put any butter on at all if I am having something like tuna on top which i do mix with a teeny bit of mayonnaise - that does the trick
do you think you could forgo butter if you had something like baked beans on top, cost that has a bit of runny sauce so the potato isnt too dry?

I don't eat baked beans Annabel, but I suppose I could give it a try  I have already stopped having butter in sandwiches  Trouble is we did a big shop the day before I joined  Had some bad tuna once and that put me off but then again I will probably give that a try as well - as I am always being told "you don't know what it's like til you try it"
Tuna is great in a potato - moist enough to offset a dry potato but if you have salad as well it stops the dryness even more. It's one of my favourite meals now and I would still have it even if I wasn't trying to lose weight, and as you say it might be worth you giving it a try again, Omega.
I never feel hungry or deprived afterwards and it's really healthy so makes you pleased with yourself  :D
Hi omega,
Im not going to pretend i know all about slimming world because it confuses the hell out of me
My daughters have both been going for a while and i dont get the red /green days etc but they both still have cheese on their jacket potatoes its classed as their healthy b's (calcium) i think they forsake milk on that day though gosh its confusing

My mom used to enjoy having her potatoes with a little bit of butter, and she would mash them up and put some steamed veggies on top. She didn't like the veggies much, but they were made more palatable by the potato underneath.
:) Well I have had my first weigh-in (sound like a horse don't I :hihi:)
I have lost 2.5 lbs in 6 days; I am pleased with that because we have had to get rid of those naughties that I bought in our weekly shopping the day before I joined
I am quite happy with 1-2 lbs a week because if I keep it up I could lose in the region of 2 stone by next summer or maybe more who knows  But like so many other people I really deep down wanna lose it now
Well done omega thats really good ;)
:D Very well done Omega :D
1-2lbs a week is a good goal to aim at too :)
In a good month I can lose about half a stone ;) It's not easy, so I know how you feel
I am sure you can do it
:clap2: you go girl!! you have every right to be feeling pleased with yourself ;)
next summer you will be strutting your stuff in a gorgeous little kini

Well done Omega :) Thats a great start!

Good Luck Omega, I hope you manage to loose the weight you want to, failing that you can always follow my diet, I lost 3 stone and Hubby lost 1 stone, but now he has started to cheat, which of couse he can, and has put weight back on.
Don't forget to allow yourself a cheat every month, otherwise you will not be able to stick to it, it will become boring and you will get board as well, this is what the dietician told me.
I cannot eat wholemeal bread, if you are the same try the 50/50 its nice also Tesco Finest Range do some rolls that you can cook in the oven that have seeds on them, and again it was the dietician that told me about them, any bread with seed on it or in it is v good for you, also if you use butter/marg in a sandwich, try the Flora extra light and also use the sprayable olive oil when roasting or frying is 1 calorie per spray and again as the dietician told me stay away from ready meals they are really no good for you. Also you will find food that is low in fat will be high in sugar, and meals that are low in sugar will be high in fat, so watch out for that one. Don't forget your 5 portions of fruit and veg it sounds a lot, but it is not really that much, some days I can have 6 portions of veg in one sitting:o Also found the George Foreman Grilling Machine very handy as well.
Good luck and let me know how you are getting on.

Those 1 cal sprays are very good
I use them all the time now. They are fantastic for cooking a selection of veg. in. I cook a whole heap of different veg - like mushrooms/courgettes/leeks/tomatoes/peppers etc. add a bit of seasoning, a few herbs and you have a very filling, tasty pile of veg. Boiling or steaming veg alone can taste a bit bland IMO but using the 1 cal spray to cook up a variety of veg still keeps it very low in fat and calories but high in vitamins. It's good stuff :)
Thanks for the suggestions all welcome ;) I have just bought some of the one cal spray so fully intend to use that :eat: I now eat loadsa veg, fruit and have actually succumbed to Bran Flakes with a banana every morning - which actually seems helping my condition of IBS so that's gotta be a plus for me :)
For breakfast I have either some fruit with low fat natural yogurt or Weight Watchers bread [or Nimble] toasted, with a teaspoon of Weight Watchers jam on - no butter of course, but the toast and jam only comes to 150 cals :)
Lunch is something like soup with WW bread, or melba toasts with the extra light Philadelphia cheese and a piece of fruit.
Dinner is something like chicken or fish with salad or veg.:)
If you get fed up with toast, try Oatiflakes yum yum or porriage, that is just so good for you, the Oatiflakes have bran in them so that helps your digestive system, and the Wheatiflakes are nice as well, this is what I have for breakfast every day. Also I dont like skimmed milk, which I am supposed to have, so what I did was to have semi skimmed on cornflakes and in tea and coffee, but use skimmed milk for cooking eg for porriage, yorkshire puds and milke puddings etc as it does not make any difference to the taste. The dietician said that was fine. Also look fo extra light stuff, oh and don't forget tesco value as well, their salad cream is great and so is their brown pickle I have them as they are low in sugar, and cheap. You might find your food bill will go up a bit. :( Also try not to fry, bake or grill instead, I have fish portions, again Tesco value range and I just put some water in a dish with a cover and put them in the over and within 1/2 hr they are done. Good luck hun. xxx
ps I have a receipe for a low fat, low sugar fruit cake, if you want it let me know and I will post it on the cooking bit, if its not there already.
Hi Omega, well done on the weight loss so far - you are doing well!!
Sainsbury's do baking potatoes (I think they might be their 'Taste the Difference' ones) that they say have a naturally buttery/rich taste so you don't have to add butter to them when you eat them. I had a crack at them when they were recently on offer . I do admit I covered my tattie in beans and half fat cheese so I didn't notice the lack of butter or whether it tasted naturally buttery really!! But it might be worth checking them out!
I am terrible with the sweeteners too, I cannot abide any artificial sweeteners and I am convinced they can't be any good for you but I have noticed you can get sucralose which is apparently a naturally derived sweetener  .
Well all good intentions come to an end sometimes
I was doing ok I'd lost 1/2 stone then whilst in Kent last week I caught a viral infection that apparently is all over the country (and I thought my bug was special huh!) I was taken by Ambulance to hospital no nenana just a very bumpy ride  Gastro-enteritis :(
When I eventually got home here I weighed myself and had lost another 1/2 stone :jump: Unfortunately its not the proper way to lose weight so have had to stop going to SW as my weight would be false at the moment
So intend to go back after xmas as I am still on anti-sickness pills and a liquid/stodge diet :eat: as proper meals leave me feeling ill :(
Ah well a stone is good and I am pleased - but when I start eating properly I gotta try and eat sensibly to keep it off
Thanks for your all your support ;)

OMG Poor you :( Gastro-enteritis is alwful - it just leaves you so weak.
I caught it in hospital and had to have a drip put in through my tummy - dreadful and to top it all a male nurse to do the necessaries ...not nice.
Probably best to start back in the New Year - I think that's always a good time to start any kind of weight loss - guilt kicks in after all the Xmas fayre;)
Sorry you've been ill Omega :(
My family and other peeps around me are dropping like flies with either flu or the same thing you had :(
I am dieting for one more week then all the Christmas parties/meals start for me - a whole weekend of eating on the 13th Dec and the following weekend am out 3 nights in a row - so after next week I will call a halt to the dieting and start again in Jan too.
Bring on the mince pies :rolleyes:
