View Full Version : Injured sparrow - flip!

Yikes, I rescued a sparrow from the jaws of my *beeping* cat earlier and I really don't know what to do with it now!

I can't tell if it is a baby or an adult, so I have no idea how to look after it - at least an adult would eat seeds or worms i guess but a baby would be likely to have scrambled egg I think...but maybe when its daylight? Eeek I don't know! I doubt it will eat at the moment anyway  .

Anyway, I've put it in a box for safety and kept it in a quiet place inside at the moment so at least it's warm...I think.

No wildlife rescue centre round here (closed last year due to lack of funds :( ) so I'm really a bit stuck :help: :shout: !!!!

I doubt it will survive if I'm being realistic as it must have had a terrible shock and its leg is injured. Mind, the injury on its leg looks like it was caused by something that had been stuck on tight around it for a while as opposed to my evil cat. Otherwise, it seems pretty intact!

Oh well, here goes for another bird trauma for us! .

oe eck

if its a baby it will need you to dig up worms, smosh them up into a paste and then feed it with tweezers!
not seeds  it will be getting its fluids from the worm juice

sounds yucky, sorry

hope there is someone here who can help :clover:
I think you should be prepared for the owrse sadly, little birds who have had cat trauma dont often make it through the night :( but at least you are keeping it comfy

naughty kitty cat :nono:

I was going to suggest a wildlife centre, that's terrible it had to close :(

I have never had an injured bird survive myself so I am no help otherwise

Hope he is ok this morning :)

You can meal worms from some pet shops which would save you digging.

I hope that the poor wee mite survives.

Naughty cat!

I hope it survives. Sometimes they die of shock though, so don't be too upset if it doesn't make it. They have such delicate little hearts.

Keeping fingers crossed though!

Thanks for the link er, it was really useful (I read it before I went to bed last night) .

The little bird is still with us. I was very surprised to see it was still alive when I looked in on it this am  . It looks quite defiant and its eyes are really bright!

It doesn't make a sound though and just huddles in the corner of the box.

I really don't know whether to try and drip some water down it's beak or just leave it well alone - or even put it in the bushes somewhere as I don't want to make it more stressed and upset.

Dearie me, what a responsibility!

.........I'll get my phone book out and see who I can call  .

I think you should put it out in the bushes Mazza, and see if it starts behaving normally. Poor thing.

Tough decision if it looks bright eyed and healthy maybe it will be able to fly off if you put it outside. You have probably done all you can,so dont feel bad about any decisions you make ;)
Good luck

hi mazza

Why don't you give your local vet a ring, they may be able to offer advice. Naughty Cat.:D

i agree with Annabel, put it out and hope for the best. even if it dies out there it's gotta be less traumatic than dying in a box.

 .
I had a better look at the little thing earlier and it has got a damaged wing. I am not sure if it is broken, but it is very sore and red looking in parts :( .

I can't bring myself to put it out now as it will just get eaten by a cat or something  .

I had a look at its bad leg and it is really sore still but seems less angry than yesterday evening  .

I put some water and mushed scrambled egg in a syringe and dripped some to its beak which it seemed to go for a bit...

blimey, this is so difficult! .

Please ring your vet, they will help or the RSPB they helped us years ago with our, wait for it, Carrion Crow.

Thanks Ses, there's some useful stuff there. I never thought of rehydrating catfood, so that's a good tip :) .

I really better try and phone some sort of animal expert I think! (panic, panic!)

aw the poor little thing gave up this afternoon. I knew it would happen but sometimes, they seem so feisty, you just think it would make it this time :( .

Thanks everyone, I knew it would happen but sometimes I heard it pecking at the seeds I'd put in the box so I just wondered if it'd make it.

Ah well, that's the way it goes.

I await my next 'nature emergency' with anticipation.... .

its the shock that does it every time with little birdies unfortunately...
