Anne had only arrived back at her bungalow on the Braunstone estate in Leicester half an hour before the attack.
That day, in the local paper, she had spoken out about a spate of arson attacks in the area.
She said: "They must have done it as revenge for what I said. They must have been waiting for me to arrive back.
"That's how sad they are. These cowards have never once confronted me to my face. It is very easy to pick on a lady who lives on her own. I know who is responsible - they are all grown men. It is just a case of proving it."
Anne, who met Gordon Brown when she got her award, managed to rid the estate of a feared drug dealer after a 10-year fight.
