View Full Version : Spooky happenings
We have a wall clock that has a pendulum. When the battery "dies" the pendulum is the first thing to stop.
Well twice in the past couple of months the clock has stopped and then started again, but the pendulum is still swinging back and forth :errrm:
The first time the clock was running 1hr and 27mins behind, we put the clock right and tonight we have just noticed that it has stopped as some point today again - now it is 24mins slow
We can think of no explanation, Mr O has had that clock for many years and it is only the past couple of months it has started doing this. The pendulum always stops swinging first if the battery is at fault.
Also last month I kept smelling tobacco smoke on occasions, it would suddenly just whiff past me anywhere in the house :( No one here smokes, no one else smells it either :( The smoke smell is like my dads "roll-ups" he used to smoke  I haven't smelt it recently but now the clock has had a funny turn again ........................
Has anyone else ever had a strange experience ..................... http://bestsmileys.com/ghost/1.gif

Yes, a couple but one that involves a clock like yours. My father had a huge great monster of a cuckoo clock - one of those Bavarian Black wood jobs - loved the thing - I hated it! One of those clocks that runs with two weights and a pendulum runs purely by the chains of the weights being pulled up if you know what I mean
It stopped the day he died and has never gone since - doesnt matter which house or which wall I hang it up on - it wont go. It's now in a trunk in storage- I tried it in this house when I moved and no, no joy.:(
Thing is he always said if there was life after death he would give me a sign by stopping the clock........eerie eh?
 Spooky tales Omega and Planet :o
I have often heard of people smelling things they can associate with a loved one who has died
I have had several spooky experiences - many when I was a nurse which were quite scary :( and other very, very unpleasant experiences in a house my sister used to live in. I am talking about things flying off of shelves etc etc.
Apparently you can experience a haunting by either sound, smell, touch or sight or even just sensing their presence and I seem to be particularly sensitive to hearing & sensing them but I am not aware of ever seeing one.
I am a very strong believer in the afterlife and have been to see a psychic medium twice. What she told me has left me in no doubt whatsoever that our loved ones who have died are fully aware of what is happening in our lives now and I could tell you lots of things she said that she couldn't possibly have known. She is a lovely lady and the last time I saw her was in 2004. My nephew who was then only 33 had just been diagnosed with cancer and I wanted reassurance he would be ok. She told me he would be ok, but then took my hand and said to me that for me personally things were about to get worse before they got better. I was puzzled what she meant by that
Less than a week later our NFH moved in next door :o
Omega, do you know the Mermaid Inn in Rye? It has been on Most Haunted and is thought to be the most haunted inn in the country.
I am hoping to spend a night there this summer :wow: I have always wanted to stay there, it's beautiful, but I must be mad
we had a clock that did that  even with no batteries the pendulum would swing and then stop dead...not slowly come to a stop but would just stop  but there again we did live in a haunted house :D
when we moved we left the clock behind, hidden in the cellar just in case they wanted to carry on playing with it ;)

Omega, do you know the Mermaid Inn in Rye? It has been on Most Haunted and is thought to be the most haunted inn in the country.
I am hoping to spend a night there this summer :wow: I have always wanted to stay there, it's beautiful, but I must be mad
Hmmm yes I do know it, when we lived in Kent Rye was our favourite place for a day out, we always visited a special Fish & Chip restaurant :eat: We have been to the Inn many times for drinks but have never stayed there :nono:
We often stayed at a particular guest house in Winchelsea - link - http://www.thestrandhouse.co.uk/ (seems its older that the Mermaid!) called The Strand House, a 13th Century house; that is haunted. It is so old and one of the rooms door was only about 4'11"; in fact Mr O could stand next to it and lean with his elbow on TOP of the door  the floors weren't level and one of the rooms has a 4 poster bed  It also had an Honesty Bar, something you don't get nowadays!!!! (looking at prices it seems that they have gone up about 25% since we stayed there )
Anyway this particular night; I was awoken by a bright light shining in my eyes, when I opened them I could see a window with this light shining through and something moved across...........nothing unusual you'd think ........... except there wasn't a window on my side of the room :o
When I spoke about it the next day another story arose. The guest house is situated below a "top road" that winds itself down to the guest house level. One night many many years ago when there weren't cars, the horse and carriage were coming down that road and veered off down the embankment onto the garden of this house. On the anniversary of this you can hear the commotion of this accident. We were told that people who know of this often book a particular room so that can witness this ghostly happening. We weren't that brave to book that room  It has changed ownership looking at the website and has gone more "modern" with weddings etc. When we we staying there the only did breakfast :( so we had to go to the pub opposite  They don't seem to mention any of these stories on their website probably don't want to frighten people off
I believe too, I also have seen mediums, one in particular was Anne Owen who lived near me and was quite famous, she often advertised in Cosmopolitan and was used in police case abroad. She was very good and I still have the tapes of my sittings. She told me there would be a problem with an electrical item but not to worry it wasn't dangerous; next day my electric kettle broke  She told me I would be going on holiday, somewhere "down under" and that I would enjoy it etc. I had just booked a trip to NZ the day before!!!!! When I saw her after I came back from holiday, she said I was troubled and wanted to hold my right arm for some reason, then she told me I had problems with my elbow, it had been broken. :wow: I broke whilst on holiday in NZ :wow:
I also saw a lady who was very good too, she also did healing with her hands on my head, and that was a fantastic experience, she relaxed me so much. She never ever charged for the healing hands; only £10 for a sitting, she wasn't into making profits just helping people. She told me so much too.
By the way today our clock has lost an hour overnight and is now 1hr 23 mins slow :wow: but the pendulum is still swinging back and forth at the right speed ......... watch this space
That guest house looks just up my street, Omega. I think I will be staying there at some point
The Mermaid Inn has a number of haunted rooms :o I want to stay in one of their 4 poster rooms  and the Elizabethen room is one of the most haunted
In case anyone is interested, here is a link to the Mermaid Inn when Most Haunted investigated there -

and one to the Inn itself -

I am feeling brave at the moment but I have a feeling I might not be so brave if I do stay in one of the haunted rooms :lol:
I had a spooky experience once, it frightened the life out of me.
It was about six months after my Dad died and i was asleep suddenly for no reason i woke up looked at the clock it was about 6am, and i could smell my Dad, he usd to use Palmolive stuff for shaving, it was in a tube and he used to mix with something and use a brush to put it on his face, i used to go into the bathroom straight after him and you could always smell it. It was not just a little it was overpowering, it made me feel ill, my heart was really pumping, i was so scared i could not get out of bed then gradually it faded, i managed to get out of bed and wake my Mum she rushed into the room, but nothing. Oh and another thing i was the only one, out of mum and bro to every dream about my Dad, no one else did except me, it was always the same dream i would be walking down a road and i would turn the cornor and my Dad would be there and we would have such a lovely cuddle, it was so comforting:wub:. Just before my Mum died about two months it was really bad, it was every night, it got to the stage where my skin complaint was flaring up again becuase i was getting so upset. Once Mum died and i remarried, nothing zilch. Very odd, it is almost like, well hubby will look after you know, I'm off.
I was told, i don't recall it at all, my Mum told me, that i was very ill once, had a v bad kidney infection in fact an ambulance had been called, Mum turned up and she said I sat up in bed and was saying to her "oh mum you have just missed Dad, look he is going down the stairs, quick Mum you are going to miss him" she said she stroked my head and said let Dad go back to his rest she said i laid bck down and then opened my eyes and said oh hi what are you doing here, but i don't remember a thing.
I went to a medium once, never ever again, can't remmber her name it was just before my Mum died and she said "oh you are going to have a busy year, you are going to get married, buy a house possibly a new car" i stood on the station with my friend and said, "well the only way that is going to happen is if i win the lottery or mym mum dies" 1 month later my mum was dead. Won't go back to any of them scared the bejesus out of me.

We took Mr T's Nan's clothes to the undertakers and put them on the sofa in the reception area. The clothes fell onto the floor. We picked them up and again they fell to the floor.
So we took away the coat as we knew Nan wasn't that keen on it and put the other clothes back. Nothing moved! Think nan was trying to tell us that she didn't want the coat on her!
After Nan died Mr T's mum feeling guilty about not being around a lot when her mum was ill was lying in the bath saying out loud she was so sorry. When she had finished the light bulb blew in the bathroom and when she looked round there was a butterfly perched on the windowsill. It was january!
The Mermaid inn is stunning and the surrounding streets are lovely too. We were down there yesterday and in Winchelsea too!

Has anyone ever been to Pluckley(where they filmed the Darling Buds of May) the most haunted village in England - now that church is something else- I took a photo of my eldest son who was about 14 at the time next to an oak tree in the churchyard and when I developed the photo there was a face in the tree - honest. He kept the photo and showed everyone at school... Wish I had it now.
I know what you mean about being scared by things, I had a similar experience to you Isis when my mum died.:(
I also went to a medium who told me things that no-one could have known. She also said I would have an accident with a car but it wouldn't be by being in it. She mentioned time would hold the key and lots of other things that didn't seem coherent at the time I tried to put it out of my mind and years later I got injured by a car bomb blast and the thing that saved me was I got there late, if I had been on time - I wouldn't be here today. There is definitely something that logic can't explain.
Fascinating stuff! :o
It's always interesting to hear other peoples tales of the unexplained :o
Talking about photos,Planet, many years ago when I was a little girl [well not that many years ago then :lol:] my cousin took some photographs on nearby Boxhill. When they were developed one of them had a very clear 'ghostly' image in the picture. The image was clearly of an old fashioned soldier [possibly of the Roman period - can't remember too well now, but that sort of clothing/headgear] and he was standing with a horse :o
It was as clear as anything, just that you could see straight through them :o

I've heard of that before ...Roman soldiers and timelines.. thing is I developed my photos myself so I knew there couldn't be any trickery and this was long before digital.
Scarey stuff:eek:

Pluckley is very spooky. We have been there many times as we are quite near it.
When we visited in the winter last year we saw a floating light in the churchyard. It was like a strip of light surrounded by mist!
Got the shivers now!!
:o:eek: I want to go to Pluckley now  might just have to go there for a visit when the weather warms up a bit :)
I live with these sort of stories because hubby is a spiritualist medium (as some of you already know)
he often gives me messages from my gran and grandad, usually with a memory that I've never told him such as the colour of my bike when I was 8  My gran also likes to move things about in my mum's place, especially her 'special daughter' ornament;)
One of his spiritualist mates freaked me out recently when he asked if I 'sat', in other words did I do readings. I said no and he said 'you should be'. He said I'd been seeing strangers when I'm drifting off to sleep and that was the spirits trying to contact me:o. Thing is, I had been having really weird dreams at the time, but I'm to scared to practice. Hubby has told me to just say hello, but I'm not ready to talk to them yet and tehy will go away. It seems to work;)
As for spooky places, I went to Bodmin Jail last year:o there was one part of it where both me and my son had to get out. There was a really strange atmosphere of something unpleasant. I very rarely see ghosts, but sometimes if I go somewhere, I get a real feeling of dread and can't go any further into the place. A few times, when I said to people, they've told me a rather nasty tale about the place.
Oh,rb, that is an amazing tale :o
I have to say, having visited Bodmin Jail myself for the first time about 4 years ago, it is one of the most atmospheric places I have ever been to.
We went there with a completely open mind as we were on holiday and just doing the touristy stuff, but as soon as we went through those gates I felt like something was weighing down on me and had an overwhelming feeling of sadness that I have rarely felt before :(
I didn't see or hear anything, but I felt a real sense of sadness and complete despair and always felt as if I had someone watching me
It has to be one of the most sad places I have ever visited and although it was really interesting historically, the overwhelming feelings of despair and unhappiness could really be felt :(
That's exactly how i felt to. It was in the oldest part that the feelings were strongest.
The worst thing is, I also get a horrible feeling when I try to go upstairs in my local chuch. i'm ok downstairs, but freak out as I go up the stairs. Its the newest part of the building, but there has been a chuch or chapel on site since the 1500/1600s. The tower wasn't part of the original building and I don't know of anything nasty happening. I do know that some of the old gravestones had been moved in vistorian times to build the tower though;)

Wow, some interesting stories on here. I'm really into the spritual side of life, and my workplace is haunted
On my first night there I saw a soldier ghost, and he was proper old soldier - a white tunic with a white sah with black piping, and black trousers. I thought my eyes were playing up but he was stood there in the doorway that seperates the kitchen from the restaurant. Then he just vanished. Since then I've seen him several times, one time walking into the freezer! He never speaks and he walks with the proud gait of a military man. I reckon he dates back from the sixteenth century. Whenver I see him I smile at him but he never looks at me
Another time in Brixton underground station one spot of the station was just completely freezing when the rest of the station was boiling due to a rare sunny day in England :D. I felt like there was a beggar nearby, but there wasn't anybody else about. I keep meaning to go down there again and see what else I can pick up but i never find the time
When i was little I had a feeling about a field enm and my sister were playing in. The only way I could desribe this was 'evil'. I felt like something was watching and it was directing nasty thoughts of me. I dragged my sister away but the second time the same thing happened. When i went back last year, passing through, I sensed something watching me, but teh evil feeling was fortunately gone
We also have a chef ghost, who I've seen hurtling past - this was in the evening when the duty chefs have gone home. In the changing area I've felt myself being prodded on the leg (and nobody else was about either!), and glasses often fly off shelves. Me and another woman called Debra experience these things, and I think it's because we're both tuned in to spirits. Her house is haunted and so is my mum's, where things always disappear and end up somewhere else
My dead friend came back to say goodbye to me, and I sensed he was stroking my hair when I was crying. Ironically the only place I reside which isn't hauned is my own flat. I can usually tell when a place is haunted as well. I feel calm whenever I see or sense something, except when something falls over and it makes me jump! I want to try and talk to our ghosts but I dont really want my workmates to hear me - they'll think I'm nuts :D
:o Some really interesting experiences,Sergeant Pepper. Fascinating stuff :)
I am going to stay at the Mermaid Inn one night this week ;):wow: We are not in one of the most haunted rooms as they were already booked, but nevertheless we are in a room in one of the oldest parts of the building and if there is anything there I will sense it :o If anything goes bump in the night you will all be the first to hear about it :)
My husbands place of work is haunted  Even Mr sp who is the biggest sceptic of all has to admit to 'something not quite right' It is mostly the cleaning staff who have experiences as they are there early morning and in the evenings when most people have gone home - all except for my husband - so he has often had to deal with some very scared cleaners who have experienced something.
The building was used for various different things during the war, including a hospital and a mortuary to name just two :o

Many years ago when I worked in North London, someone told me that the building was haunted it used to be a "workhouse" you knew the place where the vey poor people would go in Victorian times when they had absolutely nothing, but I never saw or felt anything.
They do say that one of our lifts a work is haunted by a women who always pushes the button for the 3rd floor, they say that someone was in the lift trying to make convesation with her and the lift stopped at the 3rd floor and no one got out and no one was in the lift, the person swore blind that a women had got in it on the ground floor, but again I have never experienced it.
