I will be taking a short break in Europe soon. As I haven't been abroad for a number of years I thought I'd better read up on what is/isn't allowed on planes, since it's all changed since I last flew. I want to carry my bag into the cabin and not check it in. On the website of the airline the conditions say I am not allowed to take toothpaste or anything that is "gel" or hair mousse into the cabin in my luggage. Is this correct? Will I have to check my bag in if I have toothpaste/eye gel/hair mousse in it?

Isnt it up to each individual airline - there are so many changes from provider to provider.
Some are saying yes and some no- I would contact their customer services dept and ask.
Are you going somewhere nice? :)
Is this any help LE

Hi Planet and Omega.
Thank you for the info. I did check the airline rules I'm travelling with but I don't trust them to "move the goalposts" after the man ran on the runway at Heathrow last week with his rucksack! These people have made travelling such a nightmare!
That article is very good Omega. It looks like I will have to check my bag in, cos I'm sure there will be something they won't allow me to have in the cabin, even though I have decided to remove all the liquids/gels from my toiletries.
I'm off to Germany to visit a friend in Cologne. :) The only place I know I will definitely be visiting is the Chocolate museum :D can't wait for that :eat::D

Aww thank you Planet and Sparrow. :) I may not make it out of the chocolate museum though, so if you never hear from me again that's where I'll be :D a la Willie Wonka's chocolate factory

Hi Le
I hope you have great time.:beach:
When we went two years ago basically anything liquid had to be put in your case, also there no hand baggage allowed, handbag yes that was find, but no hand luggage. So i normally pack all toiletries into my case, obviously scissors and sharp objects have to be put in your case, so basically when I go through customs I just have my ciggs, a small lighter, passport and travel documents in my handbag and also my drugs that i need, if you need water etc you can buy that once you are through customs, but be warned the queues for customs are v bad, well they were last year and the year before was a nightmare they were even asking you to remove your shoes and putting them through the xray machine.
Anyway have a great time, are you going somewhere sunny??? :D:D
Have a lovely time LE and if you don't come back, death by chocolate sounds like a great way to go!
Only kidding, safe journey, OK? :)

We flew in February and no liquid was allowed in hand luggage. We were not allowed lighters either.
We had to take our shoes off. Personally I would everything in your luggage and have very little in your hand luggage. You can't take drinks through, but can buy them airside and take them onto the plane!
Check though with your airport, we flew from Gatwick.

I work at Heathrow, T5 for my sins. You cannot take anything sharp through security (obviously - but many try it), no liquids, gels, make up or cosmetics if over 100 mls and then these need to be put into a small plastic bag. Hand luggage must fit into the cradles dotted around the terminals. Once through security anything can be taken on board the aircraft.
