View Full Version : Painting tiles/tile paint
I have some really nasty tiles I'd like to paint over rather than chip off and re-tile.
Has anyone ever used tile paint? If so is it any good??
I just want to paint over them to make them plain white ...
Any tips?
Thanks :)

i've never used tile paint, it's too expensive for me. i painted over my kitchen tiles with ordinary undercoat and gloss and it lasted about 4 years before it started peeling off.
I haven't done it myself but seen it done on house makeover type programmes. I am sure they used something on the tiles first - a primer I think and also I remember seeing paint in B&Q just for tiles, so it may be best to use that
Not much help was it?:rolleyes:
No, that's great, I just wondered if tile paint finish was better than using ordinary gloss, I spose!
I was thinking the same thing Mazza lol , we are decorating and wondered about tile paint after seeing some in B&Q
Our tiles are white and we wanted to change them
I was worried they might look a bit tacky and could tell they were painted !!
If not i might have to learn how to tile very quickly :)

as long as you undercoat properly and use good quality paint there is no reason for it to look tacky. i painted green and white stripey tiles pink. it took a couple of coats but it was much cheaper than tile paint or all new tiles.
That's what i am worried about - I have been in houses where tiles have been painted over it it looked nasty because you could see all the brush strokes. I just wonder if tile paint means that you avoid the brush marks.
Maybe I should leave well alone!

brush marks occur as a result of being a rubbish painter   doesn't matter what paint or brushes you use, if you're rubbish then you'll get brush marks.
by the way, i'm not rubbish. in fact i'm pretty damn good
if you are rubbish then you could get around it by using a small gloss roller, the tiny dimples that are left by a roller are much less noticable than brush marks and actually give quite a nice effect ;)

Funny you should mention painting tiles Mazza, I'm just finishing off my living room and doing the finishing touches to my fireplace tiles. :)
I'm with with BM on using a little gloss roller rather than a paint brush because I'm a rubbish painter too. :p
Good tips on Homebase (http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HomebaseStaticPageSecondLevel?storeId=20001&includeName=howtoindex.htm)website 'How to' guides ;)
What about them paint pad things? Do you think they'd be ok on tiles? I've used them on walls - they were good  .
I really want to give this a go now!!
ta for the link - I'll need all the tips I can get! :D

i think paint pads would drag on tiles but you could give it a go. the most important thing to remember if you are using gloss is that the top coat will only be as good as the base coat so make sure your undercoat goes on smooth and you should be alright.
