well it got confusing

and all these funny unpronanceable names, it flashed to different "structures" but there was no actually mention of towers!!

saw the big one with the eye on the top, and there were some big mountains too, were they towers?

The two towers in question are:

- Isengard, which is where Saruman lives ( the man who was flooded out by Treebeard and the Ents), and

- Minas Tirith, the chief city of Gondor (where Boromir and Faramir come from) - but of course, is really Striders home  :D

Hope that helps? ;)

There were tales of adventures in both, hence "The Two Towers".

No you didn't vernon: you said one was where the "naughty white wizard" was, that's right, that's Saruman.

Beth,

Tolkein wrote the LOTR in three parts, the second part of the trilogy was called The Two Towers.

The "Eye" of Sauron is watching throughout the whole of the films - he wants his ring back (sorry, this sounds very funny at this time of night after three glasses of wine  . Did anyone see the French and Saunders take on LOTR for the Christmas special last year? Funny  :hihi:  ).

Sauron in Mordor just IS. Until the ring is destroyed and he's beaten.

Isengard was flooded during The Two Towers. Minas Tirith has a big part to play in The Return of the King. As does Mordor (of course), and Mount Doom in particular.

Can't wait to see Shelob - she's given me nightmares since I was seven! ;)

:o

take your word on it!

Arise Arise, riders of Theoden
fell deads awake: fire and slaughter
spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises
ride now, ride now, ride to Gondor!

Sorry to confuse you all, but the towers referred to are Orthanc (Isengard) and Cirith Ungol (The tower where Frodo is captured by Shagrat - past Shelobs lair) - not Minas Tirith as many people mistakenly think.

I imagine it must be nearly time for the release of the final part "The return of the King" I think. Does anyone know when it will be out? Really looking forward to it

Hmmm, Sam's utterance in Cirith Ungol eh?

A Elbereth Gilthoniel
o menel panal-diriel,
le nallon si di'nguruthos!
A tiro nin, Fanuilos!

O Elbereth Star-kindler
From the firmament gazing far away
To thee I cry here beneath death-horror (shadow of death?)
O look towards me, Everwhite

Similar to the hymn:

A Elbereth Gilthoniel,
silivren penna miriel
o menel aglar elenath!
Na-chaered palan-diriel
o galadhremmin ennorath,
Fanuilos, le linnathon
nef aear, si nef aearon!

O Elbereth Star-kindler
White glittering slants down sparkling like jewels
from the firmament the glory of the star-host!
To-remote distance gazed far away
from the tree-tangled middle-lands,
Fanuilos, to thee I will chant on this side of ocean,
here on this side of the Great Ocean!

Of course, Tolkien himself gave a rather more 'florid' translation of the above :)

Sam's:

O! Queen who kindled star on star, white-robed from heaven gazing far, here overwhelmed in dread of Death I cry: O guard me, Elbereth!

Hymn:

O! Elbereth who lit the stars, from glittering crystal slanting falls with light like jewels from heaven on high the glory of the starry host. To lands remote I have looked afar, and now to thee, Fanuilos, bright spirit clothed in ever-white, I here will sing beyond the Sea, beyond the wide and sundering Sea.

"Clever Knickers" :D

Can't say I've vere heard that phrase before - I suppose it's just a variation of smarty pants. Not exactly Tolkeinesque language but I think I'll use it at every oppotunity in future. :fun:

Seeing as how Shelob is a child of Ungoliant (a spirit from the void, in spider form which radiated darkness that even the Valar could not pierce), I suspect she will be extremely terrifying!

Now I am confused (I know it doesn't take much  ), why then is the second book called the Two Towers when the second Tower isn't in it?

Apologies for confusing people with my wrong answer  - at least I looked right for a while!

Originally, The Lord of The Rings was supposed to be a six book compilation, however the publisher wanted to put it out as a trilogy. They asked Tolkien to come up with the names of the 'books'. Tolkien was under some dealine pressure, and agonised over it for a while, eventually coming up with "The fellowship of the ring", "The two towers" and "The return of the king"

It was Tolkien who made sketches for each bookcover -making three versions for the second volume called "The Two Towers". The first one showed the Dark Tower of Barad-dur and Minas Tirith. The second version showed Minas Morgul and Orthanc, but had some extra detail on Orthanc depicting its Key and the staff of Saruman. The third and last version by Tolkien shows, drawn at the bottom of Minas Morgul, the Nine Rings of the Nazgul and a crescent moon for Minas Ithil (Tower of the Moon and drawn white). Under Orthanc is the White Hand - the sign of Saruman.

So a bit of a mixture leading to confusion amongst the readers.

Tolkien tried to clarify the matter in some of his letters:

"The Two Towers gets as near as possible to finding a title to cover the widely divergent Books 3 & 4; and can be left ambiguous- it might refer to Isengard and Barad-dur, or to Minas Tirith and B; or Isengard and Cirith Ungol (1)." [Letter #140]

The footnote (1) to this letter reads:
"In a subsequent letter to Ranyer Unwin (#143), Tolkien is more definite that the Two Towers are `Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol'. On the other hand, in his original design for the jacket of The Two Towers (see #151) the Towers are certainly Orthanc and Minas Morgul. Orthanc is shown as a black tower, three-horned (as seen in Pictures no. 27), and with the sign of the White Hand beside it; Minas Morgul is a white tower, with a thin waning moon above it, in reference to its original name, Minas Ithil, the Tower of the Rising Moon (FotR p. 257). Between the two towers a Nazgul flies."

We also have another letter, which reads:

"I am not at all happy about the title `the Two Towers'. It must if there is any real reference in it to Vol II refer to Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol. But since there is so much made of the basic opposition of the Dark Tower and Minas Tirith, that seems very misleading." [Letter #143]
