A toddler died yesterday after his father accidentally reversed over him outside the family home.
Neil Younger was driving a Land Rover when he knocked over Jake, 18 months, on the pavement in the town of Kibblesworth, Gateshead, at about 4pm.
Neighbours rushed out after hearing the "blood-curdling" scream.
An eye-witness said: "It was a really awful scene; Jake had gone under the wheels and they couldn't get him out."
Emergency services were called to the scene and the boy was airlifted by a police helicopter to Newcastle General Hospital, where he later died.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "It was a tragic accident."
Mr Younger and his partner, Julie Younger, were last night being comforted by relatives.
The couple, both in their twenties, have one other child, a five-year-old boy named Owen.
His grandfather Alan Younger, 55, who lives on the same street with his wife Brenda, 51, said that Jake's father ran around to his house with the boy after he was injured. "Neil ran into here saying 'help us, do something'. We put the baby on the rug and resuscitated him and gave him the kiss of life.
