Yesterday I went to see the West End performance of Cabaret at the Lyric Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue
Cabaret has been one of my favourite films for many years - I could watch it over and over so I was really looking forward to seeing the stage version and it had good reviews
Amy Nuttall [formerly of Emmerdale fame] was in the leading role as Sally Bowles and Julian Clary was Emcee
I have to be honest and say I was just a little disappointed at the stage production :(
Amy Nuttall wasn't bad, though Liza Minnellis portrayal of Sally Bowles must be a hard act to follow  Julian Clary as Emcee was appropriate casting but he can't sing for toffee
I think the main problem was due to the size of the theatre :( Unlike most West End theatres, the Lyric is really very small and I am sure that had a negative effect on the overall performance and general atmosphere.
My biggest criticism is that there was a lot of nudity in the stage production :wow:
I am no prude  but I didn't know it contained nudity........a lot  and it genuinely came as a bit of a surprise :rolleyes: I nearly choked on my refreshments when a male cast member [no pun intended ] walked on stage naked and this was followed by a lot more occasions of both sexes. It really and truly was totally unnecassary IMHO. The film didn't need sensationalism to make it a huge hit, and the stage show really didn't need it either  It was irrelevant to the storyline and nearly caused hubby to have a heart attack
So, if you are going to see it, leave your kids and granny at home  but otherwise - I would recommend Chicago above this production as super slick and a deserving 10/10
Considering it is one of my fave films, the stage performance didn't work for me, but I think I was maybe expecting too much  and I would only rate it 8/10
Then we walked along the road to Fortnum & Masons :wow: [Just to look, not to buy, I hasten to add!!!]
