View Full Version : Laptop vs tower
I am still pondering a new bit or hardware, but my trusty old banger is still chuntering away! Even so, I know the day will come when I will really have to get a new computer of some sort.
So...
I was just wondering if a laptop is a good option now or a tower system. There's almost no difference in price now, but I was wondering about performance and endurance?
I'd love to know what anyone thinks :D .

We bought a laptop this time round, and as I am not massively technical it does everything we need it to, though I am assured by the geek squad in the office that "it won't be as good for games" which doesn't worry me, as i can never hit the ball with it anyway!

I use both but to be honest laptop is more convenient - I only use it for word and scriptwriter etc., games do seem harder with a touchpad but then I'm no good at them anyway. Over the years laptop does seem to have been a lot harder to diagnose and fix than the tower.
Tower is my workhorse that does all the editing and does have more power.
Depends really on what you want it for and the cost I suppose. Not much use was I?
 I guess we mainly use the internet, a bit of word processing and playing games - on this site !
I never thought about the games part...I don't even know how a laptop would do that!

the call of duty halo3 players wouldn't, but its all about learning which buttons to press, like mice in a maze! I used to get great satisfaction that one of my colleagues would tell us all about his wargaming exploits online, but was actually scared of guns in real time!

I had to be persauded to convert to a laptop when our desktop died, and for sheer convenience you just can't beat it.
I would never go back to a desktop now - I can now sit on the sofa with my feet up, watching tv and surfing all at the same time. No more backache or disappearing into another room for me ;)

Really does depend on your usage
I would go for a laptop, if
- you don't intend to use it for heavy stuff like photo editing, gaming etc.
- you are not fussed over upgrades.
- you have wireless internet access at home it is very very convenient, if you are cabled when you connect to the internet, then it does limit the original purpose somewhat.
A desktop is basically the flip side of all the points mentioned above.
Hope it helps
