View Full Version : Washing Trainers in a machine
Just wonderin'...
Does anyone think it's a good idea to wash a pair of nike trainers in the washing machine??
I have never washed trainers before, but this particular pair are quite new and in desperate need of freshening up (a really bad smell has infiltrated them, but I don't think it's foot odour related) .
So I wondered if it's ok to put them in the machine and if so, what cycle do you reckon??
Thanks, o houseproud ones!!

I am sure Nike would say their trainers mustnt be washed in a machine under any circumstances!!
Our local sports shop has a sign up saying 'dont wash your trainers in a machine then come in here moaning for your money back because they have fallen apart' or words to that effect!
anyhow, you have to put them in a pillow case or laundry bag and on 30 deg cos you dont want to melt any of the glues.
they will takes AGES to dry you do realise - any no you cant put them in the tumble dryer!
Oooo...how can I get the nasty whiff off if they ought not go in the machine?? I can't stand Febreeze and I don't think it works anyway...
The smell is so awful - like cat pee, really really strong  .
Am loathe to chuck them out, they're only a few weeks old! :frown: .
How about odour eaters mazza if you do have to wash them in the machine then the shortest cycle and lowest heat setting might be ok only trouble with that though as annabel said they take ages to dry and theres no guarantee they wont smell again after a few weeks :(
just found this
Break up some charcoal into small pieces and place inside an old pair of clean tights, then put them into a pair of smelly trainers, it will get rid of the bad odour. It works with all shoe, boots etc and this Sprinkle a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda into each shoe, shake well to ensure the powder penetrates down to the toe and all over the inside of the shoe, and leave overnight
I always wash trainers in the machine and they come up a treat :D
They do take ages to dry though
Put them in a pillow case and wash them on a delicate or woollen wash and they should be fine. I've washed all major brands this way including Nike and never had a problem :)
How about after they are washed, putting them on the radiator, would that be ok do you think??
Sorry, I am so clueless!
 I always try to time mine for a nice hot sunny day and put them outside, but in an emergency on a not nice day I have put them under a radiator to help them dry quickly. I haven't tried putting them actually on a radiator though, so can't comment on that one :huh:

I've dried them on a radiator but inside a pillow case so they don't get any ridges from laying face down and that worked.
charcoal works but hard to get at this ti e of year unless you have some left from summer
I would suggest put them out side and give them a really really good aplication of bi carb! its also soaks up the smell, after 24 hours hoover them out ;)
edit: just done some googling and appently you need to bi carb them and if that doesnt work, put each one in a plastic bag and seal and then put them in your freezer! leave them at least 24 hours, freezing kills the germs that cause the smells!
Ooo, never thought of bicarb...I have been keeping them outside otherwise peeps will think our cats have done something nasty in the hallway!!

Funny you should mention washing trainers mazza, mine are clinking away in the washing machine as I type! Mine are brand new too though were beginning to whiff a bit perhaps cos I didn't wear any socks! That will teach me.
Greats tips about the bi carb too. Hope yours turn out ok Mazza, I'll update about mine too in a bit

If you dont want to wash them and its just that they smell a bit miffy - cat litter (fresh of course;))sprinkled in them and then left for 24hrs works quite well as its basically charcoal.
Also works in a miffy fridge if you put some in a container in the bottom it takes the smell of strong cheese etc out of the fridge.
I think I may try the bicarb route first (thanks everyone for that tip :D ) . I'm intrigued to see if it works!
Then resort to the washing machine if I get no improvement...nothing to lose I guess cos either way, they will get trashed if I can't get rid of the smell.
if bicarb doesnt work then freeze them :)

I never knew trainers were so versatile! I must get some bi carb. Great tip!
:( My freezer's chokka block...I can't wait that long until we've eaten enuff food to make space!!! They really are humming !
I may just nip out later and get a drum of bicarb instead.
Ooo this decision making is hurting my head now! :hihi:
Have a look at this mazza
Seems there will be an answer to it soon

 Magpie!! It sounds like a long way off for this pair - they'll be in the bin before long if I can't shift this awful whiff  .
I tried bicarb...no joy :( . Mind, how long should it be left anyway? They were also left out in the freezing cold last night (at least -2 here :o ) .
They've just gone through the wash (desperate, I am) and are now on the washing line - perhaps the sun can bleach the smell away?
I wonder if it's a reaction between my lad's feet and the glues in the footwear - it definitely smells of cat pee rather than the usual smelly feet niff.
I can't even believe I am saying all this stuff! :hihi: .

if bicarb doesnt work then freeze them :)
And then visit them once a year?
Ian :nfh1:
Gawd, I wish I could exile them for at least a year, they are still honking and I've tried everything now.
they washed up lovely after all that, but still ming :( .
I'll have to spray them with perfume - my very last resort...

I was just about to suggest scrunched up newspapers inside them, but er59's advice looks like a winner.
just found this
Break up some charcoal into small pieces and place inside an old pair of clean tights, then put them into a pair of smelly trainers, it will get rid of the bad odour. It works with all shoe, boots etc and this Sprinkle a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda into each shoe, shake well to ensure the powder penetrates down to the toe and all over the inside of the shoe, and leave overnight
* update 1:11 AM * I just read your most recent reply after all that, heh! If you're going to try perfume, how about buying a bottle of 'refresh' (Fabric refresher spray) made by Comfort, puts freshness back into clothes. Neutralises odours, leaving behind the 'just-washed' freshness of Comfort.
Ooo, thanks for that, I will definitely try the newspaper as I feel it's a smell coming from inside the upper, and that's hard to get the bicarb onto! Paper scrunched up will touch it though  .
I'll also watch out for the Comfort stuff, I was toying with the idea of using a 'Molton Brown' room spray on them as it's a tiny bottle that I can get into the shoe to squirt from inside!
Oh dear, can't believe I'm still trying to sort this out!
 Just to tidy this up - and in case any other hapless soul has the misfortune to have reeking trainers to deal with...
I can't believe it, but it's sorted now - and it was scrunched up newspaper that did the job, so thanks so much for that idea, you've certainly saved me a few quid  and my porch doesn't honk of cat-pee any more!! :hihi:
