View Full Version : Flooding ~ and sad news
I would just like to say that my heart goes out to all of you that may be experiencing bad weather today and the effects of it.
And to the families of those who are in peril and who have sadly lost their lives on this dreadful day :(
To the family of the young man in Hull who lost his life trying to clear a culvert trying to prevent his work place being flooded....We are thinking of you at this time.
To the family of the young man who was swept away in Sheffield...We hope that he is found safe and sound
To the people who are at risk in Sheffield who are trying to reach safety on the roof which now is in danger of collasping...We hope you are rescued quickly and safely
To all our members and their friends and families, please take care and be safe
Please do not take risks of any kind, property can be replaced, you cant.
Please remember even after the rain stops, the rivers will still be rising, if you dont have to go to work tomorrow then dont!
take care of yourselves :flowers:

Absolutley terrible what a tragedy hope everyone in those areas affected stays safe :(
Very sad indeed. I hope everyone stays safe over the next few days.
The river Aire in the centre of Leeds has now burst its banks too, The Royal Armouries closed early and have sand bagged all the doors near to the river
two narrow boats have become stuck underneath a river walk way connected to an apartment block, if the river keeps rising the walk way could break away from the building and cause even more problems :o
I do love the Yorkshire spirit though, watching the news they have been talking to people trapped in Sheffield and asking them have they got suppplies etc, Yorkshire quotes of the day include..
We have supplies, some cans of lager and a bag of sweets, we are worried though as the Lager has already gone
Just seen a car float past, a fiat punto, the owner is going to have bother finding that in the morning.
We have packet soup here, but my wife just phoned to say this weather is going to keep up until July, dont think we have enough soup to last till then!

isnt it awful? and i dont think the weather is going to let up for a bit yet. apparently the centre of the low pressure was right over the south east today so we in london had bright sunny weather for most of the day!
you would think it was october, not nearly july!
Well said Beth. My thoughts are with the families of those who have been lost or died during this terrible deluge of storms and torrential rain we are having.
It is terrible; but we always seem to cope; somehow. We have been lucky here today, no rain til about an hour ago. I spoke to my mum in Kent and they have had torrential rain all day.
Strange isn't it - we always seem to have torrential rain during Wimbledon fortnight!

Ditto all the sentiments expressed in this thread
My first ever trip to Yorkshire this weekend, and I had to spend much of today trying to get back from Leeds.
Whilst the driving conditions were somewhat ... challenging!!! to put it mildly, this is one weekend away I'm not going to forget in a hurry.

Exactly what I said last night, it did feel like October.
It's terrible anyone has to lose their lives because of the flooding. It's getting more frequent now and I think those in power need to start taking a long hard look at making better flood defences in places that are vulnerable. Some of them are simply not good enough and despite us not being a country that is generally well prepred for extreme or cold weather, it's probably about time we started.
Does make you wonder how prepared we all would be for something like that.
My heart does go out to the families of the people who died over the last few days. It really is tragic.
So, so sad that 3 people died yesterday :(
I remember reading somewhere that the more building work that takes place in this country, the more often we will get flooding as the rainwater is losing land to soak into. Apparently, even the fact that many people convert their front gardens into hardstandings for car parking all has a knock on effect.
There have been so many sad stories about the storms over the country :(
I spotted the following in our paper today, A forecasters explanation why we are having the bad weather and also some more entertaining ideas:
What IS going on?
THE mad weather is blamed on waves in the jetstream, the high-level wind that normally moves storms quickly along.
A Press Association forecaster explained: "Instead of the jet stream blowing straight from the Atlantic across the UK to Scandinavia, it has got huge waves in it.
"It's like a rope with kinks, making it move right down to the south and then back up to the north. The weather gets held in the loop, causing rain and storms."
So the experts blame kinks but here are some more entertaining explanations:
WIMBLEDON
GMTV's Andrew Castle says: "It's nothing to do with climate change, a new Ice Age or anything else. It's down to the fact it's Wimbledon fortnight and therefore, by law, has to chuck it down."
WRATH OF GOD
Could it be a message from above? After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin said: "God is mad at America." And a Kuwaiti official backed this up with: "This is a wind of torment Allah has sent to this American empire."
PAGANS
Expert Suzanne Evans says: "Because of the dry April, Pagans prayed to Mother Nature for rain. They make offerings of herbs and fruit and it certainly worked."
Sadly it looks like the floods have claimed a fourth victim :(
A motorist is feared dead after being swept away in a rain-swollen ford and a reservoir dam is on the point of bursting as floods swamp Britain.
The motorist went missing near Pershore, in Worcestershire, after telephoning his wife at 3.40pm on Monday to say his Volvo estate was being overwhelmed by floodwaters.
Police have tonight found a submerged vehicle and divers are on their way to search the car in Bow Brook,
