View Full Version : Corrie story line - the NFH - shall we complain?

Ok ok Don't all shout at me .............. but is anyone watching Coronation recently?

They seem to be trying the tackle NFH situation and quite honestly it is really making me angry. It is showing the NFH making a joke of out everything.

The NFH has just moved into the street into one of the new houses with small back gardens, anyway they have too many living in their so the teenage son has been given a wooden chalet shed at the bottom of the garden to live in :o On one episode the street turned out to watch as this big crane delivered this wooden chalet "shed" and it was lifted over the rooftops and into the small back garden.

This teenage (18yrs) kid is playing music loud & was seen urinating up against the shed by his neighbour cos "it was urgent" he said ............ and as per normal the NFH thinks it is all funny

When the father who's idea was the "shed", was confronted by the two neighbours either side he smiled, took it all on board and when he got indoors when asked what he was going to do about it he said "what we always do ignore it".

I know its only a soap but when they are putting out this type of behaviour as comedy I really feel  and wish they would portray it as a serious matter. I feel like contacting the prgrammers and giving them a piece of my mind and pointing them in the direction of this site - if I knew who to contact

Sorry I needed to say that and get it of my chest so to speak

I've been watcing it too, Omega and I agree.

I love Corrie but sometimes in soaps the storylines aren't dealt with sensitively enough.

They should give us a mention to make up for it  ;)

We should also try OFCOM who took over from the ITC. This link takes you to the online form. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/progs/specific/?itemid=286480

What annoys me is that they make it funny and then they go to the extremes where their "council" and "EH" solve the problem and the NFH gets evicted.
This sends out the message to people that it is easy to deal with a NFH

Hi Omega,
I agree with you totally the programme is taking the ******** out of NFH making it like it is a complete joke and it is not .
When the story first started i really thought that Corrie were going to tackle this story properly but no they have made this into one complete big joke and to me it is not.
Yes i think we should all make a complaint to Granada stating they either do the story right by gaining experiences from people who have had or are having trouble with NFH or take the story line off completely.

Maybe the Corrie writers should come onto this site and read some of the pure hell people have been going through with NFH that way they may LEARN:mad:

I shall be writing. Obviously none of them have had bad enough problems to see this as an issue.

Its a pity they couldnt have turned it into showing how hard it is living next door to nfh and how hard it is to get help to deal with it in the real world :(

I feel exactly the same. The are portraying the NFH as a cheeky chappie and his suffering neighbours Claire and Gail as being interfering busybodies. Making light of NFH problems is like telling every member of this forum to get a life!

I usually love Corrie, but feel as if I've been slapped in the face by them.:(

I won't be holding my breath for a reply, but I pointed out the seriousness of the problem and gave the site a little plug ;)

Showing how hard it really is for a LA and the police to deal effectively with a NFH would give many a green light to become NsFH. Propaganda showing that they will be dealt with quickly and decisively is, IMHO, a more sensible approach. Perhaps some LA staff and police officers will watch this story and begin to develop better, and more pro-active methods for dealing with real NsFH.

Although I didn't see the programme I understand it treated NFH behaviour as comedic. This definitely deserves a complaint.

BTW: My SO and I regularly rip the story-lines in Holby City and Casualty to shreds. It's become sort of a sporting challenge for us - even though it's far too easy to spot the monumental gaffs.

 like how a Consultant is always on the ward, night and day.

How Chrissie just walks back into a job helping out! How Mark Williams (Nurse) can run the AAU dept on his own!

How Connie gives birth and goes back to work 10 minutes later!

I could go on. Still have to watch it though!

Hi Everybody,
I cannot find the thread that started this post off so started a new one.
I just thought i would let everybody know that i have made a complaint to Granada Television products about the way Corrie Street is handling their story of having Nfh.

I have mentioned this site and told them they should take a visit to this site and learn all about NFH from people on here and not make a big joke out of it all.

If we all make a complaint to Granada studios they may actually do some thing about it because at the mo i am disgusted in the way there story is,,,,
Has anyone else complained? i would be interested to know.

I watched Coronation Street last night and saw how poorly the subject of NfH is being treated.

I am going to complain now after reading this thread.

Thanks for this thread and the contact info for Granada etc.

Coronation Street, ITV1: 14/05/2007: 7:30pm
Thank you for your complaint. We do appreciate that you have been concerned with how the soap is portraying a neighbour from hell storyline. However after having the chance to consider this further I can now advise that we have not upheld your complaint as we do not feel that there has been any breach of the Broadcasting Code.

The Code sets guidance in areas such as protecting the under-18s, harm and offence and impartiality. However we do not interfere in the direction of plots and broadcasters are allowed creative freedom to develop story lines as they see fit providing the overall content does not fall outside of our rules. We take into account the audience's expectations and, although some viewers may feel that scenes are distasteful, upsetting or misleading in a family drama, most viewers accept and, indeed, enjoy the representation, whether exaggerated or not, and portrayal of characters, relationships and their situations in such programmes.

We take the view that writers should be allowed to show life as they see it providing they do not exceed generally accepted standards. We find that viewers generally appreciate that behaviour and incidents portrayed in a fictional setting do not always reflect that of real life. Whilst it may well be the case that in reality disputes between neighbours can have serious consequences and have an undeniably detrimental impact on lives; we do not feel that this portrayal presents a problem from a regulatory point of view. Viewers of the soap are watching for the characters and their reactions to situations. This is not a factual programme which seeks to highlight the seriousness of neighbour disputes and what can be done about these. We are sorry for any upset that this storyline has caused you.

We appreciate the trouble that you have taken to raise this matter with us. Even though we will not be pursuing your complaint on this occasion, it is important for us to know what the audience thinks.
Yours sincerely

 @ you! I kept mine so I could scan it first ;) Mind you I feel like reply to this Louise Manning just to ******** her off really. I thought the tone was trying to say, don't worry its only fiction and not true

I have noticed that on other soaps or drama's etc they do say that "if you have been affected by "whatever" please call the helpline number of "whatever" who can give you advice.....etc" They could at least say at the end of each episode that relates the these NFH "if you have been affected by having Neighbours from Hell, there is a very good website that offers advice and support log onto NFH.org.uk....etc"

 might suggest that to her :p

Go on Omega!! You tell her. They completely missed the point though - they were turning a serious situation into a joke - instead of showing what could be done. No doubt it will win some award for soap plot of the year

Done  pointing out that on many soaps and drama's that deal with "emotionally sensitive issues" always put telephone numbers or websites relating to those issues after each episodes, so why can't they do that for this? I have kept mentioning this forum with the address - now will wait to see what happens

Emailed her using my nfh.or.uk email addy ;)

I got the same type of reply from Ofcom over the weekend. I specifically gave them the address of this website so they could see how it was in real life for us, but obviously they are not concerned with anything like that.

I got the same reply too!

You would think that she may have noticed how many people have complained about it wouldn't you??

Fair enough the content isn't breaking any broadcasting laws, but the least they could do is contact Granada and let them know of our complaints.
She wasn't very helpful at all.

Thanks for this further email.

Whilst we do appreciate that you feel very strongly about this issue i should advise that Ofcom cannot force a broadcaster to list contact details for support organisations. It is for ITV to decide whether or not to supply these on screen or via its website.

Thanks for your feedback.

Regards

Louise

Reply to my last email to her - so basically go back to ITV and complain  which is what I did in the first place :p

I am absolutely horrified to see a popular soap like Coronation Street trivialise the effects loud noise can have on neighbours.

The very popular & long running soap has a story line with an obnoxious family who have moved in and started causing trouble. They run a Kebab shop and have built an oversized shed in their tiny garden but now they have them playing their music very loudly.

A regular character (Gail Platt) has complained to them but got nowhere and the one girls answer was (after Gail had complained to the local council) that they should play their music as loud as they like. This is a very bad attitude and example that this soap is setting.

I have had to deal with a noisy neighbour on and off for the last 6 years and this message could blow everything out of the water, especially where I live as the mentality of some of the neighbours is prehistoric.

I am hoping the soap will show the consequences of what can happen to people who ignore warnings and carry on regardless or I will be sending the company who produces the soap a letter....

PS...I havn't been online for a while due to health issues but I am feeling a little better after my operation.

Sorry not trying to hijack your thread; but in light of what you have all said I'm not surprised:dry:, and am very pleased that I don't bother watching it.
:rolleyes:I'm an Eastenders sort of person myself and even when I think its a load of codfish, I switch it off and stop watching it for months. (at least they managed the NFH story line better)... don't you think? or does no one remember that?

Hope I haven't upset anyone, just speaking my mind,....sorry!

I have also emailed them...didn't realise others had been following this too.
It made me sick to the stomach the other day when the female character was saying "play your music as loud as you like" to the lad who lives in the shed.
I really hope they will show Environmental Health getting involved and what happens to people who choose to ignore the letters.

I see that Coronation Street have brought in another NFH using the same house for them to live in. Wonder what they will make of that huge shed in the garden :errrm:

Will watch this one with interest to see if it escalates into a NFH situation as last time or not, because this family not only turned up in a rotten old blue transit but the music from the stereo could be heard even before they arrived

Did anyone else see it??

Lol Corry street is not to everybody's taste nor is Eastenders but as i like them both and wooo i am now getting into Emmerdale big time i did used to watch this show every so often but the story line is good and it does all depend on the story lines where i watch either of the soaps.
But each to their own lol:)

Yep watched that last night but the last supposedly NFH family did not last it did seem that corry changed the story line and made them into a little bit of a considerate family.
This family well we will all have to wait and see if corry gets it right this time:dry:
