I have recently bagged me a bargain, a beautiful hide leather chair in perfect condition for a mere £85, but it smells of smoke. Now to me its very noticeable because I dont smoke anymore and you know what they say about ex smokers
I have cleaned it with leather lustre but I cant get rid of the smell. I always shut the lounge door at night so first thing in the morning it's very strong. Any ideas as to how I can get rid of the smell without damaging what is a lovely chair?

Hi Plant24,
I have a leather settee and as we have a dog i have to clean the leather settees regular i found that if i use a strong leather cleaner (cannot think of the name at the mo i am at work) mixed with two drops of Lavender oil this bring out all the doggy smells and cigarette smells
Do a test on a small patch first tho but it adds shine and a lovely aroma.

I have a leather sofa but this chair just matches perfectly, I've used leather lustre and leather cleaner I got from kleeneze but it's still there. Im tempted to haul it outside and let the air blow round it for a couple of days but knowing my luck it'll get nicked

I think I will get Mr. P to give it a buff as he can put more muscle into it :)
He can imagine it's nfh and it can be anger management

hi P24

No worries, glad to be of help

As kebea41 has said, good quality leather chairs (older ones) are ten a penny to come by now

So I would invest on some 'leather' pampering. Mr P will be all muscles at the end of it, and along with those NFH thoughts too - kill them buff buff ....

;)

i always use dove soap to clean my leather suite. any moisturising soap is just as good as branded leather cleaner and it leaves it smelling really fresh ;)

So any good soap will do it then? I have some rather nice cinnamon soap from lush wonder if that will work?

See the problem is its not dirty, its just the smell. At first I tried sticking some pot pourri down the sides of the seat but that didnt work as when you sat on it the potpourri came out and stuck to your a*se
I also blocked the vacuum cleaner trying to get it all out again. Bet you're all glad you dont live with me

the soap will get rid of the smell too hopefully. my living room smells like the bathroom after i've cleaned the furniture.

also, cutting an onion in half and placing it into a bowl of water near the item should draw some of the smoke smell out too (always assuming you can cut an onion in half ;). its food but it's not actually cooking). i have no idea why that works

Try buying a little organza bag then added dried Lavender in it, tie it up and put one down the sides of each section,, May work:)

I was going to suggest a simple hand soap. I found washing my nets when I used to smoke in a hand soap got rid of the smell better then any washing powders etc.

Although washing powder diluted is supposed to get rid of smells.

Dove sounds like a good idea, nice smell too.

Found this for general smoke odour:

If you've recently burned a steak -- or if your chain-smoking aunt recently paid you a surprise visit -- remove the lingering smoky odor by placing a shallow bowl about three-quarters full of white or cider vinegar in the room where the scent is strongest. Use several bowls if the smell permeates your entire home. The odor should be gone in less than a day. You can also quickly dispense of the smell of fresh cigarette smoke inside a room by moistening a cloth with vinegar and waving it around a bit.

Sorry GEG, but it says that Saddle Soap is much to harsh for Leather furniture.

I suppose it smells bad to me because I am an ex smoker and we are the worst for this kind of thing. Also I find my asthma triggers when Im near so I'm anxious to fix it fast.
It was a real bargain at 85 - the guy brought it all the way from cumbria as well and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it - no tears, marks, the cushions perfect except for the smell.
It's going to be good for me because it has nice strong arms to help me get up.
Sign of old age when chair supercedes Mr. P

Looks like Im going to be busy !!!
I think Ill start with a wash and then try some leather lustre again, the kind that keeps leather supple.
Ill put an onion in a dish next to it too. I couldnt put it outside Nancy, I thought about it but round here they would probably try and put wheels on it and race it. They pinched somebody down the roads pushchair last week, she only left it in the garden while she took the kiddy inside.
My neighbour said that our three houses are the only ones that havent been robbed and that is because he has cctv that covers the whole of the back and the dog in the cage in the garden.
What a place huh...bet you can see why I like it so much;) .
Omega, dont forget to leave the car engine running for hours everyone else here does:lol:.
