As many of you know I have a lot of stuff in storage that won't fit into this house and have been sorting through and getting rid of things I know I will never want again. I came across a beautiful tiffany lamp but some of the colour of the glass has faded. Can I paint this with glass paint and what's the best kind?
Someone told me there was a product made by Plaid that might work?
I don't really want to get rid of the lamp as it is an original not a modern remake, but it looks pretty shabby at the moment. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds lovely, P24 - I love Tiffany lamps, but I only have reproductions myself, so lucky you.

I would imagine you would need a specialist glass paint to withstand heat, not sure if ordinary glass paint would work as it may 'bubble'.

Have you tried looking at craft shops like Hobbycraft? I think they have an online shop, so you may be able to do a search. Good luck.

I was going to suggest craft shops too :)

Strange, if it's proper stained glass the colour will not fade as it's not painted on but made up of metal oxides.
Any glass paint should do the job!

(I'm trained in stained glass!)

Thanks for the replies. I gave it a wash in lukewarm water and washing up liquid- nearly dropped it twice and its brighter but it still doesnt look right to me. It's the reds that look sort of cloudy. It could do with doctoring, so I'll have a look online. Also a small piece of the lead strip is a bit rough. is it all right to use sandpaper to smooth it?

Gallery glass by Plaid is your best bet, as its a kind of coloured silicone that is water based and peels off if needed, that way its not a permanent thing on your lovely lamp :)

It comes in all shades.Hobby craft used to sell it and so did QVC but I havent bought any in a couple of years so not sure if they still stock it.

I would leave it, it's not actually lead it's soldered copper foil so there is a risk of it tearing, if you want you can email me a pic of it and I'll do my best to suggest something:)

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll try cleaning it again first because I know without a doubt I'll mess it up. I didn't realise it could be a major job painting it and of course the risk of spoiling it for ever.

I'll get some brasso and give it a go

I'll try that, though cleaning glass,or windows is not my forte ;)
