Carrying on from the Most Haunted topic, do you believe in ghosts and spirits and have you seen any?

I've got my own experiences and views but I'll reveal those later ;)

Good topic Planet24

I do believe in a life after death, so therefore, I believe that we shall live on spiritually after I kick the bucket.

But that still does not mean that I believe, for this reason, that ghost exist with absolute certainty.

The other aspect to explore is the need for scientific evidence. People have argued that the lack of evidence regarding the existance of ghosts (I remember the time where some people tried to photograph ghosts- I think they succeeded) means they cannot possibly exist. I beg to differ.

There are many things that are unexplained, that leave the scientists baffled but have been seen and so have to be accepted. But what if their not seen. Can't we still accept these things. Do you believe in Angels? In God? If you do, you believe in the unseen, a very strong form of faith.

So ghosts can exist even though not proved by science.

Oh, please tell us, Beth -that's teasing us

I absolutely 100% believe and have had experiences too. A spirit can be seen, heard, smelt or felt. I have not 'seen' one, but have experienced the others - most of them in the hospital where I used to be a nurse. I think quite a lot of nurses will have experiences to tell

I have also twice visited a psychic medium - 3 and 4 years ago. I wanted the ultimate proof that the spirit world knows what is happening in 'our world' and I got it :) There is absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that there is life after death and it has made me a calmer and happier person for knowing that my brother, Mum, Dad, and several other relatives and friends know exactly what is going on in my life :)

I've never experienced a ghost or spirit so I am one of these people who will believe it when I see it.

I wanted to understand what happens to the spirit when it leaves the body. I do think we all have one, but the thought of thousands and thousands of spirits wondering around is quite a strange thought.

What can they see, can they see everything you are doing, everywhere you go? Do they just 'see' things as in not physically but with their spirit minds that can see what is going on or predict happenings as some of you have talked about.

Unlike most haunted, I don't think they are restricted to night time visits under piles of rattling chains, but I've yet to have an experience which has proved to me otherwise.

Maybe one day it will happen, then I will truly beleive.

I am however, open minded enough to think there could be something, and there is more to life than just this existence and that there are things that go on which simply can't be explained through science.

Do tell Beth, you can't just leave us hanging on!!!

I believe there is something after death but still not sure what

I also believe that people do see things but because most people do not want to believe there is another life it is put down to mind playing games.

My late mum use to play with the cat with a screwed up piece of paper by throwing it and the cat would go chase it.
Whilst in his office at home the cat was playing with this screwed up piece of paper and knocked it out of the room. My partner said the paper was then thrown back into the room with the cat chasing it, there was no way the cat could have knocked this paper that high and no one was in the house. My partner was left spooked all day and he does not believe in ghosts at all.

My mum had died four days before this happened

So i guess it is what you want to believe really :)

I used to think it was more to do with what goes on inside our own heads.

However, I have changed my mind, I havent seen any ghosts, but I have on occasion felt a presence, so I think that there is a spiritual world out there, its just that some of us can tune into it better than others.

I have only ever had one "reading" never met the guy before, he didnt know me and the person that had arranged it didnt know the stuff about me that this guy was telling me....

I asked "did my nan visit me when she died"
"yes, but you were not at home" ......(I was at work the time she died and yes she had visited me at the exact time of passing) also need to say this was in thye middle of the night and I lived 150 miles away from her

he told me the reasons that she couldnt visit me at that time, at home more regualerly...which was true

then all of a sudden he said March, March the 16th he did not go through months or numbers to see if I had a reaction that was the only date he gave me

I said"yes that's her birthday" he said "yes I know" ;)

he also told me about a relative who had died many years ago, no one I was with on that evening knew this, who the person was or the details of the passing ...but he did !

so its not just about cold readings and reading peoples reactions

Im another believer i have been told things by mediums that they could not of guessed that were very accurate about people that have passed on
Ive always had a spirit around me which i saw briefly just once a few years ago i also find it comforting to think that a spirit lives on after death ive visited spiritualist churches and find them relaxing
I might just add that my hubby and son think its a load of old mumbo jumbo and they have ribbed me no end there will always be people who believe and those that dont i suppose your own personal experiences is what makes your mind up for you :)

I believe in ghosts as I've been involved in 3 separate hauntings but I'm not sure I believe that what we are goes to another place to carry on living.

That's really fascinating about the mediums, Beth and Er

My own experience with the medium was also amazingly impressive

For many years I had wanted to visit a medium, but was very nervous about it  I had always wanted to believe that our spirits live on, and was scared that if I visited a medium I would be disappointed and unconvinced. However, I also knew that for me, it was also the only way that I would be truly convinced.

I was careful about the medium I chose as we have all heard of 'dodgy' ones  I did a bit of research and through a reputable psychic society [sorry, can't remember the exact name now  ] I found the name and phone number of a lady who lived quite near me. She was very experienced in the field and travelled abroad to give talks etc. etc.

Anyway, I rang her to make an appointment, and before I said too much she told me to just give her my first name only, and not to tell me anything at all about myself  . So, As far as she was concerned, all she knew about me was my name was sp54 and I was female

I told absolutely no one that I was going  Mr sp didn't like the idea when we had discussed it before, my friends had mixed views, and my 3 sisters and remaining brother found it all as fascinating as I did, but I didn't tell them because if I came away feeling unconvinced, it would disappoint them too. So, feeling as if I was heading off to have an illicit tryst  I set off to her home

I would also say that, as much as I wanted to believe, I was not going to be 'led' by her saying things like 'someone with an 'a' in their name' or gauging from my response and reactions. I was determined to give nothing away and I succeeded throughout the hour long sitting even though it was hard.It was only afterwards that I told her how accurate she was, and then I cried   [out of happiness] and then she cried too, bless her  .

Well, I could be here all day telling you what she said, but it left me with no doubt whatsoever that we do live on, and also that our departed loved ones know exactly what is going on in our lives :) :She accurately gave me the names of my Dad, hubby, son and a friend. She even told me that my deceased loved ones had attended a recent family wedding [my nephews] :o To clarify that she accurately told me the colours of the outfits my sisters and myself wore at the wedding :o She pointed to the exact spot on the body where my son had a nasty mole removed, etc. etc. Loads and loads of other stuff she said, and all accurate. No one, not anyone, could make a stab in the dark guess at things like that

I visited her again a year later after a much loved Aunt had died, and again, she was spot on. My aunt was hilarious when she was alive, and her sense of humour came across just the same as if she was alive :)

So, P24, what are your experiences then? ;)

Well I have seen a ghost, spirit or whatever you want to call it and I have to say it did frighten me at the time.

I have also had my palm read more as a joke really but it was an incredibly eerie experience. I had never really believed in the true sense of the word but on a weekend away filming in Blackpool many years ago, during a break I went up to one of the piers and there large as life was this Palmistry sign - I went in and was asked if I had ever had my palm read, I said No. Ah a virgin she says .
Blimey here we go thinks I.

She proceeded to tell me all about my private life, how many children I had - I don't wear a wedding ring and in those days people never presumed you had kids without being married,so some parts right, some iffy, and then she started on my health saying I would have a car accident.... . But she told me I would have the accident at work, but it wouldn't be a normal one involving a car, and it would be across the water.
Being late would save me more injuries but there would be a couple of incidents involving the same kind of thing, but I wouldn't be injured.
slightly eerie...I have to say..... and yes it did come true, as she said in a very strange way..........

When my mother died, she died at home and I found her, while I was waiting for the police, I had the most terrible sensation of her standing behind me while I was facing her on the chair where she died.
I cant explain it, I just knew she was there but I have to admit I was too frightened to turn round.

Months later, I was sitting in the dark about 4 am (I wasnt sleeping well) when the door opened and my mother said 'In you go poppet' with a shooing motion as she often did with my son when she brought him home from a day out (he was around 3 at the time). But this happened 3 or 4 times one after the other almost like a film on a loop.
By the time I summoned up enough courage to stay 'Stop wait I need to talk to you', she was gone. I have never seen her since.
But believe me I know what I saw.

My cousin went through a period of depression a few years ago, only about 23/24 years old at the time, was unable to work and on heavy antidepressants, wouldnt leave the house, he swears that my mother went to him in the night when he was sitting awake in bed and told him that everything would be alright, she was dressed in white with a bright light round her.

he went to sleep after that and when he woke up the next morning he felt like a whole weight had gone from him, he hasnt taken his antidepressants since and went back to work pretty soon afterwards.

I think she went to him because she was always quite fond of my aunt (her youngest sister) and my aunt adored her so i think it was a cry for help and she came.

i also sometimes get the feeling she is behind me or to the side but when i turn she is not there, or i think i catch a whiff of her perfume but no one is nearby. but i tend to think thats is my mind doing that to me rather than a really spiritual occurence.

Oh wow, that's an amazing story, P24 :o

I think some of us are more 'tuned in' to seeing or sensing the paranormal than others.

Hospitals are well known for more than their fair share of stories of the paranormal, and when I was a nurse I had a few unexplained experiences. On one occasion, 2 of us had the same experience and it totally spooked us

I was doing my stint of night shifts and was working on the ENT ward with one other nurse. This ward was in a separate block to the main hospital. The outside blocks were connected to the main hospital by a network of underground tunnels which were eerie enough on their own

We were on the 3rd floor. The ground and 1st floor were occupied by the childrens ward and SCBU. The 2nd floor below us was empty as it was being decorated so it was locked at night. The floor above us was the day nursery and was also empty and locked at night. Our ward was only a small one and had its own operating theatre at one end of the ward which was next to the ward office.

On this particular night we only had 12 patients in [it was a long time ago   ]. Four were children who had just had tonsillectomies that day, and 8 were adults. Seven adults had also had ops that day. The remaining adult was a very elderly lady with one leg and she was in a coma

On the other side of the ward office was a kind of lobby area which had 2 single rooms in it. The very poorly lady was in one of these rooms and the other was empty.

This ward had a reputation for being haunted, but lots of other wards did too, and you were too busy to dwell on it. Anyway, the other nurse and I went around and checked on all our patients and did whatever was needed. Each of the post op patients were 'flat out' and the elderly lady was made comfortable. Satisfied that everyone was asleep and comfortable we then both went into the ward office to do some paperwork.

After a few minutes I thought I heard something coming from the lobbied area of the 2 single rooms. I heard heavy, laboured breathing, and shuffling footsteps. This came from no other part of the ward and I could see that everyone was still asleep. I thought I must be imagining things as there was no way a one legged unconscious lady was shuffling along the corridor and it was not any of the others  I carried on with what I was doing. Unbeknown to me, the other nurse had also heard exactly the same thing and also thought she was imagining things

A moment or two later the noise happened again - first the heavy, laboured breathing, and then the shuffling footsteps. It sounded like someone wearing slippers shuffling along a tiled floor with some difficulty! Well, there followed a real Carry on Nurse moment as the other nurse and I both threw our paper work into the air and dived out of the office, round the corner to where the noise was. There was nothing there :o . We went and checked on our patients - all were still asleep. We checked the rooms leading off the corridor - linen room, stationery cupboard, bathroom etc. Nothing.

We were both very shaken by what happened I have to admit, and we phoned security who came and checked everywhere for us. They also checked the floors above and below us but they were locked and there was no sign of any intruder.

When we told the other staff the next day, the Ward Sister told us she had been told this before, but never mentioned it to anyone as she didn't want to frighten the night staff.

I think it is highly likely that the noise occurred during the day too, but with all the normal noise and hustle and bustle of a ward you would not hear it then. We heard it because it was so quiet, and maybe we were both 'sensitive' to hearing the paranormal. I have experienced hearing strange things several times, but you do wonder if it is your imagination playing tricks on you, but when it happens to 2 of you at the same time - well, then you know you really did hear something that could not be explained

You'll never see me move that fast again, that's for sure

Just seen your post, Stoney - smells are quite common - so maybe you have had a paranormal experience

I'd just like to add something to that predicted accident with the car that wasnt a normal accident across the water.

I was in Northern Ireland we were there to do some OB work and were due to film a fete.

Being a woman of course, I was running late and we arrived at the venue of the carnival late only to be caught up in a car bomb incident, where my leg got hurt by flying glass, but if we had been on time, we would have been blown up, as the police had a tip off that there had been a bomb planted somewhere but ushered the spectators towards the car instead of away from it.
So she was spot on with a car accident in a round about way across the water that would injure me. As for the near misses, she predicted, a couple of times I have been in the location of suspected bombs, Once outside The Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue when a bomb was found in a telephone Kiosk and I had tickets for that matinee performance, and another time I was outside a block of flats in Southampton, when a bomb cache was found.
Maybe someone up there really is looking after me.

My cousin used to do readings on our local radio station, he once did mine but said I was difficult to read  Years ago I went to one with a boyfriend who, even unbeknown to me had had a bad car crash several years before and had his leg re set with metal rods, she mentioned all this. I've also had the working in a nursing home experience when someone passes away but we did a thread about this before and wrote it all out then :P .

You've just reminded me of something,Sp  When I was about 11 my Grandfather died,as my Nan (a diabetic who used to get hallucinations from time to time from her prescribed drugs) lived on her own, I was asked to go and stay with her. One night, Nan sat up in bed and turned the lamp on which woke me up.I asked her what was up and she replyed "Nothing to worry about love, I just saw your Grandad walk through the wall" I didn't get much sleep after that!!

As I've mentioned before, my hubby is a psychic medium (a fledgling, not doing many churches himself yet) He sometimes practices his readings on me. Now, I hear you all say, he's bound to know everything ;) . But, there are some little things from my childhood gtthat have never been mentioned as tthey are completely unimportant. Daft things like the colour of my first trike or who cuddled me first when I fell off. One night, he told me in detail about a fall I'd had and how it was my gran that came to me first, he couldn't figure out about my mum. When I thought back, I could remeber it well, my mum was in hospital at the time and my gran was staying at our house to help my dad out  .

The other odd thing he said was that my mum would glimpse my gran in mirror or glass at some point, but didn't know when or where. A couple of months later I was away with my mum and she came out of the bathroom quite spooked. She was talking about how much like my gran she was now, almost her double. She had to do a double take in the mirror but didn't see the resemblence as strongly the second time :o . I never told her what hubby had said, even to this day, because I know it would freak her out.

Mum is convinced she gets visits from gran often. She's found money in the old purse, in an obvious place, despite checking it a couple of times before. We always used to kid my gran on because whenever we went for lunch or anything, she would reach foor her back and announce that she had money. We always shouted back 'so have we' . Finding the cash was as if she was still saying it to us :) It was quite comforting really.

To be honest, I've seem and heard so much both through hubby (not a person to go round old castles with ;) ) and my old work, which everyone had a spooky experience in. i would probably end up taking over this thread.

Suffice to say, yes I do believe

:o Blimey, CN, you made my hair stand on end

RB, that's fascinating about your hubby. What was your old job btw then?

When I was nursing I witnessed a lot of patients who were close to death, 'seeing' their deceased loved ones :o . I remember as an 18 year old student nurse being totally freaked out when a patient would say they could see various long dead loved ones, but after a while got used to it, and other nurses would share their experiences too. Yes, it could be caused by drugs in some cases, but why would they all see their deceased loved ones no matter what drug they were on, and as I have said already, not all of them were on drugs anyway :o

The closest to home was when my MIL was close to death. She was in a hospice and was just hours from death and we were all around her bedside. She was on drugs, but had been on them for a while, so why, just a few hours before dying, would her face light up and she raised her arm and pointed to the end of the bed and said 'Mummy and Daddy'. [She was 60, but had always called her parents Mummy and Daddy  .] Her mother had died when she was only 17 :(
Anyway, all our eyes turned instinctively to where she pointed, but obviously nothing was there. I said nothing to poor mr sp or his 2 brothers as it would have distressed them further, but I knew..............she died a few hours later.

This is something I have witnessed several times with the dying  I therefore really do believe that our deceased loved ones come to 'greet us' when we pass over.

An interesting question arises from this. Do those of you that believe or have had experiences with loved ones who have passed away, believe in God and that there is a heaven etc?

I am open minded enough to think that there must be more to us than our bodies and that we would not be so original in our personalities if it were not for something special we have about us which leaves when we die because all we are then is flesh and bones. So I do think we have a spirit, and I really hope I have an experience so that I can truly believe someone out there is watching over me (or maybe they just don't like me!!!).

But I don't believe in God or heaven etc. I wondered if this was the case for any of you.

sp54
29-03-07, 09:22 AM
That's a really interesting question, stoney

My own beliefs are a bit of a mix   I have a belief, but it is not necessarily what we have all been taught, but rather a mix of spiritualism, and a belief that yes, there is 'someone' and yes, there is a heaven. I am also interested in near death experiences which gives us a glimpse of this. My Mum had a near death experience when she gave birth to me, and I have read about it a lot and I do believe they glimpse heaven. I also believe in angels and reincarnation too though, due to other experiences i have had,

I truly believe that the spirit lives on, and it has been proved to me - I see little point to just being born and dying and can't believe that is all there is to it

I recall a time when my youngest (aged 4 at the time) was sleeeping in my bed.

My parents had just passed away within a year of each other following difficult illnesses...and having been abused in hopsital/nursing home.

It was a really tough time for us....and I guess when the kids were alseep and I thought that i was th eonly one awake....I would have a good old cry......coming to terms with the whole expereince very slowly.

One night...my youngest was fast asleep...laughing away contently.........I stoppped and looked at her and thought that she was awake and asked ehr to what she was alughing at. She sat up and said, "******(the name that she uses for my grandparents) & **** wanted me to know that they are both ok."
I asked he rwhat they were doing and she said, "They are sitting at a white round table in the open air, there is a dog running around and they (my parents) were laughing away."

Then my daughter lay back on the bed. I was shocked...surprised....u name it! I shook her gently to see if she was awake and just having a 'dream.' But she was away with the fairies!

Next day, I asked her about it and she just looked at me like I was on something!!!!! So I left it at that.

My teenage daughter who was also in the bed heard it also and she is dumbstruck as I am!

I guess it was comforting to us...but i still don't know whether it was a dream or what??!! I still think about it sometimes.............

I was brought up in a mixed religion family, so for me it was a very strange childhood, I was neither one nor t'other as they say and each of my parent's parents were strictly religious. I don't think either of them could accept me as one of their own in the true sense of the word.

My parents always insisted I made my own mind up as to what faith, if any I followed.I have always been open minded and accepted anyone's faith without being bigoted.

I once had a long conversation with a vicar at a garden party, I always remember the conversation, he said strictly off the record 'We have to have some kind of control over the masses or pandemonium would break out'. Perhaps it has, and we are witnessing it now.NFH are not exactly God-fearing are they?

Personally I believe that our conscience should be our guide, but like Beth I cannot believe that this is all there is, if it is, so many people waste their lives waiting to be reborn, instead of doing all they can, while they can.

It's a sensitive subject, I have no wish to upset anyone who sincerely believes, but to me there has to be a greater good, because there is surely too much evil in the world.

RB, that's fascinating about your hubby. What was your old job btw then?[/b]

Nothing unusual really. I worked in a dept store but it was built outwith the old town walls. It would be around the place where the lepers hid out ;) . We were all convinced it was a child as we would hear our names getting called then stuff would come of the shelf beside us. About six of us also hear a child crying well after closing time and after we had checked the floor was clear

I occassionally go to the spiritualist church, and find it really comforting. I also have a very strong faith and attend my own church, so I find life after death easy to accept.

My hubby didn't believe at all, but kept having odd dreams about people he had never met, getting messages from them etc. Someone advised him to go to the Spiritualist Church and ask about it. They showed him how to stay safe while communicating and he has a really strong belief that there is another place for us now.

He loves doing his clairvoyance, and never gets paid. He sees himself as helping and you shouldn't make a profit froma gift. He sometimes think that is why things started going wrong for DA, he was making too much money from MH and his tours ;)

Hi All,
Really interesting experiences and thoughts here!
I just wanted to add my own;- (I lived in an old flat) One evening I was sitting in an armchair watching televsion, it was the day of Princess Diana's death. I had no idea that she had died until watching the 10pm news.

The chair that I was sitting on was next to a wall and I was alone, having supper. I saw the news and remember feeling shocked. and gasped. At that moment I felt a hand on my left shoulder,, I froze. The strange thing was that I did not move, I did not look around but I carried on as normal... A friend that visited the flat mentioned that he too had felt a hand on his shoulder.

Also in the same flat I woke up in the middle of the night to feel my feet were being tugged at by someone...not pleasant. I used to hear the bin lid in my kitchen bang. I must admit that I used to sleep with the light on.

I feel that there was possibly one or more spirits/ghost in the flat.

When I felt the hand on my shoulder, and there was no mistaking this... I knew that we ar surrounded by spirits...I will never forget this experience as long as I live.

I really believe that there is another world, and that near death experiences are genuine!

2 of my cousins went through failed marriages, and beign superstitious, my aunt went to consult a medium, the medium told her that a spirit that is about 2 years older than my uncle is cold, hungry and suffering is living with them. When they ask my nan, she said she had a miscarriage once approx. 2 years before my uncle, a girl!! Mind you, no one knew about it since my uncle was the eldest in the family. So a burial ritual was conducted for my "aunt" to lay her soul to rest.

Some of you may know that I am a Christian and regularly attend church. I was raised with this faith and it brings me great comfort. I have every respect for other people's faith and beliefs and never want to push mine down other people's throats.

One sevice that my church offers is the "deliverance prayer team". Basically this is a group who attend a person or place when requested to deal with unwanted spiritual activity. Sometimes it is as simple as some having watched a film like the Exorcist and who've been spooked by it and need some comfort etc. Other times there is full on supernatural activity and the team will refer the person for more specific help from an expereinced minister (the ultimate being an exorcism, but these are pretty rare). I occasionally help with this group and have prayed with people who have messed around with ouija boards and tarot cards etc and had bad experiences. Also people who sense a prescence in their home or who simply want their home blessed etc.

I DO believe in life after death and also that evil is a very real force in the world.

My beliefs come from what I have personally experienced. I'm a "I'll believe when I see it" sort of person and wouldn't expect some else to share my beliefs on my say so. I have friends from differents faiths and walks of life.

My church is over 1,000 years old and was at one point a monastory. Several years ago a parishoner took lots of photographs in and around the church, and when they were developed, there were figures of monks in them! They photos were sent of the the Church of England big wigs and they were investigated. No evidence of tampering or falsification were found and the Church said that at the time they were left with an open verdict.

Going slightly off topic, our church has also had a fair bit of what we can only assume is "satanic ritual" being carried out when the church is empty. In 2004 a lizard was found crucified upside down on the church altar, SInce then a beheaded white chicken was found in the church yard with it's blood daubbed around the doorway and threshold of the church doors (the blood markings were too high to have been cause by a fox). There have also been pentagrams drawn on the walls and other paraphenalia. During Roman times when Christianity was introduced and pretty much enforced i=on the UK, Christian churches were built on top of exisitng sacred sites for pagan and other religions. My church believes that perhaps this was the case with our church and that another faith (we don't know which one) might feel that they have the prior claim on the site.

Going back on topic, our church is within the grounds of an ancient castle and naturally there are several ghosts that are said to haunt it. Many people in my village claim to have seen the White Lady who roams the battlements, then climbs the tower and leaps to her death.

I've never seen a ghost, but have seen things that assure me that there is indeed life after death.

I am not sure if I do believe or not.

I am sure if people could return after death, they would. Like why hasn't my Grandad appeared when we so close while he was alive?

I was holding LT when he was about 3 months old in my front room. I shut my eyes and felt that someone was in the room with me. When I opened them I think I saw a fleeting glance of my Grandad dressed in his flat cap and barbers coat. But then I was very tired and emotional.

The other night I was laying in bed. I have been poorly with a chest infection this week and so has Mr T. He had gone downstairs to sleep on the sofa and I had a splitting headache. I couldn't sleep and felt awful. I started to think about my Grandad and felt soothed straight away. The next thing I knew it was morning and I had started to feel better.

I would like to believe people are out there looking out for me and my family.

I believe! I haven't seen anything but feelings I have had when I am in danger make me think that someone is looking after me.

Years ago one of my customers was a spiritulist. he descibed a man that was stood next to me. I told my Mom and straight away she said thats your Grandad. The describtion was perfect.

Ah, I hope so. I must admit I could feel myself getting calmer by the minute.

I drive home every morning past the cemetry where he is buried and always call out "Night"!
