Hi :)

My computer went in weeks ago to be sorted out because I had a counterfeit version of Windows xp on it (dont ask:rolleyes: ) so I couldnt get the secruity updates etc and it kept crashing and doing what it liked  Anyway I have got it back with the proper Windows xp home edition - all done properly

Im trying ( and have been trying for 3 weeks  ) to set up outlook express for emails for my husbands address (which is the primary email address ) because work send him a lot of diagrams etc which are easier to print off with outlook express and understand than trying to do it via the net with yahoo  Even when you click printable view and print you get ads and the yahoo banner

Anyway Il get to the point  I have followed all the instructions and put the username, password in etc then it says about the pop3 server so I put in mail.btinternet.com for (I think ) incoming and SMTP.btinternet.com for outgoing as per the instructions I found on BTs site! Anyway I can receive email via outlook but cant send it and I get a big screen that pops up saying error  Does anyone have any ideas where Im going wrong before I throw my computer outside  I only want to ring BT as a last resort cos half the time you can barely hear them or they talk to you like you know what they mean and I clearly dont

Thanks

The only thing I could suggest (not that I use a PC ;) ), is ... hang on I'd better have a quick look .... back again

Depending on what version of OE you're using ....
If you go to "Tools", then click on "Accounts" that should bring up the e-mail address folder; click on the name (e.g. Sparrow@btinternet.com or whatever ) and you should see somewhere near the bottom "advanced sending options".

If you click on that, you may see a check box that says "SMTP Server requires authentication". Click on that and hopefully with it enabled, it should work.

From memory, the default is normally that the function is turned off, so until you enable it, you will probably continue to get the error message.

Either that, or I'm talking total ballcocks

I don't bother with OE anymore, as Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/) is much better and easier to use (with an intelligent spam filter that learns, etc).

You can import all old mail, settings, everything to Thunderbird and then switch. If you can use OE, you'll have no trouble with Thunderbird. B)

Hi there Sparrow,

Mine is all sorted now :)

DJ was correct, just have a play with OE/Incredimail/Thunderbird or whichever you will use and tick the box that says log on using secure password authentication.

That should do the trick. ;)

Good luck or you can pm me.

Hi

The first thing that struck me when I read your post is that you want a Yahoo email address to download to your OE. If that's the case then I think you need to have a yahoo bit in your STMP outgoing/incoming pop bit (dead technical me!!!) not BT.

Hope you get it resolved somehow.

Thanks woeful :) Its actualy the primary email address (@btinternet.com) that they give you when you start - I have my own email address on yahoo but use the primary email address (my husbands!!) to join forums etc that wont except a yahoo or hotmail address etc.

I didnt know you could set it up with Yahoo - something else to fry my brains trying

Thanks again woeful :D
