My AVG is showing as needing updating but when I click on it to update it says the file is damaged please update using another file!
Would it just be easier for me to remove AVG and reinstall it again - cos I havent got a clue
Any help would be greatfully received!!

Just go for ClamWin at: http://www.clamwin.com - Free and updates itself, great stuff. :)

Looks like Green Eyed Girl had the answer....good to know that some members on here are knowledgeable of the constant changes that go on with computers and software needs. Since the AVG is on the topic I'm interested about a few things too if someone has a moment. Mine was already installed when I purchased it. Is it really worth keeping it? It just seems like it isn't doing much or at least that's my impression. Also the strangeness that it needs to update daily, and scan my drive daily, which on the free version you have no choice of when to have it done.

Definitely worth keeping.
I've been using AVG Free for about 3 or 4 years now and I've not had any problems - other than an occasional update that fails for whatever reason. It seems to sort itself out in a day or two.
As my PC is left running 24/7 (running UD Agent and some webcam software) I sometimes miss a reboot when AVG needs it to complete an update - this doesn't happen very often, though.
I used to use the free version of ZoneAlarm but I'm now on a network and using a shared internet connection so I've had to revert to the abysmal MS thing. Since doing that AVG has picked up a few odds and ends that I'm sure wouldn't have got past ZoneAlarm. I may pay for the network version of ZoneAlarm (or get a broadband router so all the PCs on the network can run the free version of ZoneAlarm).
A good recent move was to change my email provider to vfemail (http://www.vfemail.net) - a free email service with POP/SMTP. The spam filtering is superb (I went from over 100 spam emails a day down to zero).
I also run Spyware Guard and occasionally run AdAware to do a bit of a cleanup. The hosts file has been edited to keep my browser away from most of the websites that dump junk onto PCs.
Finally, to complete the fortification of my PC I use ThunderBird and FireFox - not Outlook/Outlook Express and Internet Explorer and I do not use any MSN or similar software.
That all seems to keep it running well and virus-free even though it stays online 24/7 and usually only gets rebooted once a month or so.

Thank you for replying to my question too. Glad your update is working again Sparrow. I guess what everyone is expressing is that the AVG does help and is necessary, even when it doesn't appear to catch anything.
Green Eyed Girl - Mine has been working (lighted), but just doesn't appear to ever alert of any problems. I've had it for a year and I would think at some time while surfing the internet it would have alerted me of something. That's why I wasn't sure if it was doing much. It's difficult to tell what is necessary and what isn't that good when it comes to software like that.
Crazy Dog - Wow, you sure have a lot of different security software. It's ashame it has gotten to the point that so much software is to protect the PC. I guess I'll keep updating the AVG and also look into these other software programs. Thank you for the information.

Im having problems again with AVG  Its everytime its a big update which requires me to turn of the computer and restart. I do all this but when I restart it says my resident shield not loaded and the little box in the tray that shows Avg is running is dark rather than coloured.
In the end I have had to remove Avg from my computer and reinstall it. This is the third time since the kids went back to school  Any ideas as to what Im doing wrong?
Thanks
